A proper two post lift cable inspection is the single cheapest piece of preventive maintenance you can do in a shop, and it’s the one we see skipped the most. What we’ve learned is that cables almost never fail without warning. They fray, they birdcage, they rust at the sheave, they go slack on one column. The warning signs are there for weeks or months. The problem is nobody’s looking, because the cables live in the overhead beam or under a floor plate where they’re easy to forget about.

Why Cables Are the Component Most Likely to Surprise You

On a two-post lift, the equalizer cables don’t hold the vehicle up — hydraulics do that. What the cables do is keep the two carriages level with each other. When a cable stretches, slips, or snaps, the carriages go out of sync, and a vehicle that was sitting flat starts leaning. On a lift with a properly functioning secondary latch system, that lean gets caught by the locks. On a lift where the locks haven’t been exercised in three years and are gummed with grease and brake dust, it doesn’t get caught, and now you’ve got a car trying to slide off the arms at chest height.

That’s the whole argument for regular inspection. Cables are cheap relative to everything else on the lift, they’re replaceable in a couple of hours by a tech who’s done it before, and the failure mode is genuinely dangerous. We’ve been called out to shops in central Iowa where a lift sat for a decade with zero cable attention, and the cable was still technically holding — but with a dozen broken strands and a corroded thimble that would have let go on the next heavy pickup. Nobody wants to be the shop that finds out the hard way, and no insurance adjuster wants to hear that the lift hadn’t been looked at since it was installed.

What a Real Two Post Lift Cable Inspection Actually Involves

Start with the lift empty and raised about four feet, locks engaged, so you can get eyes and hands on the full cable run. You want a bright flashlight and a shop rag — not gloves, at least not for the feel test. Run the rag down the length of each cable. If it snags, you’ve found a broken strand, and one broken strand means you look a lot harder for more. Six broken wires in one lay of the strand, or three in one strand, is the classic replacement threshold pulled from wire rope standards, and we apply it conservatively on lift cables because the load cycles are constant.

Next, check the ends. The swaged fitting or thimble at each anchor point takes the most abuse, and that’s where we find corrosion most often — especially in Iowa, where road salt gets tracked in from November through April and drips right onto the lower cable runs. Look for rust bleeding out of the swage, kinks within a few inches of the fitting, and any sign the cable has been pulled sideways over a sheave edge. Then look at the sheaves themselves: they should spin freely, the grooves shouldn’t be worn into a V shape, and there shouldn’t be a pile of steel dust underneath them. Slack, Tension, and the Uneven-Carriage Tell

The fastest field diagnostic on any two-post is to raise the lift empty and watch the carriages. If one side arrives at the top a half-inch behind the other, or if the locks on one column engage before the other, you have a cable tension problem. Sometimes it’s simple stretch — new cables bed in over the first few months and need one adjustment. Sometimes it’s a cable that’s slipped in its swage. Sometimes the sheave on one side has seized and the cable is dragging instead of rolling.

We adjust tension at the threaded ends, usually with a jam nut arrangement, and the goal is even tension on both cables with the carriages perfectly level, not just “tight.” Overtightening is a real problem we see from well-meaning owners: crank both cables down hard and you accelerate wear on sheaves and swages, and you can actually bind the carriage. How Often to Do It, and Who Should Sign Off

Our baseline for a working shop is a visual look weekly, a hands-on cable check monthly, and a full documented annual inspection by a qualified inspector. That annual is where ALI/ANSI expectations live, and it covers a lot more than cables — locks, arms, anchors, hydraulics, swing arm restraints. But the cable portion is what generates the most replacement orders.

Frequency scales with duty cycle. A two-bay independent doing twenty cars a day needs a tighter interval than a farm shop that raises a truck twice a month. Environment matters as much as volume: unheated pole buildings with concrete floors that sweat in spring, wash bays, and undercoating shops all eat cables faster than a climate-controlled dealership bay. The other half of the equation is documentation — a clipboard on the column with dates and initials is worth more in a liability conversation than any verbal assurance, and it takes ten seconds to fill out.

Inground and Overhead Lifts Get Different Treatment

An overhead two-post puts the equalizer cables up in the crossbeam where they’re relatively dry and accessible. Pop the covers and you can see the full run. Baseplate models route the cables through a floor channel under a steel cover plate, and that’s a completely different inspection because that channel collects everything — water, salt brine, brake dust, oil, dropped hardware. We’ve pulled cover plates and found cables sitting in an inch of rusty slurry.

Inground lifts are their own category, with cables and sheaves living in a pit environment where humidity never leaves. If you’re running an older inground unit, read up on two post in-ground lift cable inspection before you plan a service window, because access alone can double the labor. On any baseplate or inground setup, the two post lift cable inspection has to include cleaning the channel or pit, not just glancing at the cable. Corrosion under a layer of grime looks fine until you wipe it and find pitting. This is also where we find rodent damage in rural Iowa shops — mice nest in warm cable channels and the nesting material holds moisture against the steel all winter.

When Inspection Turns Into Replacement

We replace cables in pairs, always. If one has stretched or frayed enough to warrant replacement, the other has seen identical cycles and is on the same clock. Matching a new cable against an old one guarantees you’ll be back chasing tension in a month. Replacement thresholds we use: any broken strands at all in a high-stress zone, visible corrosion or rust bleed at a swage, kinks or birdcaging anywhere in the run, measurable diameter reduction, or a cable that won’t hold adjustment.

Sourcing is where a lot of shops stall out, because cable length and end fittings are model-specific and a lot of two-post brands from the 1980s and 90s no longer exist.
