On most two post lifts, the arms pivot around the column and need to swing out from under the vehicle for easy entry and exit, then swing back in and hold their position once you’ve set your pads. The arm restraint is the mechanism, usually a spring-loaded latch or a pin-and-detent system, that keeps the arm from swinging back out once it’s positioned under the car. Without it working correctly, the arm can shift sideways during a lift cycle, especially if the vehicle isn’t perfectly centered or if there’s any bump or vibration transferred through the frame.
Every two post lift arm restraint inspection starts with understanding which style your lift uses. Rotary lifts commonly use a spring-loaded pin that drops into a series of notches along the arm. Other manufacturers use a ratcheting pawl or a cam-lock design. They all accomplish the same goal, but they wear differently, and a technician who doesn’t know the difference can miss a failure point. Signs an Arm Restraint Needs Attention
The most obvious red flag is an arm that swings freely with no resistance when it should be locked in a notch. If you can push an arm side to side after it’s positioned under a vehicle and it moves without you releasing the latch first, that restraint has failed or was never engaged. We also look for bent or mushroomed pins, which happens over years of impact every time the latch drops into place. A pin that’s lost its clean edge won’t seat fully and can pop back out under load.
Rust and paint buildup are sneaky culprits too. In Iowa shops, especially ones near a wash bay or with a dirt floor, corrosion builds up in the notches and around the spring housing. That buildup can make a latch look engaged when it’s actually resting on debris instead of seated in the notch. Spring Tension and Return Speed
The spring that pulls the latch pin back into position after you release it has to have enough tension to seat fully and quickly.
