Sizing Lift Capacity for a Mixed Fleet

The single biggest mistake we see in a new municipal fleet shop setup is buying lifts sized for the fleet’s average vehicle instead of its heaviest one. A city shop might run a dozen sedans and SUVs for police and code enforcement, but also a handful of one-ton pickups, a street sweeper, and a couple of single-axle dump trucks with plow frames and salt spreaders attached. If the lift can’t handle the loaded weight of the heaviest unit that will ever cross that bay, it doesn’t belong in the building.

We generally recommend planning around 30,000 lb capacity for at least one or two bays in any municipal fleet shop setup that includes medium-duty trucks, and stepping up further if the fleet runs anything in the dump truck or fire apparatus class. For the passenger vehicle and light-truck bays, a standard 10,000-14,000 lb two-post or four-post setup covers patrol cars, pickups, and vans comfortably. Mixing capacities intentionally, rather than buying one size for the whole building, is what actually saves money over the life of the equipment.

Bay Layout and Vehicle Flow

Public works and police fleet bays get more daily traffic than most commercial shops, and the layout needs to reflect that. We design municipal fleet shop setup floor plans around how vehicles actually move through the day — patrol cars needing quick oil changes and tire rotations shouldn’t be waiting behind a dump truck getting hydraulic work. Where possible, we separate quick-turn bays from heavy-repair bays so a two-minute inspection isn’t stuck behind a three-hour brake job on a plow truck.

Two-post lifts give techs full underbody access, which matters for brake work, exhaust, and suspension jobs that make up a huge share of fleet maintenance tickets. But two-post lifts need clear wheel access and careful arm positioning, which can slow things down on vehicles with plow mounts, ladder racks, or spreader frames bolted to the frame rails. Four-post lifts, by contrast, are faster to drive on and off and double as storage or alignment bays, which many public works shops use during winter when plow trucks rotate in and out constantly.

Most municipal fleet shop setup plans we build end up using both. Two-post bays cover the daily brake, tire, and suspension work on sedans and light trucks, while four-post bays handle the heavier vehicles, alignment checks, and overnight storage during snow season. Parts and Consumables That Fleets Burn Through Fast

A municipal fleet running around the clock through Iowa winters burns through consumables faster than a typical repair shop. Brake pads, rotors, and hydraulic fluid for plow and spreader systems move constantly from October through April, and a shop that has to wait on shipping loses uptime it can’t get back on a snow day. Beyond consumables, lift-specific parts — cables, arms, hydraulic cylinders, and safety locks — need to be on hand or close by, because a lift going down in a fleet shop takes a whole bay offline during the exact weeks it’s needed most. Any serious municipal fleet shop setup should include a relationship with a parts supplier who understands fleet timelines, not just a catalog to browse through when something breaks.

Compliance, Inspections, and Documented Maintenance

Public entities answer to more oversight than private shops, and lift equipment is part of that picture. Annual inspections, documented maintenance logs, and manufacturer-certified service on lift equipment aren’t optional extras in a municipal fleet shop setup — they’re part of keeping the shop defensible if a piece of equipment ever fails or gets questioned during an audit. This matters more with municipal fleets because the vehicles being lifted often carry public safety weight — literally, in the case of fire and rescue apparatus, and figuratively for police units that need to be back on the road fast. Budget Cycles and Phased Equipment Purchases

Public budgets rarely allow a shop to replace every lift in the building in one fiscal year, so we design most municipal fleet shop setup projects in phases.
