The power unit is the small blue or black box bolted to a column that raises the lift, and when it dies the whole machine dies with it. A worn motor, a pump that lost prime, or a reservoir full of contaminated fluid all lead to the same job: lift power unit replacement. This guide covers how the unit is put together, the failure modes that force replacement instead of repair, the electrical decisions you have to make, and how the parts differ across Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Forward lifts. If your lift will not raise, cycles slowly, or trips a breaker, read this before you order.

What is inside a lift power unit

A car-lift power unit is three components in one housing: an electric motor (single or three phase), a hydraulic gear pump, and a fluid reservoir with a filter, breather, filler, and a solenoid-controlled lowering valve. When the operator pushes the up button the motor spins the pump, the pump pulls fluid from the reservoir and pushes it through hoses to the cylinders, and the cylinders raise the carriages. On the way down, the solenoid opens the lowering valve and gravity returns the fluid to the tank. It is a small, honest system, which is why a proper lift power unit replacement restores a lift to like-new operation with one part.

Failure modes: is it really the power unit

Before you order, confirm the power unit is the problem. If the motor does not spin at all, either the motor is dead, the contactor is bad, or you have lost power to the unit — check voltage at the motor terminals before condemning it. If the motor spins but the lift will not rise, the pump has lost prime or worn out, or the reservoir is low on fluid. If the lift creeps down under load, the check valve or lowering valve is leaking internally, and the whole valve stack is usually replaced together with the pump. Milky or dark fluid means water or debris contamination, which is a strong reason for full lift power unit replacement rather than a valve rebuild.

Single-phase vs three-phase decisions

Every replacement starts with a wiring question. Most car lifts ship with 208-230V single-phase motors that draw around 20-30 amps under load and need a dedicated 30-amp circuit. Three-phase 208-230V or 380-460V motors are common in production shops where three-phase service is already run to the bay; they run cooler, last longer, and often lift a hair faster. When you replace a power unit, you can usually match the existing phase and voltage exactly, or you can upgrade from single to three phase if service is available and the wiring cost is worth it. Do not mix and match — a three-phase motor on single-phase power will not run, and a single-phase motor on a three-phase panel with the wrong leg landed will burn out.

Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Forward power units

Rotary two-post lifts historically used SPX and now use SPX/Bucher power units in a distinctive footprint with a specific bolt pattern. Challenger uses similar SPX-family units with Challenger part numbers and different lowering-valve solenoids. BendPak two-post and four-post lifts run Flowfit or SPX units depending on model, and Forward two-posts use their own SPX-family unit with Forward-specific fittings. The pumps, valves, and reservoirs across all four brands share common design DNA — SPX and Bucher build most of them — but the mounting brackets, hose fittings, and electrical connectors are brand-specific. Do not assume a generic 220V unit will bolt on; confirm the mounting pattern and hose-fitting sizes before you order.

Fluid, filter, and the reservoir

A new power unit ships dry. You need clean AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic fluid (the manual will specify), typically two to three gallons per lift. Never use motor oil, ATF, or a fluid the manufacturer does not approve; the seals and solenoids are picked for hydraulic oil viscosity. When you install the new unit, discard the old fluid, flush the cylinder lines if the failure involved contamination, and change the filter. Install effort and rebuild vs replace

A lift power unit replacement on a two-post lift is a two-hour job for a mechanic who has done one before. Disconnect and lock out power, drain the reservoir, disconnect the hydraulic hoses, unbolt the mounting bracket, lift the old unit off, hang the new unit, torque the mounting bolts, reconnect hoses with fresh crush washers, fill with new fluid, and purge air by cycling to full rise with the reservoir cap loose. You can rebuild — pump cartridges, motor brushes, seals, and solenoids are all available separately — but the labor to disassemble a fifteen-year-old unit rarely beats a complete drop-in lift power unit replacement, and the new unit ships with a fresh warranty. The exception is a nearly-new unit with one failed component; a single solenoid or leaking cap is a legitimate individual repair.

Ordering the correct part and when to call

To order the right unit we need the lift brand, model, serial number, and current voltage and phase. Older Rotary and Challenger units used motors with different frame sizes than modern lift power unit replacement options, so match the mounting-bolt pattern by measurement or photo, not by model number alone.
