A lift safety walkthrough is the single cheapest thing a shop can do to keep a technician from getting hurt and keep a lift out of the scrap pile, and it is also the thing we get called about last. When we walk into a shop for the first time, we are not there to sell a new lift. We are there to look at anchors, cables, chains, locks, arm restraints, and concrete, and to tell you honestly what is fine, what is wearing, and what needs to come out of service today.

Why we start at the floor, not the lift
Most people expect us to grab a flashlight and go straight for the cables. We start on our knees at the base plates instead. A two-post lift transfers everything it lifts into a handful of anchor bolts and the concrete around them, and concrete is the part nobody thinks about until it fails. We look for hairline cracks radiating out from the anchors, spalling at the edge of the base plate, and any gap under the plate that says the column has been rocking. We tap each anchor bolt and check it against the torque spec in the manufacturer’s manual — not a generic number, the actual spec for that model.
We also measure slab thickness where we can, because a lot of central Iowa buildings were poured as warehouse or granary floors long before anyone thought about hanging a pickup off them. We have found four-inch slabs under 12,000 lb lifts more than once, and unreinforced pours with no rebar at all. That does not automatically mean the lift comes out, but it changes what we recommend and it goes in writing. If a base plate has lifted even a sixteenth of an inch under load, we will tell you to stop using that column until it is re-anchored properly, sometimes with a poured pad. Nothing else we check during the walkthrough matters if the floor underneath is not holding.
Cables, chains, and the failures you can feel before you see
On any cable-equalized two-post, the cables are the component with the clearest wear story. We run a gloved hand along the full length of each one, looking for broken strands, birdcaging, flat spots where the cable has been riding a worn sheave, and rust bloom where water has wicked into the core. One broken wire in a strand is a warning. Several in one lay length means it comes out of service and the cables get replaced as a set, never one at a time. We also check sheave bearings for drag, because a seized sheave chews a brand-new cable in a matter of months.
Chain-driven lifts get the same treatment with different symptoms. We measure chain stretch against a known length, check for tight links that will not articulate, and look at how the chain sits on the sprocket. Uneven carriage travel is usually the first thing a technician notices — one side rising ahead of the other, or a shudder partway up the column. That is almost always an equalization problem, and it is fixable long before it becomes dangerous if someone catches it. We put all of this in a written report with photos, so a shop owner has something to hand an insurance adjuster or a corporate inspector instead of a verbal “looks fine.”
Locks, arm restraints, and the safety devices people disable
Mechanical locks are the part of the lift that keeps a vehicle up when hydraulics let go, and they are the part most likely to be quietly out of commission. During a lift safety walkthrough we raise the lift through its full travel and listen for every lock to click into every position, then set it down onto each latch and watch for one carriage settling. Sticky locks are usually a lubrication or cable-adjustment issue. Locks that have been tied back with wire or zip-tied out of the way — and yes, we find that — are an immediate shutdown.
Arm restraints are next. On a two-post, the gear-and-pin restraint keeps the arms from swinging out from under a pad when a technician bumps a tire or pulls hard on a stubborn suspension bolt. Worn restraint gears let the arm creep, and a creeping arm is how vehicles come off lifts. We check every restraint under load, not just sitting empty. We also verify the overhead shutoff bar or limit switch works, that the hydraulic hoses are not chafing on a column, and that the lift has legible capacity labels and a current ANSI/ALI safety placard. Missing labels sound like a technicality until someone unfamiliar with the equipment loads it wrong.
What a walkthrough looks like on 4-post, scissor, and inground lifts
Different lift types fail in different places, so the checklist changes. On a 4-post, we spend most of the time on the four lifting cables and their sheaves, the runway lock ladders, and the slack-cable safety. We look for runway deflection and check that the lift is still level front-to-back and side-to-side, because a 4-post that has drifted out of level puts uneven load on two cables instead of four. Rolling jacks get their own inspection — bridge rails, jack pads, and the little hydraulic pumps that nobody services until they leak.
Scissor and mid-rise lifts hide their wear inside the linkage. We pull covers, look at pivot pins and bushings for ovaling, and check the cylinder rods for pitting that will destroy a seal. Torsion-bar and flow-divider synchronization gets verified under load. Inground lifts are the ones we get called about most in older Iowa dealerships and municipal garages: we check for hydraulic seepage around the packings, look for signs the containment is compromised, and evaluate whether the superstructure has enough life left to justify a rebuild. On those, honest answers matter more than upsells. Sometimes a rebuild kit and fresh seals give you another decade, and sometimes the right recommendation is a surface lift and a filled hole.
How often shops should book one
ANSI/ALI ALOIM calls for an annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and that is the baseline we tell every shop in Iowa to hold themselves to. In practice, usage drives the interval. A one-bay independent shop that puts a couple hundred vehicles a year on a lift is genuinely fine on an annual lift safety walkthrough. A high-volume tire and alignment shop running eight bays hard, six days a week, sees enough cycles that we would rather look at those lifts twice a year — cables and locks on a heavily cycled lift wear at a completely different rate.
Daily and monthly checks are the shop’s job, not ours, and we walk your team through those while we are on site. Daily: look at cables, listen for locks, check for leaks under the columns, verify the arms swing and restraints engage. Monthly: grease the slider blocks and sheave pins, check hydraulic fluid level, wipe down and inspect anchor bolts. That routine catches a surprising share of what we would otherwise find a year later as a real problem. Red-tagging a lift and what happens next
The hardest part of any lift safety walkthrough is telling an owner their lift is coming out of service. We do it anyway, and we do it in writing. A red tag from us means one of a short list of things: anchors that will not hold torque or concrete that has failed around them, cables with broken strands or severe corrosion, a lock that will not engage or has been defeated, arm restraints that let the arms move under load, or structural damage to a column or carriage. Those are not maintenance items. They are the difference between a lift and a hazard.
What we try never to do is red-tag a lift and walk away. Before we leave we tell you what the repair looks like, whether the parts are still available for that model and serial, roughly what tier of cost you are looking at, and how long the bay will be down. Most red tags we write get cleared in a week or two with a cable set, a lock kit, or a re-anchor. A few turn into replacement conversations, usually on lifts old enough that parts have gone obsolete.
