Most shops start by picking a lift model and then figuring out where it goes. We think that’s backwards. Lift bay layout planning should start with a tape measure and a walk of the actual space — ceiling height, column spacing, door location, floor drains, and where the electrical panel sits. A two post lift needs enough width for arm swing and enough runway depth for the tallest vehicle you service with the doors open. A four post lift needs a longer footprint and clearance behind it for a technician to walk a full lap.

We’ve seen shops order a lift that technically fits the floor space on paper but leaves no room to open a service door, roll a parts cart through, or back a second vehicle in behind it. That’s a planning failure, not an equipment failure. Four post lifts need extra depth behind the ramps for backing vehicles up and enough width for a rolling jack to maneuver underneath when needed.

We also plan for the busiest moment in the bay, not the calmest one. If two techs are working adjacent lifts at the same time, can they both open doors, pull hoses, and move a jack without colliding? Bays with irregular shapes or shared use as a wash bay or alignment bay sometimes work better with mobile column lifts that don’t require fixed floor anchors in the same spot every time.

A four post is often the right call when technicians need to walk under the vehicle for alignment or long-duration work. Getting this match right during layout planning, rather than after the lift arrives, is the difference between a bay that works for years and one that’s fighting its own geometry every day.

Planning for Growth, Not Just Today’s Fleet

A layout that fits today’s vehicles perfectly can fall apart the day a customer brings in a one-ton dually or a lifted truck. Smart lift bay layout planning builds in margin — wider spacing than the smallest vehicle needs, ceiling height that accounts for taller trucks, and lift capacity rated above your current average job. We ask every shop owner what the biggest vehicle they’ve turned away looked like, because that’s usually the real design target, not the average sedan.

This also applies to future bays. If you’re only installing one lift now but might add two more in three years, laying out the whole space today — even the empty bays — prevents a mismatched, patchwork shop later.
