Most shops don’t lack safety knowledge, they lack a repeatable habit. Technicians get busy, a car needs to move, and the quick visual scan that should happen every single time gets skipped once, then twice, then becomes optional. A written two post safety checklist posted near the lift solves that problem because it removes memory from the equation. Nobody has to recall what they checked last Tuesday when the same card walks them through it every time.
We tell every shop owner the same thing: the checklist isn’t there because your techs are careless, it’s there because humans are predictable under time pressure. A laminated card with eight or ten line items takes thirty seconds to run through and catches the kind of small issue that, left alone for a few more lift cycles, becomes a locking pawl that doesn’t engage or a hydraulic line that lets go under load. Posting the checklist also protects the shop from a liability standpoint, since it shows a documented safety process if OSHA or an insurance adjuster ever asks.
Before Every Lift: The Daily Walk-Around
Before a vehicle ever goes up, walk the lift. Check that both arms and pads are clear of the vehicle’s frame rails and rated pickup points, not resting against plastic trim or a rocker panel seam. Confirm the safety locks or latches move freely and aren’t gummed up with old grease or shop dust. Look at the base plates and anchor bolts for any visible movement, cracking in the concrete around them, or rust streaking that suggests water has been getting under the plate.
Listen during the raise. A healthy two post lift runs smooth and quiet aside from the motor and hydraulic pump noise. Grinding, chattering, or a hesitation partway up the travel means something needs attention before that vehicle comes down. Check that the equalizer cables on each column are under equal tension, since one loose cable often means the other side is carrying more load than it should. Arm Restraints, Locks, and Pad Adjustment
Arm restraints exist to stop the swing arms from drifting once a vehicle is loaded, and a surprising number of shops disable or ignore them because they’re seen as a nuisance. Don’t. Confirm the restraint mechanism is engaged before you start raising a vehicle, and if a tech complains it’s slowing them down, that’s a training conversation, not a reason to bypass it.
Pad height matters just as much as pad placement. Mismatched pad height side to side puts the vehicle on an angle and can shift weight onto one arm more than the design intends. Rotate and inspect rubber pads regularly since worn or cracked pads slip more easily on a modern unibody’s smooth pinch weld. The locking mechanism itself, whether it’s a mechanical pawl or a hydraulic lock, should audibly and visibly engage at each stop position as the lift travels upward. If you ever have to force a lift down past a lock point, stop and call for service instead of working around it.
Cables, Chains, and Hydraulic Lines
Cables and chains are wear items, not permanent fixtures, and they need to be part of any two post safety checklist that actually gets followed rather than just posted. Look for fraying strands, kinks, or rust pitting along the length of each cable. A cable that’s stretched unevenly compared to its partner is telling you the columns aren’t lifting in sync, which puts uneven strain on the entire structure.
Hydraulic lines should be checked for weeping fluid at every fitting, and the fluid reservoir level should be part of a monthly routine even if nothing looks wrong day to day. A slow leak that goes unnoticed for months eventually shows up as a lift that won’t hold height reliably, and by then a technician may already be under the vehicle assuming it’s stable. We’d rather replace a cable on our schedule than have a shop find out it needed replacing while a truck was in the air.
Anchoring and the Concrete Underneath It
Every two post lift is only as trustworthy as the floor it’s bolted to. Anchor bolts loosen over time from vibration, temperature swings, and repeated load cycles, and Iowa’s freeze-thaw seasons are particularly hard on slab concrete. Torque anchor bolts to spec on a set schedule, not just at install, and inspect the concrete around each base plate for hairline cracks radiating outward, which is often the first visible sign of a slab that’s starting to fail under a column.
If your shop moved into an older building or the lift was installed by a previous tenant, we strongly recommend having someone verify the slab thickness and anchor spec match the lift’s actual load rating. We’ve seen commercial lifts installed on residential-grade concrete more than once, and it’s not something a visual inspection alone will catch. This is a spot where a professional inspection is worth the cost, because a concrete failure under load isn’t a slow warning sign, it’s sudden.
Weight Ratings and Load Distribution
A two post safety checklist has to include a real conversation about weight rating, not just a sticker glance. Know your lift’s rated capacity and know it in relation to the heaviest vehicle that regularly comes through your bay doors, including aftermarket bumpers, tool boxes, or a bed full of equipment that adds unlisted weight. Center of gravity matters too — a pickup loaded with tools in the bed sits differently than an empty one, and arm position needs to account for that.
Never assume a vehicle is centered just because it looks centered from one angle. Walk around and check from the front, the side, and from underneath before raising fully. If a vehicle needs to be repositioned once it’s a foot off the ground, lower it back down first rather than trying to nudge a raised vehicle into place. This single habit prevents more near-misses than almost anything else on this list.
