Why a Two Post Lift Won’t Hold Load in the First Place

Every two post lift holds a vehicle two ways: mechanically, through the locking pawls or latches that catch on the column, and hydraulically, through the cylinder and the check valve that keeps fluid from bleeding back. When a two post lift won’t hold load, one of those two systems has failed, and figuring out which one is failing tells you almost everything about the repair. If the carriage drops in small jumps, almost like it’s clicking down a notch at a time, that’s a mechanical latch problem. If it sinks slowly and smoothly, that’s almost always hydraulic.

We ask every customer the same first question: does it drop fast or slow, and does it drop in steps or in one smooth motion? Shops that can answer that accurately save themselves a diagnostic visit, because it points us straight at the pawls versus the cylinder before we even show up. A two post lift won’t hold load randomly either — there’s a mechanical reason every single time, even if it’s intermittent.

Worn or Sticking Locking Pawls and Latches

The most common reason a two post lift won’t hold load is worn locking pawls that no longer catch cleanly on the column notches. These pawls take a beating every single cycle, especially in high-volume shops running ten or more lifts a day, and over years the engagement surface rounds off. A rounded pawl can look like it’s caught while actually just resting on the edge of a notch, which is exactly the setup for a sudden, no-warning drop.

Sticking latches cause the same symptom but for a different reason — dirt, rust, or dried grease keeps the pawl from swinging fully into place even though the mechanism itself is fine. We see this constantly on lifts installed near unheated bay doors where road salt and moisture get tracked in all winter. Cleaning and lubricating the pivot points fixes it in some cases, but if the pawl edge is visibly worn or chipped, it needs to be replaced, not just cleaned. This is a cheap part relative to the risk it represents, and it’s one of the first things we check on any load complaint.

Hydraulic Cylinder Seal Leaks and Bypass

If your lift sinks slowly and smoothly rather than in steps, look at the cylinder. Worn seals inside the hydraulic cylinder let fluid bypass internally, which means the lift can raise fine but can’t actually hold pressure once you stop pumping. This is a slower failure than a bad pawl, which is part of why it goes unnoticed for months — the drop might only be an inch or two over a full shift, easy to write off as normal settling.

Seal failure accelerates with age, contaminated fluid, and temperature swings, all of which are part of everyday life in an Iowa shop. Bad Check Valves and Control Valve Failures

Between the cylinder and the pump sits a check valve whose only job is to stop fluid from flowing backward when you release the pump handle or button. When that valve wears out or gets a piece of debris stuck in the seat, fluid leaks back through it and the lift descends even though the cylinder seals are perfectly fine. This is one of the trickier diagnoses because it mimics a cylinder problem from the outside.

We test for this by isolating the cylinder from the power unit and checking whether the drop still happens — if it does, the valve or fittings are the issue, not the cylinder. Control valve failures also show up as a lift that won’t hold load only under heavy weight, since a marginal valve can seal against light loads but leak under pressure from a loaded truck or SUV. Replacing a check valve is inexpensive compared to the alternative of a cylinder teardown, so we always rule it out first.

Contaminated or Low Hydraulic Fluid

Sometimes the fix is embarrassingly simple: the fluid reservoir is low, or the fluid itself is contaminated with water or metal shavings that keep seals and valves from sealing properly. A two post lift won’t hold load reliably on fluid that’s aerated or dirty, because trapped air compresses under weight and lets the carriage settle even when every mechanical part is functioning correctly.

We recommend checking fluid level and condition as a first step before assuming a part has failed, since it takes ten minutes and rules out a whole category of problems. If the fluid looks milky, has visible particles, or hasn’t been changed in years, drain and replace it with the fluid type specified by your lift’s manufacturer. Skipping this step and jumping straight to parts replacement wastes money on repairs that a fluid change would have solved.

When Uneven Loading Mimics a Holding Problem

Not every case where a two post lift won’t hold load is actually a mechanical failure — sometimes it’s a loading problem being misread as a lift problem. If the vehicle’s weight is unevenly distributed, or the arms are set at mismatched positions on the two columns, the lift can appear to sag or settle on one side even though both columns are functioning correctly.

We walk technicians through proper arm positioning and center-of-gravity checks whenever we get a call about uneven settling, and roughly one in ten calls turns out to be this rather than a genuine part failure. Before you tear into a diagnosis, double check that arms are symmetrically placed and the vehicle is centered between the columns. It’s a five-minute check that can save an unnecessary service call.
