Start With Power Before You Blame the Lift

Check that the breaker feeding the lift hasn’t tripped and that the disconnect switch, if your shop has one, is actually in the on position. A shared circuit with a compressor or welder can trip under load and leave everyone assuming the lift itself failed.

Next, listen. If you hit the up button and hear the motor hum or attempt to start but stall, that’s a very different problem than dead silence. A humming motor points to a capacitor, a wiring issue, or single-phasing on three-phase equipment. Total silence points to a blown fuse inside the control box, a bad up-button contact, or a loose connection at the motor itself. Pull the cover and visually inspect connections before touching anything electrical with the power still live. Loose lugs from vibration are common on lifts that get moved or that see heavy daily cycling, and they’re an easy five-minute fix once you find them.

Check the Hydraulic Fluid Level First

Low hydraulic fluid is the single most common reason a lift wont lift, and it’s the cheapest fix on this entire list. Pull the reservoir cap and check the level against the sight glass or dipstick. If it’s low, top it off with the fluid type specified for your unit, run the pump briefly, and check again once air has had a chance to work through the lines.

If the fluid level looks fine but the pump runs and you still get no lift, the pump may be drawing air instead of fluid, which happens when a suction line has a cracked fitting or a loose hose clamp. You’ll often hear a whining or cavitating sound from the power unit in this case. It’s also worth confirming the fluid isn’t contaminated with water or debris, since dirty fluid can gum up a control valve and prevent pressure from building even though the pump sounds healthy.

Inspect the Safety Locks and Interlocks

Modern two-post and four-post lifts are built with safety systems that intentionally prevent movement under certain conditions, and a stuck or misaligned lock is a frequent cause of a lift that appears completely dead. If the locking pawls haven’t fully released or a locking bar sensor is out of position, many lifts won’t allow the hydraulic system to engage at all. Check that the release cable or air line to the lock mechanism is intact and that the lock arms move freely when you manually actuate them with the power off.

Four-post lifts with a rollback safety often use a switch that must be triggered before the lift will raise from the down position. If that switch is dirty, corroded, or knocked out of alignment, the control system reads it as an unsafe condition and blocks the up command entirely. This is one of the more overlooked steps in lift wont lift troubleshooting because it doesn’t involve hydraulics or electrical failure at all — it’s a mechanical safety doing its job a little too well.

Test the Up-Button and Control Box Wiring

A worn control button is a small part that causes a disproportionate amount of frustration. If you have a multimeter, you can test continuity across the switch while it’s pressed. Rule Out a Bad Solenoid or Control Valve

The solenoid valve directs hydraulic fluid to raise the lift, and when it fails to open, the pump can run all day without the lift moving an inch. You’ll typically hear the motor running normally, see fluid moving through the reservoir, but get zero lift response. A quick way to check is to feel for the solenoid clicking when you press the up button; if there’s no click, the coil or the wiring to it has likely failed.

Control valves can also stick from debris or corrosion, particularly on older lifts that haven’t had a fluid change in years. If your lift sat unused over a Midwest winter in an unheated shop, condensation inside the reservoir can introduce enough moisture to cause internal corrosion on valve components. Cleaning or replacing the valve typically resolves this, and it’s worth doing preventively if your lift is more than eight to ten years old and has never had this component serviced.

Don’t Overlook Air Supply on Air-Assisted Units

If your equipment uses air to release locks or assist hydraulic function, a lift wont lift troubleshooting session has to include the air side of the system. Check your shop’s compressor output and confirm the air line running to the lift isn’t kinked, disconnected, or leaking at a fitting.
