Signs You Need a Cylinder Rebuild, Not Just Fluid
Before you tear into a cylinder, rule out the easy stuff. Low hydraulic fluid, a bad check valve in the power unit, or a loose equalization cable can all mimic a bad cylinder and waste an afternoon. Run the lift up, hold it at full height for ten minutes with no vehicle on it, and watch each column. If one side creeps down noticeably faster than the other, that’s your leaking cylinder.
Pull the cylinder and look for scoring on the piston rod, a swollen or hardened wiper seal, or oil weeping from the gland nut at the top of the tube. Any rotary lift cylinder rebuild guide worth following will tell you the same thing: external leaks at the rod usually mean the seal package is shot, while internal bypass (lift sinks but no visible leak) usually points to a worn piston seal or a scored bore. Scoring is the deciding factor — a seal kit fixes worn seals, but a gouged or pitted bore needs honing or a full cylinder replacement. Don’t guess here; a five-minute inspection with a flashlight saves you from reassembling a cylinder that’s going to leak again in a month.
What’s Actually Inside a Cylinder Rebuild Kit
A typical rebuild kit includes the piston seal, rod wiper, O-rings for the gland and base, a backup ring, and sometimes a new bearing band depending on the model. Kits are model-specific — an SPO10 kit is not interchangeable with an SPOA9 or SPO12 kit, even though the cylinders look similar sitting side by side. Some kits also include a new gland nut O-ring and a fresh set of static seals if your cylinder has been in service more than eight or ten years. Teardown: Getting the Cylinder Out Safely
Before anything else, lower the lift fully, relieve hydraulic pressure, and block the carriage mechanically — never trust hydraulic pressure alone to hold a column while you’re working under it. Disconnect the hydraulic line at the base of the cylinder and cap it immediately; Rotary cylinders hold more residual fluid than people expect, and it will run.
Most Rotary two post cylinders unbolt from a base flange and slide out through the top of the column once the carriage is disconnected. Take a photo of the routing for the hydraulic hose and equalizer cable before you disturb anything — reassembly goes faster when you’re not guessing. Once the cylinder is on a bench, clamp it in a vise by the base flange (never the polished rod) and remove the gland nut with a spanner wrench. This is where a lot of DIY rebuilds go sideways — forcing the gland nut with pliers scars the rod and creates a new leak path even after a perfect seal kit install.
Rebuild vs. Replace: The Real Math
A seal kit costs a fraction of a new cylinder, so the labor to pull, rebuild, and reinstall is usually worth it if the bore is clean. But if you’re looking at a cylinder with visible pitting, a bent rod, or corrosion from sitting outside, a rebuild kit won’t hold. We’ve seen shops sink two rebuild kits into a pitted cylinder before finally replacing it — the pitting just chews through the new piston seal again within weeks.
Our rule of thumb: if the lift is under fifteen years old and the bore is smooth, rebuild it. If it’s older, has been rebuilt once already, or the bore shows any roughness under a fingernail test, budget for a full replacement cylinder instead. Reassembly and Seal Orientation
Seal orientation is the single most common mistake in a rotary lift cylinder rebuild. The piston seal lip generally faces the pressure side, and installing it backward will cause the cylinder to bypass internally within the first few cycles — it’ll lift fine empty and sink under load. Lubricate every seal generously with clean hydraulic fluid before assembly, never dry, and never with grease.
Use a seal installation tool or a smooth, rounded plastic tool to seat seals into their grooves — a screwdriver or pick will nick the seal edge and you won’t see the leak until it’s back in the column. Torque the gland nut to spec, not just snug, since an under-torqued gland is a common source of weeping after reassembly. Cycle the cylinder by hand on the bench a few times before it goes back in the column, checking for smooth travel with no binding or grinding.
Bleeding Air and First Test Cycles
Once the cylinder is reinstalled, air trapped in the line will make the lift feel spongy or cause it to rise unevenly for the first several cycles. Run the lift up and down slowly, empty, at least five to ten times to work air out through the return line before you trust it with a vehicle. Watch both columns for even rise — if one side lags, there’s still air in that circuit or the equalizer cable needs adjustment.
Check the gland nut and hose fitting for weeping after the first few cycles and again after the first real load test. A rebuild that looks dry on an empty cycle can still show a slow weep once it’s holding two tons.
