Why a Shop Lift Site Survey Checklist Matters Before You Buy

A lot of shop owners assume any bay can hold any lift, and that’s simply not true. Two-post lifts need concrete of a specific thickness and cure time, four-post lifts need floor flatness, and mobile columns need enough clear floor space to maneuver around a vehicle. Skipping the survey means you find out about a problem after the lift is on your dock, which is the most expensive time to discover it.

We use a shop lift site survey checklist on every quote we write, whether it’s a single two-post for a small independent shop or a multi-bay build-out for a dealership. The checklist forces us to ask about slab age, ceiling height, door clearance, and power before we ever recommend a specific model. Concrete Slab: Thickness, Age, and Condition

The slab is the single most common reason a lift install gets delayed. Two-post lifts anchor directly into concrete, so the slab needs to meet a minimum thickness and PSI rating, and it generally needs to be fully cured — not poured last month. We check for cracks, expansion joints near the anchor pattern, and any evidence of previous patch work, because anchors driven into a bad section of slab will pull loose under load.

If your existing floor won’t support the lift you want, that doesn’t mean you’re out of options. Sometimes a smaller footprint two-post or a four-post lift that spreads weight differently is the better fit, and sometimes a small section of slab needs to be cut out and repoured before installation. Either way, this is exactly the kind of thing a shop lift site survey checklist is built to catch early, because pouring new concrete takes weeks of cure time you don’t want to discover you need after the lift already arrived on a truck.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance

Ceiling height gets overlooked constantly, especially in older buildings with duct work, sprinkler lines, or lighting hung lower than people remember. A two-post lift needs enough overhead room to raise a vehicle to full height without the vehicle or the lift arms contacting anything above it, and that number changes depending on the lift’s overall height and the vehicle you’re lifting most often.

We measure from the finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction in the exact footprint where the lift will sit, not just the general ceiling height of the bay. HVAC ductwork, gas lines, and overhead doors in the half-open position all count. This is one of the easier items on a shop lift site survey checklist to check yourself with a tape measure and a stepladder, but it’s also one of the most common reasons we’ve had to recommend a different lift model than what a shop owner originally wanted.

Power Supply and Electrical Requirements

Hydraulic lifts need a dedicated electrical circuit, and the voltage and amperage requirements vary by lift model and motor size. A lot of older shop buildings were wired for lighting and small tools, not for running a lift’s hydraulic power unit alongside welders, compressors, and everything else already pulling from the panel.

We’d rather flag an electrical gap during the survey than have an installer show up and be unable to power on the unit. Floor Space, Door Clearance, and Traffic Flow

Beyond the slab itself, we look at how the lift fits into the actual workflow of the shop. Can a vehicle pull straight in and align with the lift’s arms without a three-point turn? Is there enough clearance on both sides for a technician to work and for a second vehicle to pass? Overhead doors matter too — a lift positioned too close to a bay door can block the door from opening fully once the columns and arms are in place.

Lift Type Fit: Matching the Survey Results to the Right Equipment

Once the slab, ceiling, power, and layout are all documented, the survey results point toward which lift types actually fit your bay. A shop with tight ceiling height and a smaller footprint might do better with a mobile column setup that doesn’t require the same overhead clearance as a fixed two-post. A shop with a compromised slab section might be steered toward a scissor lift or a different anchor pattern.
