Two post lift bay layout planning is the single most skipped step in a home garage or small shop build-out, and it’s the reason we get calls every month from Iowa owners staring at a lift they can’t actually use the way they pictured. A two post lift only works if the bay around it — ceiling height, column spacing, door swing, and floor thickness — was measured before the order went in, not after the crate showed up. Start With Ceiling Height, Not Floor Space

Most people begin two post lift bay layout planning by measuring the floor, but ceiling height is what actually eliminates options first. A typical 9,000 to 10,000 lb two post lift needs roughly 12 feet of clearance to fully raise a vehicle with the arms extended, and taller SUVs or trucks on the lift add more. If your bay has ductwork, a garage door track, or a lighting fixture hanging below 12 feet, that overhead obstruction becomes the real ceiling for your equipment, not the roofline.

That single beam can force a shop into a lower-rise lift or a different bay entirely. Before you spend time on column spacing or arm reach, get an actual tape measure on the lowest hanging obstruction in the bay you’re planning to use, not the highest point of the ceiling. Column Spacing And Drive-Through Width

Two post lifts come in different width configurations, and the column spacing has to match both your vehicles and your bay’s usable width. A standard-width lift works fine for most passenger cars and light trucks, but if your shop regularly services full-size duallies or extended vans, you need a wider column spacing option or the doors won’t clear the posts. We size this against your actual vehicle mix, not a generic average, because guessing wrong here means retrofitting a bay you already poured anchors into.

Beyond the columns themselves, factor in walking clearance on both sides. A tight bay might fit the lift’s footprint on paper but leave no room for a technician to move around an open door or a rolling cart. Iowa shops running two-bay or four-bay layouts often forget to plan the space between adjacent lifts, not just between the lift and the wall. We generally recommend enough side clearance that two vehicles on neighboring lifts can have their doors open simultaneously without hardware contact. Floor Thickness And Anchor Requirements

A two post lift transfers enormous load through four to six anchor bolts, and the concrete underneath has to be rated for it. Most manufacturers specify a minimum slab thickness, often 4 inches of properly cured concrete without excessive rebar interference, and anything less risks anchor pull-out under load. Older Iowa buildings, pole barns with thin pours, and additions poured without lift use in mind are the most common problem spots we encounter.

Before you finalize a layout, have someone check the slab’s age, thickness, and condition in the exact spot the columns will sit — not just anywhere in the bay. A structurally sound area ten feet to the left of your ideal spot is worth more than a compromised pour exactly where you first imagined the lift going. Door Swing, Arm Reach, And Approach Angle

Once columns are placed, the arms and their reach determine whether a vehicle can actually be positioned and lifted safely inside your bay. Short-arm setups struggle with longer wheelbase vehicles, while excessive column spacing can leave the arms unable to reach factory lift points on smaller cars. This is where a lot of DIY layouts fall apart — the lift fits the room, but no configuration of the arms lines up with the vehicle’s pickup points.

Consider also how vehicles enter and exit relative to your bay door and any adjacent equipment. A lift positioned too close to a garage door track can interfere with door travel, and one set too far back may leave insufficient room to swing a vehicle door open once it’s raised. Electrical, Air Lines, And Utility Placement

Two post lifts need a dedicated power drop, and most shops also want a compressed air line nearby for tools used during the lift’s operation. Planning utility placement as part of your layout — not as an afterthought — saves you from running exposed conduit across a walkway or routing an air hose through someone’s work zone. We map utility drops based on final column position, so it pays to lock in the layout before an electrician runs conduit.

Think through where a technician actually stands while operating the lift controls, and place switches and air fittings within comfortable reach from that spot. Overhead drops tend to work better than floor-level ones in busy bays, since they stay out of the way of rolling jacks and parts carts. Multi-Bay Layouts And Future Expansion

If you’re planning more than one lift, sequencing matters.
