A good used lift inspection checklist is the difference between a bargain and a boat anchor, and we’ve watched Iowa shop owners land on both sides of that line. We’re Auto Lift Services out of Ames, Iowa, and a fair share of our week is spent driving to farm shops, closing dealerships, and auction lots to look at secondhand two-post and four-post lifts before somebody wires money. Some of them are genuinely great buys — a 20-year-old Rotary with straight columns and clean carriages will outlive a brand-new import. Others have hidden anchor damage, mismatched cables, or a cylinder that’s been weeping for a decade. This is the checklist we actually use, in the order we use it.

Start With the Data Plate, Not the Paint

Every inspection we do starts at the serial tag, usually riveted to the inside of a column or the base of the power unit. We want manufacturer, model, capacity, and serial number, and we want them legible. That tag is what makes a used lift a supportable machine instead of a mystery. With a model and serial we can pull the original parts breakdown, confirm whether the design was ALI certified when it was built, and tell you within a phone call whether cables and lock dogs are still available or long discontinued. Without it, you’re gambling that every wear part will match something generic.

Paint condition tells you almost nothing. We’ve seen freshly repainted columns hiding weld repairs, and we’ve seen ugly, chipped, faded lifts that were mechanically flawless. So we deliberately look past cosmetics at this stage. While we’re at the tag we also photograph any warning and capacity labels still attached. Missing labels aren’t a dealbreaker, but they’re a hint about how the lift was maintained — a shop that let every decal peel off usually let the grease points go dry too. If the previous owner has the original manual, grab it. On older Rotary and Challenger units especially, that book is worth real money in service time later, and it settles arguments about lubrication intervals and torque specs.

Columns, Baseplates, and the Anchor Story

Next we get low and sight down each column. We’re looking for bow, twist, and any dent that suggests a vehicle got backed into it. A column that’s out of plumb by a visible amount usually means the concrete moved, the anchors pulled, or the lift was overloaded. Then we inspect the baseplates themselves: cracks radiating from anchor holes, elongated holes, or shim stacks taller than a couple of washers all tell us the installation fought the floor.

Anchors are the single most common problem we find on a used lift inspection checklist walkthrough. Pull-out or partially backed-out anchors, spalled concrete cones around the bolts, or bolts that spin freely with a wrench mean the slab was too thin, too green, or too cracked when the lift went in. Ask how thick the concrete is and whether the buyer’s own shop has documented slab thickness — most two-post lifts want a minimum thickness and strength that plenty of older Iowa farm shops simply don’t have. Also check the overhead: on overhead-style two-post lifts, look at the crossbeam for impact damage and at the shutoff bar linkage. On baseplate models, inspect the floor plate for crush damage where cars have driven over it for years. None of these findings automatically kills a deal, but they change what you should be willing to pay and whether relocation costs are realistic.

Cables, Chains, Sheaves, and Equalization

This is the section of our used lift inspection checklist where we find the most expensive surprises. Run the lift up if it’s still powered and watch the equalization cables or chains move. Then bring it down and inspect every accessible inch of cable for broken wires, kinks, flat spots, birdcaging, and rust that flakes off in your hand. A single broken strand is a replace-now condition, not a monitor-it condition. Check the sheaves at the top and bottom of each column — grooves worn into a sharp V, frozen bearings, or a sheave that squeals under load all mean the cable was sawing itself apart.

Budget mentally for a full cable set regardless of what you find. On most two-post lifts, cables are a wear item with a finite life, and replacing them on a machine of unknown history is cheap insurance compared to the alternative. We keep cable sets for common Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas models moving constantly for exactly this reason. Also verify that both cables are the same brand, length, and construction. Mismatched cables are a tell that somebody did a partial repair, and partial repairs on a lift are a pattern, not an accident. If it’s a chain-driven design, look for stretched links, rust-locked rollers, and any chain that’s been shortened with a repair link.

Cylinders, Hoses, and the Power Unit

Wipe the cylinder rod clean and cycle the lift. Fresh oil reappearing on the rod means the packing is done — a rebuild or replacement cylinder, and a real line item. Look for pitting or scoring on the rod, which will chew a new seal in short order. Then follow every hose and hard line. Weeping fittings can be re-sealed; a hose with cracked cover, bulges, or crimped ends should be replaced before the lift ever holds a car in your building.

At the power unit, check the reservoir oil level and color. Milky oil means water intrusion, usually from an outdoor or unheated storage situation. Black, burnt-smelling oil means the pump has been run hot and starved. Note the motor’s voltage and phase — we’ve had more than one Iowa buyer discover their auction bargain was a three-phase unit and their shop is single-phase, which means a new power unit or a converter. Listen to the motor: rhythmic knocking, screaming bearings, or a unit that won’t build pressure past partial travel are all replacement conversations. Finally, check the descent: a lift that drifts down on its own with a load, or drops fast when the release is bumped, has a velocity fuse or flow control problem that must be sorted before use. Locks, Arms, and Adapter Hardware on a Used Lift Inspection Checklist

Safety locks are non-negotiable. We raise the lift and listen for both sides clicking into every position, then set it down onto locks and confirm both carriages seat at the same height. Locks that don’t engage, engage only on one side, or release stiffly point at worn lock dogs, stretched release cables, or bent linkage. On many older units these parts are still available, but the labor to get in there isn’t trivial.

Then we work the arms. Every arm should swing smoothly, restraint gears should engage crisply, and there should be no vertical slop at the arm pin. Elongated pin holes and worn restraint teeth are the classic signs of a lift that lived under heavy trucks. Extend and retract every telescoping section — bent inner tubes and seized slides are common and annoying. Count the adapters and pads: rubber pads are consumables and easy to source, but tall truck adapters, frame cradles, and stack blocks are pricey to replace and often walk off before a sale. Paperwork, Certification, and What Iowa Inspectors Care About

A used lift inspection checklist shouldn’t stop at hardware. Ask for service records, any prior annual inspection reports, and the installation date. In our experience, lifts with documented annual inspections are dramatically better buys — not because the paper matters, but because the shops that inspect also grease, adjust, and replace cables on schedule. If the seller is a closing dealership, there’s a decent chance a real inspection file exists. Ask for it.

Certification is worth understanding before you commit. ALI certification applies to a lift model as built and tested, and it doesn’t automatically follow a machine that’s been relocated, modified, or repaired with non-OEM parts. If your insurance carrier, franchise agreement, or a manufacturer program requires certified equipment, verify that before you buy, not after. What We’d Pay, What We’d Walk From

After hundreds of these walkthroughs, our decision rules are pretty simple. We’ll happily buy an older lift from a major brand with straight columns, sound concrete history, working locks, and available parts, even if it needs cables, seals, and a full cosmetic refresh. Those items are known costs, and once they’re done you have a machine that will run for another decade. Price it accordingly: assume cables, cylinder seals, pads, and a fresh oil change as the floor for any lift you can’t verify service records on.

We walk away from bent or repaired columns, cracked welds anywhere in the load path, obsolete models with no parts support, and any lift where the locks can’t be made to work reliably. We also walk from sellers who won’t let you cycle the lift or won’t share the serial tag. Structural damage and unobtainable parts are the two failure modes you can’t fix with money, and no purchase price makes them acceptable under a customer’s vehicle.
