Before anyone reaches for a replacement cylinder, we always ask what the bore looks like and how the lift has been used, because a rebuild can save real money if the barrel is in good shape. When a Rebuild Makes Sense

Not every leaking or sagging scissor lift needs a new cylinder. If the bore is smooth, free of pitting, and the rod isn’t scored or bent, a scissor lift cylinder rebuild is almost always the cheaper and faster route. We pull the cylinder, inspect the bore with a light and a fingernail test for scratches, and check the rod for straightness on a set of V-blocks. If everything measures clean, a fresh seal kit, new wipers, and a properly honed bore will usually get the lift back to spec.

Chattering or jerky motion as the platform rises can point to air in the system, but if bleeding doesn’t fix it, worn seals letting fluid bypass internally are usually the real cause. We also see cylinders that groan or feel spongy near full extension, which often means the packing has hardened with age. What the Rebuild Process Involves

If the bore has light surface rust or minor scoring, honing can often restore it without replacing the whole barrel, which keeps the cost well below a new cylinder.

Reassembly matters as much as the teardown. Seals installed dry or with the wrong lubricant tear on the first stroke, and a rod seated crooked will bind and fail early. But if the cylinder has deep scoring, a bent rod, or corrosion has eaten into the bore wall, honing won’t fix it and you’re better off replacing the unit outright rather than chasing a rebuild that won’t hold pressure.

Downtime is the other piece of the equation. Hydraulic System Health Beyond the Cylinder

A cylinder rebuild only solves half the problem if the hydraulic fluid feeding it is contaminated or the power unit’s filter is clogged.
