Diagnose before you order
Half the parts calls we get start with a symptom, not a part. Uneven arm travel could be a stretched cable, a seized sheave, a lock hanging up on one column, air-supply pressure to the release cylinders, or a plunger scored in one cylinder. Slow lift could be low fluid, a tired motor, a stuck relief valve, or an internal cylinder bypass. A five-minute look before you place an order beats ten days of chasing the wrong symptom. The shop owner’s spare-parts shelf
Every shop that runs multiple Rotary lifts should keep a small kit of rotary lift repair parts on the shelf. Our recommended baseline: one set of equalizer cables per column revision, a lock release air cylinder, two arm-restraint pin/gear kits, one cylinder seal kit sized to your most common cylinder, a few feet of hydraulic hose plus JIC fittings, extra screw pads and truck adapters, and a can of fresh AW-32 or AW-46 fluid. That’s maybe a few hundred dollars sitting on a shelf and it eliminates 80% of the emergency freight bills. For fleets running six or more lifts, add a complete power unit and a spare lock ladder.
When a cable problem is really a cable
Cables get blamed for a lot they didn’t do. Real cable failure looks like broken wires, visible corrosion, kinks, or measurably uneven arm heights that don’t correct after re-tensioning. If both arms travel the same and the columns just aren’t level, it’s a lock issue, not a cable. If one arm drops during lockup and the cable isn’t visibly damaged, check the sheave for a seized bearing — a stuck sheave chews cables in months. And a cable that only feels off during release usually points back to the air cylinders on the pawls, not the cable itself. Replace cables in pairs on symmetric lifts, always.
Lock problems are almost never the lock
The lock ladder is a chunk of hardened steel with big teeth. It almost never fails. What actually fails is everything around it: the release pawl spring, the small air cylinder that pulls the pawl, the air line to that cylinder, the release cable that ties both columns together, or the compressor supply pressure feeding the whole system. When you have a lift that won’t release evenly, start with air pressure at the FRL, then the release cable, then the pawl assembly. The lock ladder itself is almost always the last thing you need. Cylinder diagnosis: seal kit or full replacement
Rotary 2-post cylinders (N346, N342, N380 and current-generation replacements) are typically salvageable with a seal kit. Bleed the lift, watch the plunger under load, and check for external weep, internal bypass, or visible scoring. External weep and clean plunger surface = seal kit. Scored plunger, pitted bore, or bent rod = full cylinder. Cross-contamination from a burned power unit sometimes damages both cylinders on the lift; check both. Full cylinders, seal kits, and hoses are all stocked, and we can ship them together so a rebuild goes in one trip.
Power unit failures: motor, solenoid, or the whole unit
Power units fail in three common modes. Motor draws hard and pulls low pressure — worn motor, replace the unit. Motor runs fine but the lift won’t stay up — internal check-valve or lowering solenoid. Motor runs fine but the lift lowers slowly — restriction, dirty fluid, or the lowering solenoid stuck open. On any power unit past 10-12 years old, if the motor is showing symptoms, put the whole unit in. A new power unit is a couple of hours to swap, comes with fresh solenoids, and gives you a clean baseline for another decade.

Every other wear item on the lift we’re comfortable in quality aftermarket, and we test what we stock in our own service calls.
