He’d been putting off the purchase for over a year, mostly because he wasn’t sure financing was realistic for a home shop project instead of a commercial account.

We steered him toward a 4-post configuration with drive-on ramps, which gave him a stable working surface and made it easy to roll tool carts and welding equipment right up alongside the vehicle.
We also talked through rolling jacks and bridge jacks as add-ons, since restoration work often means pulling wheels off entirely to work on brakes, axles, or frame rails. A 4-post lift without a rolling bridge jack can leave you stuck holding a corner of the truck up with a floor jack anyway, which defeats some of the purpose. Unanchored lifts are popular in home garages with nicer floors that owners don’t want drilled, but they come with a tradeoff — cables can fall out of sync over time since there’s nothing holding the columns in a fixed position relative to each other, and that usually means a return service call to readjust.
For someone doing heavy welding and grinding work, we don’t recommend skipping the anchor bolts. The extra stability matters when you’re applying uneven force to the vehicle during disassembly, and it protects the investment in both the lift and the vehicle sitting on it. He agreed, and we included anchoring in the original quote rather than adding it as a surprise line item later.
Install Day and What Actually Happened
Install day went about as smoothly as these things go. We arrived, unloaded the columns and crossmembers, set the lift in position, leveled it against the slab, anchored it, and ran the cables and hydraulics through their initial adjustment. For a 4-post lift like this, that process typically takes a chunk of a workday, and we always run it through a full cycle before we leave — up, down, safety locks engaged, columns checked for level and sync. We don’t consider an install finished until the lift is actually holding weight correctly and the cables aren’t drifting.
The builder was on-site for most of it, asking the kind of practical questions we like getting: how often to grease the columns, what to check if the cables start looking uneven, how to know if a cable needs replacing versus just re-tensioning. Those are good habits to build early, especially for a lift that’s going to see the kind of hard use a fabrication project puts on it. We left him with maintenance basics and our number for anything that came up down the line.
