Why a Pre Install Checklist Matters More Than the Lift Itself

Most people spend weeks researching which lift to buy and almost no time thinking about whether their building is ready for it. That’s backwards. A pre install checklist forces you to answer the boring questions first: is the floor thick enough, is there enough overhead clearance, is there a 220V circuit anywhere near the bay. None of that is glamorous, but it’s what actually determines whether your install happens on schedule.

We’ve shown up to jobs where the customer had a beautiful two post lift sitting in the driveway and no idea their slab was four inches of cracked, decades-old concrete that wouldn’t hold an anchor bolt under load. That’s not a small fix on install day — that’s a new pour, a delay of weeks, and a lift sitting in a box the whole time. A pre install checklist catches that on paper, before money and scheduling are on the line. It’s the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy for a project this size.

Concrete: Thickness, Age, and Condition

Concrete is the single biggest failure point we see. Most two and four post lifts need a minimum of four inches of properly cured concrete, and many manufacturers want it doweled or reinforced depending on the model and capacity. Your pre install checklist should include the slab’s age, thickness if known, and a visual check for cracking, spalling, or old anchor holes from a previous lift.

Newer slabs also need to cure fully — pouring fresh concrete and expecting to anchor a lift into it within a week is a common mistake that leads to failed anchors and a callback. Electrical and Power Requirements

Every hydraulic lift needs power, and most commercial units want a dedicated 220V circuit rather than sharing a line with your compressor or welder. This is one of the most commonly overlooked items on any pre install checklist because people assume “there’s an outlet nearby” is good enough. It rarely is.

Before we schedule your install, we ask what’s already run to the bay, how far the power panel is, and whether you’ll need an electrician involved. If you’re doing a home garage install with a smaller lift, sometimes existing wiring is fine — but for anything commercial-capacity, plan on a dedicated circuit sized to the power unit’s specs. Handling this ahead of time, rather than discovering it on install morning, keeps our crew working instead of standing in your bay waiting on a call to a local electrician.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance

We can’t count how many times a lift gets ordered before anyone measures the ceiling. Overhead clearance has to account for the lift’s fully raised height plus the height of the tallest vehicle you plan to service on it — not just the vehicle’s parked height, but roughly what it’ll clear once raised to a comfortable working position.

Garage door tracks, HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, and support beams all eat into your usable clearance too, and they’re easy to forget when you’re just eyeballing the room. This is exactly the kind of thing a proper pre install checklist puts on paper instead of leaving to memory. If your building doesn’t have the height for a two post, a low-rise or scissor lift might be the better fit anyway — better to know that before the lift ships than after it’s sitting on your dock.

Bay Layout and Clear Access

Lifts are heavy and awkward, and getting the columns, arms, and hydraulic unit from the truck into their final position takes real planning. Your pre install checklist needs to cover door widths, aisle clearance, and whether there’s anything permanently in the way — a support post, a parts washer, a fixed workbench — that would block column placement or arm swing once the lift is in.

We also look at spacing between bays if you’re installing more than one lift, since column spread and arm reach both need enough room to operate without interference. Clearing the bay completely before we arrive, including moving vehicles and equipment out of the immediate work area, is one of the simplest items on the list and one of the most commonly skipped. It costs you nothing but a little effort ahead of time and saves real hours on install day.

Confirming the Right Lift for Your Actual Vehicles

A pre install checklist isn’t only about the building — it’s also about matching the lift to what you actually work on. Capacity ratings matter, but so does wheelbase, lift point spacing, and whether you’re regularly lifting trucks, SUVs, or lower sports cars that need different arm configurations. We ask about your typical vehicle mix before recommending equipment, because the wrong arm style or capacity tier causes more frustration down the road than almost anything else.

If you already have specific vehicles in mind — a fleet of one-ton trucks, for example, or a mix of daily drivers and the occasional lifted diesel — tell us up front.
