When a car lift wont go up or down, most shop owners assume the worst — a blown pump or a dead motor — but in our experience installing and servicing lifts across Iowa, the real cause is usually something simpler and cheaper to fix. A lift that’s totally frozen in both directions is different from one that only struggles going up, and figuring out which category you’re in is the fastest way to narrow down the problem. Start With Power, Not the Pump
Before anyone assumes a lift is mechanically dead, we check power first. A surprising number of service calls where a car lift wont go up or down turn out to be a tripped breaker, a loose disconnect, or a blown fuse inside the control box. Two-post and four-post lifts pull a decent amount of current on startup, and if the circuit was undersized or shared with other shop equipment, it can trip without any obvious warning.
Check the breaker panel first, then check the motor itself for a hum. If the motor hums but the lift doesn’t move, that’s a different problem — usually a bad start capacitor or a seized pump. If there’s no sound at all, look at the up/down toggle or foot switch. These switches take a beating in daily shop use, and a worn contact inside the switch housing is one of the single most common reasons a lift won’t respond in either direction. Safety Locks Can Freeze the Whole System
On two-post lifts especially, the mechanical safety locks are designed to catch the carriage if something goes wrong — but they can also jam the lift solid if a lock arm gets bent, rusted, or misaligned. If your car lift wont go up or down and you hear a clicking or ratcheting sound when you try to operate it, there’s a good chance one of the locks isn’t releasing cleanly.
The release mechanism is usually a cable or rod connected to the up button, and if that cable stretches, frays, or comes loose from its anchor point, the lock never disengages even though the motor is running fine. We see this most on older lifts that haven’t had a full inspection in a few years. It’s a quick fix once you know that’s the issue, but forcing the lift or trying to power through a jammed lock can bend the carriage or crack a casting, which turns a cheap repair into an expensive one. Hydraulic Fluid Level and Air in the Lines
For hydraulic lifts, low fluid or trapped air is one of the top reasons a car lift wont go up or down smoothly, or at all. If the reservoir is low, the pump can spin all day without moving any actual fluid to the cylinder, and you’ll get that telltale whine with no lift movement. Topping off with the correct fluid — never substitute automotive transmission fluid or random hydraulic oil without checking the manufacturer spec — solves a lot of these calls on the spot.
Air in the lines is trickier. It usually shows up as a lift that moves partway up, stalls, and then either won’t continue or drops slightly before catching again. Bleeding the system properly takes some patience, and if you’ve never done it on your specific lift model, it’s worth having someone walk you through it the first time. We’ve had customers make the problem worse by opening the wrong bleed point and introducing more air than they started with. Cylinder and Seal Failure
If fluid level and air are ruled out, the next suspect is the cylinder itself. Worn seals inside the cylinder let fluid bypass instead of building pressure, and a cylinder in this condition might lift a car partway before losing pressure and refusing to go higher — or it might not move at all if the seal failure is severe. This is more common on lifts that are ten-plus years old or that see heavy daily use in a busy shop.
Diagnosing a bad cylinder usually means pressure testing the system or, if you’re comfortable, pulling the cylinder for a visual inspection of the seals and bore. Don’t wait on this one — a cylinder that’s losing pressure gradually can fail suddenly, and that’s not something you want happening with a vehicle in the air.
Cable and Chain Equalization Issues
On cable-driven two-post lifts, uneven cable tension or a snapped strand can make it seem like the whole car lift wont go up or down, when really only one side is affected and the safety system is preventing operation until it’s corrected. Inspect all four cables (or however many your model uses) for fraying, kinks, or visible slack on one side compared to the others.
Four-post and parallelogram lifts that use chains have a similar failure mode — a stretched or jumped chain throws off the synchronization between posts, and many models are designed to stop moving entirely if the platforms get too far out of level with each other. This is a safety feature working as intended, not a malfunction, but it still means the lift is stuck until the chain or cable is adjusted and re-equalized. Control Board and Relay Problems
Newer lifts with electronic control boards add another layer of possible failure points. A bad relay, a corroded connection, or a fault on the control board itself can prevent the up or down command from ever reaching the motor or valve, even though everything else in the system is mechanically sound. This tends to show up as intermittent behavior at first — the lift works fine for a while, then randomly stops responding — before it fails completely.
If you’ve already ruled out power, switches, fluid, and mechanical locks, and the lift still won’t budge, a control board issue is worth checking next. These boards aren’t something we’d recommend troubleshooting blind; a multimeter and the wiring diagram for your specific model make this a lot faster.
