When a lift stalls halfway up or groans like it’s fighting for its life, the culprit is almost always sitting inside that little metal box bolted to the column — and rotary lift power unit diagnosis is exactly how we figure out which part inside it has quit. Start With What the Lift Is Telling You

Every good rotary lift power unit diagnosis starts before you ever pull a cover off. Stand next to the unit and listen and watch what happens when a technician hits the up button. Does the motor hum but nothing moves? Does it run strong but the lift creeps up slower than it used to? Does it click and do nothing at all? Each of those symptoms points you down a completely different path, and jumping straight to “replace the pump” without listening first wastes time and money on parts you didn’t need.

We tell every shop owner the same thing: write down exactly what happens, in order, from the moment the button is pressed. A motor that hums without turning usually means a seized pump or a bad start capacitor, not a dead motor. A motor that spins freely but produces no lift is almost always the pump itself, worn out internally. And a unit that does absolutely nothing — no hum, no click — is more often a control box, relay, or wiring problem than a power unit problem at all. This first-impressions step alone eliminates half the wrong guesses we see on service calls, and it’s the foundation everything else in your rotary lift power unit diagnosis is built on.

Checking the Motor Before You Blame the Pump

The motor is the easiest component to test in isolation, so it’s where we start hands-on work. With the power disconnected and locked out, we check for free rotation on the shaft, look for a burnt smell around the windings, and use a multimeter to verify the motor is getting proper voltage when the button is pressed. A motor pulling voltage but not spinning, and turning freely by hand, points to a bad capacitor or internal winding failure. A motor that won’t turn by hand at all suggests it’s seized or the pump coupling has locked it up.

Don’t skip the electrical side either. Loose connections at the motor terminals, corroded wire nuts inside the junction box, and undersized extension circuits run to the lift all mimic motor failure symptoms without the motor actually being bad. The Pump: Where Most Slow-Lift Complaints End Up

A gradually slowing lift, one that used to raise a car in seconds and now takes what feels like forever, is the classic sign of internal pump wear. Rotary and Dover-style pumps use precision gears or a gerotor set, and over years of cycling they wear enough clearance that fluid slips back past the gears instead of pushing the piston up. That slippage gets worse under load, which is why a slow lift often seems fine empty and painfully slow with a truck on it.

Pump diagnosis also means checking suction. If the pump is drawing air through a cracked suction line, a loose fitting, or fluid that’s too low, you’ll hear cavitation — a whining, gravelly sound that’s different from a healthy pump’s steady hum. Low or dirty fluid alone causes a shocking number of the “failed pump” calls we run, so check the reservoir level and condition before condemning the pump itself. Solenoids, Valves, and the Lowering Circuit

If the lift raises fine but won’t lower, or lowers on its own when it shouldn’t, look at the solenoid valve and the lock release mechanism before touching the pump. The lowering solenoid controls the release of hydraulic pressure back to the reservoir, and a stuck or gummed-up valve is a common failure point, especially in units that sit unused for stretches at a time in colder Iowa shops over winter. Dirt and old fluid varnish are the usual suspects.

We also check the relief valve setting during every rotary lift power unit diagnosis, because a relief valve set too low will bleed off pressure and mimic a weak pump, while one stuck closed can cause the motor to labor and overheat. Testing these components individually, rather than assuming the whole unit needs replacing, is what separates a targeted repair from an expensive guess. Most valve and solenoid issues are a fraction of the cost of a full power unit swap, so it’s worth the extra fifteen minutes to isolate them properly.

Electrical Controls and the Up/Down Switch

A surprising number of power unit complaints trace back to the control switch or the wiring between it and the unit, not the hydraulics at all. Pressed buttons that feel mushy, switches with visible corrosion, or a lift that only works when you jiggle the control box are electrical symptoms wearing a hydraulic disguise. We test switch continuity directly and bypass the switch temporarily to confirm whether the unit runs correctly when triggered straight from the wiring.

Iowa shops that run their lifts through humid summers and dusty winters see more of this than most, since moisture and grit both find their way into control boxes over time. If your rotary lift power unit diagnosis keeps circling back to “sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t,” intermittent electrical faults are far more likely than an intermittently failing pump or motor. Check every connection point, from the wall disconnect to the unit terminal block, before you replace a single hydraulic component.

When Fluid Condition Is the Real Diagnosis

We can’t overstate how often the fix for a “failing” power unit is simply changing the hydraulic fluid. Old fluid breaks down, picks up moisture, and accumulates metal fines from normal pump wear. That contaminated fluid then accelerates wear on the pump, gums up valves, and can even cause erratic solenoid behavior. If your power unit is more than a few years past its last fluid change and you’re seeing multiple vague symptoms at once, drain and replace the fluid before replacing any parts.

For a unit under five or six years old with a single failed part, targeted repair almost always makes more sense.
