Why Car Lift Drifts Down: Hydraulic vs. Mechanical Systems

The first thing we ask when a customer describes drift is what kind of lift they have, because the cause list is completely different depending on the system. Hydraulic two-post and in-ground lifts drift because oil is escaping somewhere it shouldn’t — past a cylinder seal, through a leaking hose fitting, or backward through a worn check valve. The fluid has to go somewhere, and if it’s not visibly puddling under the lift, it’s usually seeping internally past a seal and back into the reservoir.

Contaminated or Aerated Hydraulic Fluid

Sometimes the problem isn’t a failed part at all — it’s what’s inside the reservoir. Fluid that’s picked up moisture, dirt, or air bubbles doesn’t seal check valves and seals the way clean fluid does. Aerated fluid compresses slightly under load, which can feel exactly like drift even when every mechanical component is in good shape. This is common on older lifts that haven’t had a fluid service in years, or on lifts stored in unheated Iowa garages where condensation builds up in the reservoir over cold winters.
