What a Bypass Valve Actually Does

Every mechanical two-post lift uses an equalization system to keep both cylinders rising at the same rate, and on most Rotary and Challenger lifts that system depends on a small bypass valve built into each cylinder. As the piston rises, it hits a point near the top of its stroke where the bypass valve opens and lets hydraulic fluid pass by, effectively stopping that cylinder while the other one catches up. Once both sides are level, the system re-engages and the lift finishes its rise together. It’s a simple, mechanical solution, and it works well for years — until wear, debris, or a worn seal changes the timing.

Understanding this mechanism is the first step in real lift cylinder bypass troubleshooting, because a lot of technicians assume any unevenness means a leak. In reality, a bypass valve that’s stuck open, worn, or knocked out of position will produce symptoms that look almost identical to a slow external leak but have nothing to do with fluid loss. The Classic Symptom: One Side Won’t Catch Up

Before assuming the worst, run the lift down completely, empty, and watch both carriages closely as they rise together. Note exactly where the lag starts — right off the ground, midway, or only near full height. That location tells you a lot. A lag that shows up early in the stroke usually points to a valve that isn’t seating, while a lag near the top is more consistent with normal bypass function that’s just slightly out of adjustment. Ruling Out an External Leak First

Because bypass symptoms and leak symptoms overlap so much, we always tell shop owners to rule out an actual leak before touching the bypass valve. Skipping this step is the number one reason shops end up replacing a perfectly good cylinder when the real fix was much simpler and considerably cheaper.

Contamination Is a Bigger Culprit Than People Think

Hydraulic fluid that’s been in service for years, or fluid that was topped off with the wrong type, carries debris that loves to settle in small valve passages. A bypass valve only needs a tiny piece of grit or a film of sludge to stop seating correctly, and that alone can throw off equalization even on an otherwise healthy cylinder. We’ve pulled cylinders apart expecting worn seals and instead found nothing more than dirty fluid gumming up the bypass mechanism.

If your lift is more than a few years old and you can’t remember the last fluid change, that’s worth addressing before any other lift cylinder bypass troubleshooting step. Drain the reservoir, flush the lines if possible, and refill with the fluid type specified by the manufacturer — never substitute automotive transmission fluid or generic hydraulic oil without checking compatibility. When Bypass Bypassing Signals a Bigger Problem

Sometimes a cylinder appears to bypass at the wrong point consistently, cycle after cycle, no matter how many times you flush fluid or adjust the linkage. That kind of repeatable, predictable failure usually means physical wear inside the cylinder bore or on the valve seat itself, not a temporary contamination issue. At this stage, we recommend measuring bore wear if you have the tooling, or sending photos of the disassembled cylinder to a lift technician who can spot scoring or an out-of-round bore quickly. Continuing to run a lift with a worn bypass seat is a safety issue, not just an inconvenience, because unpredictable equalization means unpredictable carriage height under load. If measurements show wear beyond spec, replacement is the responsible call rather than another round of adjustments.

Adjusting and Testing After Any Repair

Run the lift up and down fully loaded and unloaded several times, checking carriage height at multiple points in the stroke each time. Document the height difference, if any, at the top of full travel and compare it against the manufacturer’s allowable tolerance — most two-post lifts allow a small amount of variance, not perfect equality.
