Start With Safety, Then Start Diagnosing

Before any lift wont hold load troubleshooting begins, get people clear of the bay and don’t work under a vehicle that’s drifting. If the platform is still moving on its own, lower it fully using the release mechanism per the manual, and leave it down until you’ve identified the cause. A slow settle over several minutes is different from a fast drop — fast drops usually point to a blown seal or a burst hose, while slow settles point toward the locks or a check valve.

Once it’s safely down, cycle the lift empty a few times and watch it closely. Does it hold at height with no vehicle on it? If it holds fine empty but drifts under load, that tells you the seals or valve are marginal and only failing under pressure — useful information that narrows the search fast. If it drifts even empty, the problem is almost certainly on the hydraulic side rather than a mechanical safety lock, since locks are rated well beyond the lift’s own weight. Locking Pawls and Latches Not Fully Engaging

On a two-post lift, the mechanical locks are the last line of defense, and they’re often the first thing worth checking. If a locking pawl is bent, worn, or has debris jammed in the rack, it can look like it’s caught but not actually be seated, which lets the carriage settle a notch or two before it grabs. Spray the rack and pawl assembly clean, check the return spring, and make sure the release cable isn’t holding the pawl slightly open. A cable with too little slack will keep the lock from dropping into place even when you think you’ve released it and reset it.

Cylinder Seals Losing Their Grip Over Time

Every hydraulic cylinder has internal seals that keep fluid from bypassing past the piston. As those seals age, harden, or pick up scoring from contaminated fluid, fluid slips past internally even with every valve closed tight, and the platform settles even though nothing outside is visibly leaking. This is one of the sneakier causes because there’s no puddle to point you toward the problem — the fluid is just moving from one side of the piston to the other inside a sealed cylinder.

A slow, steady drift with no external fluid and no obvious hose issue is the classic seal-wear signature, and it tends to get worse gradually over months rather than appearing overnight. Seal kits are available for most Rotary and Challenger cylinders, and replacing them is generally far more affordable than a full cylinder swap. Check Valves and Flow Controls Stuck Open

Between the cylinder and the power unit sits a check valve (and often a flow control or velocity fuse) whose entire job is to trap fluid in the cylinder once the lift reaches height. If that valve gets a piece of debris caught in the seat, or the spring inside weakens, it won’t seal fully closed, and fluid slowly bleeds backward through the power unit even with the motor off. The valve itself is usually a small cartridge threaded into the manifold or cylinder base, and on many models it can be cleaned or replaced without pulling the whole hydraulic system apart. Contamination is the usual culprit — old fluid, rust flakes, or debris from a worn power unit reservoir circulating through the system and lodging in the valve seat. Flushing the system and replacing the fluid with a clean, correct-grade hydraulic oil during valve service prevents the same debris from ruining the new valve within weeks.

Hose, Fitting, and Line Damage

External leaks are the most obvious cause and the easiest to confirm — look for fluid on the floor, wet spots along the hose length, or seepage at a fitting. Hoses flex every time the lift cycles, and over years that flexing fatigues the rubber near the crimped fittings, which is where most external leaks start. A pinhole leak under pressure can spray fine enough that it’s mistaken for a damp shop floor rather than an active leak, so run a clean rag along the full hose length rather than just eyeballing it.

Fittings can also loosen slightly from vibration over time, and a fitting that’s just barely loose might not drip when the lift is at rest but weep under the full pressure of a loaded vehicle. Tighten to spec, but if a fitting has been leaking, replace the sealing washer or O-ring rather than just cranking it down harder, since overtightening a damaged fitting often makes the seal worse. If you’ve replaced hoses recently and the problem persists, the routing or the crimp itself may be at fault — worth a second look before assuming a new failure elsewhere.

Power Unit and Reservoir-Level Issues

Low hydraulic fluid is the most overlooked item on this whole list. If the reservoir is low, the pump can pull air into the system, and trapped air compresses under load in a way that fluid doesn’t — so the lift appears to settle because the air pocket is compressing rather than fluid actually escaping. Top off with the correct fluid, cycle the lift several times to work air out of the lines, and re-check before assuming a seal or valve is at fault.

Worn pump components inside the power unit can also allow fluid to bypass internally, similar to a cylinder seal issue but happening at the pump instead.
