A lift with no data plate, or one that’s been ground off, is an immediate red flag; it usually means the unit has been modified, repainted to hide damage, or is old enough that support has dried up.
Ask the seller for maintenance records, even informal ones. A shop that changed cables on schedule and greased columns regularly is a very different purchase than one that ran a lift for fifteen years without touching it. If the seller can’t tell you the brand, the age, or why they’re selling, treat that as information too. Check the Columns, Posts, and Structural Frame
Walk the full height of every column or post and look for rust bubbling through paint, especially near the base where moisture collects. Check every weld joint, especially where arms pivot and where the base plate meets the column. Test the Hydraulics, Cylinders, and Fluid Condition
Ask the seller to raise and lower the lift fully, empty, so you can watch the cycle from bottom to top. Listen for grinding, watch for jerky or uneven travel, and check both sides of a 2-post lift rise together — uneven rise usually points to a cable or synchronization problem. Pull the dipstick or check the reservoir; fluid that’s milky, dark, or full of metal flecks tells you the pump or cylinder has internal wear.
Inspect cylinders for weeping fluid at the rod seal, and look at exposed rod surfaces for pitting or scoring, which will tear new seals almost immediately after you install them. If the lift uses cables, check for fraying, kinks, or flat spots, and confirm the equalizer cable moves freely. A full inspection at this stage saves you from buying a unit that needs a new cylinder or full cable set the week you get it home — costs that can rival what you paid for the lift itself.
Verify the Safety Locks and Arm Restraints
Every lock and latch should engage cleanly at each notch without hesitation, and it should release smoothly when you pull the release cable or handle — not stick, not require force, not skip a notch. Test this at multiple heights, not just fully raised, since worn locks sometimes only show a problem partway up the travel range. On 2-post lifts, check that arm restraints and locking pins hold the arms in position without play; loose arms are a classic sign of a unit that’s had heavy, uneven use.

A used lift rated for lighter passenger cars won’t safely handle the pickups and SUVs that dominate Iowa driveways and shop bays. Before you buy, decide honestly what you’ll be lifting — daily commuters, farm trucks, or heavier commercial vehicles — and buy capacity with margin, not exactly to the edge of what you need today. Configuration matters too: a low-clearance 2-post might not fit your ceiling height, and a wide 4-post might not fit your bay width once you account for walk-around space.
