He’d heard from three different people that auto lifts for home garage alignment work all need three-phase power, and he was ready to walk away from the whole project over it. This is the single biggest misconception we run into, and it usually comes from guys who’ve worked around big commercial hoists at a dealership or heavy truck shop. Almost every residential-grade unit we sell and install for auto lifts for home garage use runs on standard single-phase 220-240V circuits — the same type of circuit that powers a welder or an electric dryer. A single-phase motor on a two-post or four-post home unit typically pulls in the range most home electrical panels can support with a dedicated 20-30 amp circuit, depending on the specific hydraulic power unit.

A Challenger CL10 or similar model gets specified a lot for this exact reason; it gives you the stability and lift geometry alignment work actually needs.

We’ve had customers try to save money on a lighter-duty lift not designed with alignment racks or turn plates in mind, and it costs them accuracy on every single vehicle after. Concrete, Floor Prep, and What We Actually Check On Site

We need to know the age and thickness of your slab, whether there’s a pit anywhere nearby, and whether the garage floor has any cracking or settling before we anchor anything down. A four-post or two-post unit anchored into undersized or old, crumbling concrete is a liability no matter how good the electrical is.

We also ask every customer whether they’ve got a forklift on site or if our crew needs to plan for hand-unloading equipment, because that changes scheduling and staging on install day. Bolted Down vs. Not Bolted Down — The Real Tradeoff

Some home storage and four-post lifts are marketed as mobile, meaning they don’t have to be bolted to the floor. That flexibility is appealing if you might rearrange your garage down the road, but for alignment work specifically, we lean toward recommending anchored installations every time. A lift that isn’t bolted down will drift out of sync between the two runways over time, especially on a floor with any irregularities, and once that happens your alignment numbers become unreliable no matter how good the lift itself is.

We’ve also found that non-bolted lifts need more frequent return visits to retorque cables and readjust — and once a lift has been moved, readjusting doesn’t hold, because the floor irregularities just throw it back out again. If your business depends on accurate alignment readings, that’s not a tradeoff worth making to save on install cost. Choosing the Right Model for an EV-Focused Shop

EV specialty work in northwest Iowa is still a growing niche, and the lift world hasn’t fully caught up with marketing built specifically for it, so a lot of the decision-making falls on matching general-purpose commercial specs to EV-specific needs. Battery pack weight, low ride height, and unusual lift-point locations on many EVs mean you want adjustable, low-profile arms and enough capacity headroom above what the spec sheet says a comparable gas vehicle needs. We typically point EV-focused shops toward Challenger or Rotary models with generous capacity ratings rather than lighter-duty home units, even in a home-garage-style single-bay setup.

We also recommend thinking ahead about arm reach and pad placement, since EV battery housings sit differently than a traditional gas vehicle’s frame rails, and a lift set up around old habits from gas vehicle work can end up damaging a pack if the technician isn’t careful. Getting Your Install Scheduled Right

We tell every customer to lock in their electrical and floor prep work while they wait on the lift itself, so install day isn’t held up by a problem that could’ve been solved weeks earlier.
