Start With the Serial Tag, Not the Photo

Every parts conversation should start at the serial tag. On most Rotary two-post lifts it’s a metal plate riveted to the powerside column, usually at eye level or just below the power unit shelf. On four-post models it lives on the drive-on column or inside the power unit cover. That tag carries the model designation and the serial number, and those two pieces of information settle arguments that a photograph never will. Rotary revised components across production runs without changing the outward appearance of the lift, so two SPOA10s built eight years apart can take different carriage sheaves, different lock ladders, and different hose routing.

When customers call us with a photo instead of a serial number, we can usually narrow it down, but “usually” means somebody eventually eats a return shipping charge. We’d rather spend four minutes on the phone confirming the number. If the tag is painted over, sanded off, or lost to a column that got backed into by a dually, there’s still a path forward: casting numbers on the cylinder, the shape of the carriage, the arm style, and the overhead plate on an SPOA-series lift all narrow the field. Decoding Rotary Model Numbers

Rotary’s naming convention actually tells you most of what you need. The SPO prefix indicates a symmetric two-post floorplate lift; SPOA means asymmetric, which is the swing-arm configuration most general repair shops run so doors can open between the columns. The numbers that follow are capacity in thousands of pounds — an SPO12 is a 12,000 lb lift, an SPOA7 is 7,000 lb. Suffixes matter too. A trailing letter or number can indicate column height, arm configuration, or a specific production revision, and those distinctions drive which arm restraint gear or carriage slide block actually bolts on.

Four-post lifts follow similar logic with different families — SM, AR, and the newer Shockwave-equipped models each have their own parts trees. The Parts That Actually Fail

After two decades of service calls, the failure list is short and predictable. Equalizer cables and their sheaves top it — cables stretch, fray at the sheave contact point, and eventually snap, usually on a lift that’s been run past its inspection interval for years. Lock latch assemblies and the springs that return them come next; a lift that won’t release from a lock or won’t engage cleanly is almost always a spring, a bushing, or a bent latch arm rather than anything catastrophic. Then there’s the power unit: motors, pump gears, and the reservoir seals that weep fluid down the column until somebody notices the puddle.

Cylinders are the expensive category. A leaking Rotary cylinder rod seal can sometimes be repacked, but on a lift that’s seen twenty years of Iowa humidity and road salt tracked in on winter vehicles, pitting on the rod means a reseal won’t hold. OEM vs. Aftermarket: Where We Draw the Line

We sell both, and we’ll tell you plainly which is which. On safety-critical load path components — cables, cylinders, lock latches, carriage hardware — we push OEM or a manufacturer we’ve personally tested. Cable is the clearest example. A cheap cable can meet a nominal breaking strength on paper and still fail early because the core lubrication and the swage quality aren’t there. When a cable goes, the lift drops to its locks, which is why the locks exist, but nobody enjoys that phone call.

On the other end, hardware, hoses, pads, and cosmetic pieces are fair game for good aftermarket sourcing, and the savings can be real on an older lift you’re keeping alive for a few more years. Power units are the middle ground: a quality replacement unit with the correct pressure and flow characteristics works fine, but the wrong pressure setting will either underperform or beat up the seals. What You Can Do Yourself and What You Shouldn’t

Plenty of Rotary maintenance is squarely DIY territory. Greasing arm pins, replacing pads and adapters, topping off and changing hydraulic fluid, cleaning and lubricating lock ladders, swapping a hose, adjusting arm restraints — all of that is well within reach of a competent tech with the manual open. We encourage it, because the shops that do routine upkeep are the ones whose lifts pass inspection and last thirty years.

Cable replacement and cylinder work are different. Cable routing on a two-post lift involves tensioning both sides evenly and verifying lock synchronization afterward, and a lift with mismatched cable tension will hang up in the locks or lift crooked. Cylinder replacement means bleeding air properly, checking for internal bypass, and confirming the lift holds under load. Here’s the sequence we use internally. Write down the model designation and full serial number from the tag. Note the capacity, the column height, and whether the lift is symmetric or asymmetric. Photograph the failed component from two angles, plus a wide shot showing how it mounts. Measure anything measurable — cable length, cylinder stroke, pin diameter. Then send all of it at once. That single message eliminates the three-day back-and-forth that otherwise happens over email.

For lifts old enough that the original part number is superseded, Rotary and their distributors maintain crossover data, and we have access to it. Occasionally a component is genuinely obsolete, and that’s when we get creative — fabricating a bracket, sourcing an equivalent cylinder, or in a few cases advising a shop that replacement makes more economic sense than keeping a 1970s lift on life support. We had a small independent shop in central Iowa running a lift older than the building; we kept it going for years, then helped them spec a new one when the columns finally showed corrosion we couldn’t sign off on.
