Start With Vehicle Mix, Not Lift Count

Every small fleet shop setup we’ve quoted in Iowa starts the same way: we ask what’s actually parked in the lot on a Tuesday. A city fleet running half-ton pickups and a street sweeper needs a completely different lift lineup than a delivery company running Transit vans and box trucks. If your heaviest vehicle is a 3/4-ton pickup with a plow package, a 10,000 lb two post handles it fine. If you’ve got a bucket truck or a single-axle dump in the mix, you’re looking at 12,000 to 18,000 lb capacity minimum, and that changes your concrete, your bay height, and your electrical requirements.

Plan your drive-through clearance first: know your tallest vehicle’s height with any roof equipment, ladder racks, or light bars, and make sure your ceiling and door clearance accounts for it with room to spare.

For shops running four or fewer bays, we generally recommend at least one two post lift for general service and a four post or drive-on lift for alignment checks, brake work, or vehicles you need to leave sitting for a day without tying up your primary lift. Municipal and utility fleets often benefit from mobile column lifts too, since they let you lift a truck without a fixed lift footprint at all, which matters when your bay also doubles as parts storage or welding space on other days.

Two Post vs Four Post for Fleet Work

Two post lifts win on floor space and speed of access to wheels and brakes, which matters if your fleet does a lot of tire and brake work. Four post lifts win on stability for heavier, longer wheelbase vehicles and let you drive on without positioning arms, which saves time when your techs are cycling multiple vehicles a day. Our rule of thumb: if your fleet is mostly pickups, vans, and SUVs under 12,000 lbs and your techs need frequent underbody access, go two post. If you’re running box trucks, larger service bodies, or anything approaching 18,000 lbs with an irregular frame, a four post gives you a safer, more stable platform. Don’t Skip the Air and Electrical Planning

We can’t count how many small fleet shop setup projects got delayed because nobody planned compressed air or electrical capacity before the lift showed up. A two post lift needs a dedicated circuit, and if you’re running impact tools, tire changers, and an air compressor simultaneously across multiple bays, undersized air lines will bottleneck your whole operation. Plan your compressor size and drop locations at the same time you plan lift placement, not after.

Concrete matters just as much: fleet shops with heavier trucks need thicker slab and proper anchor engineering, which we verify on-site before any lift goes in.
