Inspecting a used lift is the single most important thing you can do before you hand over cash for a piece of equipment that’s going to hold up a couple tons of vehicle over your head or your technicians’ heads. Why Inspecting a Used Lift Matters More Than the Price Tag
A cheap lift is only cheap if it works. We’ve seen buyers save a little money up front on a used two-post or four-post only to spend twice that fixing hidden problems, or worse, end up with a piece of equipment that fails an inspection before it ever lifts a car. Inspecting a used lift properly means treating it like a used vehicle purchase, not a garage sale find. You want documentation, you want to see it operate, and you want to physically get underneath it before money changes hands.
This matters even more in Iowa, where equipment gets moved between farm shops, dealerships, and independent garages over decades. A lift that spent fifteen years in a heated shop is a different animal than one that sat outside or near road salt runoff. Age alone doesn’t disqualify a lift — plenty of Rotary and Challenger units built decades ago are still solid performers — but you need to know its history and condition, not just its manufacture year. Sellers rarely volunteer the bad news, so the burden of inspecting a used lift falls on you or on whoever you hire to look at it for you.
Start With the Columns, Posts, and Structural Frame
On a two-post or four-post lift, the columns are the backbone of the whole system. Walk the full height of each column and look for rust bubbling through paint, especially near the base where moisture collects. Surface rust is cosmetic; flaking rust that leaves pitting in the steel is a red flag. Check that the columns are plumb and that there’s no visible bowing or bending, particularly on lifts that may have been overloaded or struck by a vehicle at some point.
Look closely at the welds where the base plates meet the columns and where any cross-bracing attaches on four-post and mobile column units. Cracked welds, especially ones that have been reground or re-welded without documentation, tell you the lift has taken real stress. On four-post lifts, check the runways for warping and make sure the safety locks along each column engage cleanly at multiple heights. None of this takes long, but skipping it is exactly how a bargain lift turns into an expensive mistake.
Check the Cables, Chains, and Pulleys Closely
Cables and chains are wear items, and on a used lift they’re often the first thing to show real age. Look for fraying, kinking, flat spots, or rust between the strands on any cable. Run your hand along accessible sections carefully and look for broken strands poking out. On chain-equalized lifts, check for stretched links and uneven wear that suggests the equalization system has been out of adjustment for a while.
Pulleys and sheaves should spin freely without wobble, and the cable should track cleanly in the groove rather than riding up on the edge, which happens when a pulley is worn or misaligned. If the seller can operate the lift for you, run it up and down slowly and listen for grinding, watch for jerking motion, and confirm both sides rise and fall evenly. Uneven travel between posts is one of the more common and more serious problems we find when inspecting a used lift, and it usually points to a cable or equalization cable that needs replacement before the unit sees any real use.
Test the Hydraulic System and Look for Leaks
Hydraulic cylinders are expensive to replace, so this is where a careful inspection pays for itself. Check the cylinder rod for scoring, pitting, or rust — any of those will chew up the seals quickly once it’s back in service. Look at the base of the cylinder and around all fittings for oil residue, which points to a slow leak that’s easy to miss on a quick walk-around. Ask the seller to run the lift through a full cycle and watch the descent — jerky or bouncy lowering usually means air in the system or a failing seal.
Check the fluid level and condition in the power unit if you can access it. Cloudy, milky, or metallic-smelling fluid suggests water contamination or internal wear inside the pump. A working power unit that starts easily and holds pressure without the lift creeping down is a good sign, but even then we’d budget for a fluid change and a general service before the lift goes into daily use.
Verify the Safety Systems Actually Work
Every lock, latch, and safety mechanism needs to function, not just look present. On two-post lifts, test the locking pawls at multiple height increments and confirm they engage with a solid click rather than a soft catch. Arm restraints and locks on the swing arms should hold firm under load, not rattle loose. On four-post lifts, check that the safety lock bar engages and disengages cleanly at each column.
If the lift has an air-release system for the locks, listen for air leaks in the lines and confirm the release lever actually frees all four (or two) locks simultaneously rather than one lagging behind. A safety system that’s been bypassed, zip-tied open, or missing parts entirely is an immediate disqualifier in our book, no matter how good the rest of the lift looks. This is the one area of inspecting a used lift where we tell customers not to compromise, because it’s the system standing between a technician and a couple tons of steel.
Ask for Paperwork and Service History
A seller who can produce the original manual, ALI certification info, or any service records instantly makes the decision easier. Records tell you how often the lift was serviced, whether it’s had major repairs, and sometimes even how it was used — a lift that only ever lifted light trucks has had an easier life than one that regularly hoisted commercial vans at full capacity. No paperwork isn’t automatically a dealbreaker, but it does mean you should lean harder on the physical inspection.
