When a lift wont lower troubleshooting becomes the only thing standing between you and getting a car off the rack, panic sets in fast — especially if that vehicle is stuck up in the air at closing time. We’ve been called out to shops all over central Iowa for exactly this problem, and the good news is that a stuck-up lift almost never means the lift is broken beyond repair. In the vast majority of cases, it’s a safety lock that hasn’t released, an air line issue, or a valve that needs attention. Start With the Safety Locks

Every lift wont lower troubleshooting call we take starts the same way: check the mechanical safety locks. Two-post and four-post lifts both use latch systems that engage automatically as the lift rises, and they’re designed to hold the vehicle even if hydraulic pressure is lost. If those locks haven’t disengaged, the lift physically cannot come down no matter how hard you push the down button or pull a release handle.

On most two-post lifts, there’s a release cable or rod running from each post that needs to be pulled simultaneously while lowering — if one side releases and the other doesn’t, the lift will hang up crooked or not move at all. Check that the cable hasn’t stretched, frayed, or come loose from its bracket. On four-post and scissor lifts, look for a foot pedal or handle that needs to be held down through the entire lowering stroke. If the pedal linkage is bent or the return spring is broken, the lock never fully disengages even though it looks like it’s releasing. We see this on older Rotary and Challenger lifts more than anything else, simply because the cables and linkages wear out over years of daily use.

Check the Air Supply Line

Most lift safety locks are released using a small burst of shop air, and if that air supply is interrupted, the lock stays engaged permanently. Trace the air line back from the lift to your shop compressor and look for a kinked hose, a closed valve, a blown quick-connect fitting, or simply a compressor that isn’t building pressure. We’ve found more than one stuck lift that was caused by nothing more than someone bumping the air line loose while sweeping the bay.

If your air pressure gauge shows normal shop pressure but the lock still won’t release, the problem may be a small air cylinder or solenoid at the post itself. These components are inexpensive but they do fail, especially in unheated Iowa shops where condensation builds up inside the line over a cold winter and freezes or corrodes the internal seals. Draining your air lines regularly and running a filter/dryer ahead of the lift will prevent most of these failures before they start.

Inspect the Hydraulic Lowering Valve

If the locks are confirmed disengaged and the lift still won’t come down, the next stop in our lift wont lower troubleshooting process is the hydraulic lowering valve. This valve controls the release of fluid from the cylinder back to the reservoir, and if it’s gummed up with debris or has a worn seat, fluid can’t flow out even with the locks open. Tap the valve gently while someone else operates the down control — sometimes a stuck valve just needs to be jarred loose.

Old or contaminated hydraulic fluid is the most common root cause here. Fluid that’s been in the system for years accumulates rust particles and moisture, and that debris settles right into the small passages inside the lowering valve. If your lift hasn’t had a fluid change in longer than you can remember, that’s usually the fix — drain, flush, and refill with the fluid type specified by the manufacturer. Never substitute automotive hydraulic fluid types without checking compatibility first.

Rule Out Electrical and Control Box Issues

Sometimes the mechanical side of the lift is fine, but the control box isn’t sending a signal to the lowering solenoid at all. Check for a tripped circuit breaker, a blown fuse, or a loose wire at the control box terminals. If the motor runs but nothing happens when you press down, the issue is almost always downstream of the motor — in the valve body or the solenoid itself, not the electrical supply.

We also see this issue linked to the same components involved when a lift wont go up troubleshooting call comes in — the wiring harness and control box are shared between the up and down circuits on most lifts, so a corroded connector or a failing relay can affect both directions. Look for Binding or Misalignment in the Posts

On two-post lifts especially, physical binding between the carriage and the post rails can prevent lowering even when hydraulics and locks are working correctly. This happens when a lift has been overloaded, hit off-center, or simply hasn’t been lubricated in years. Rollers and slide blocks wear unevenly over time, and once a carriage starts riding crooked in the post, it can jam tight under load.

Inspect the rollers, slide pads, and equalizer cable for wear or damage, and make sure both posts are still square to each other. A lift that’s slightly out of level will bind far more easily than one that’s properly anchored and adjusted. This is one of the reasons we stress correct installation and annual alignment checks — a lift that’s been installed and maintained correctly almost never develops this kind of binding in the first place.

Know When It’s a Cable or Cylinder Problem

If the lift moves partway down and then stops, or comes down unevenly on one side, look closely at the equalizer cables and hydraulic cylinder. A frayed cable can jump its sheave and jam the mechanism, while a cylinder with a bad seal may not release fluid evenly, causing one side to hang up. These symptoms often overlap with what shows up during a car lift wont lower troubleshooting inspection on older two-post units that have logged tens of thousands of cycles.

Cables and cylinders are wear items, not lifetime parts, and Iowa shops running lifts daily should expect to replace them every several years depending on use. Waiting until a cable snaps or a cylinder fails completely is far more dangerous — and expensive — than replacing them proactively once you notice fraying, leaking, or uneven travel.

When to Call a Professional Instead of DIY

We’re all for shops and home garage owners handling basic maintenance themselves, but if a vehicle is stuck in the air and you’re not confident diagnosing hydraulic or mechanical systems, it’s time to call in help rather than force anything. Forcing a stuck lock, hammering on a valve, or manually releasing a cable under tension without understanding the load path has caused serious injuries in shops we’ve later been called to inspect.
