If you turn wrenches on BMWs, Audis, VWs, or Mercedes anywhere near the Iowa Great Lakes region, you already know the biggest headache with alignment work isn’t the alignment itself — it’s getting underneath the car to deal with exhaust flanges, driveshaft carrier bearings, and center supports that are seized solid. Myth: A baseplate model is always the “safer” choice for a busy shop

We hear this constantly from owners who assume baseplate means simpler and simpler means fewer things to go wrong. That’s backwards for a lot of European specialty work. A baseplate-style bendpak 4-post alignment lift bolts its runways to steel plates that sit on top of the slab, and while that’s a legitimate configuration, it puts a physical rail structure between the tech and the underside of the car exactly where you don’t want it — right where a BMW’s aluminum exhaust hangers and driveshaft flex discs live.

An overhead configuration, by contrast, runs the hydraulic and safety-lock hardware up top instead of underneath, leaving the runway area open for creepers, transmission jacks, and two techs working a stuck center support bearing at the same time. For shops doing volume exhaust and driveline work on cars that already fight you every step of the way, that clearance isn’t a luxury — it’s the difference between a 45-minute job and a two-hour job. We’ve re-quoted more than one shop that bought baseplate first and called us a year later asking what it would cost to switch.

Myth: Overhead configs need a taller building than you have

This is the objection we field most from shops in older buildings around the lakes region with lower ceiling clearance. It’s a fair question, but it’s usually based on outdated numbers. Overhead bendpak 4-post alignment lift columns and cross-beam clearance have improved enough that most shops built for a standard 2-post drive-on lift already have the height to run overhead safely. We measure ceiling height, column spacing, and door clearance before we ever quote a job specifically because this myth causes so many shops to talk themselves out of the better setup without checking.

We’d rather walk your bay with a tape measure than have you assume you’re stuck with baseplate because of a ceiling number you’re guessing at. In several cases we’ve measured for European shops in this region, the existing bay had six inches to a foot more clearance than the owner remembered, which opened up the overhead option they thought was off the table.

Myth: Recessed / flush-mount is only worth it for high-volume general repair shops

Recessed installation — where the runways sit flush with the shop floor instead of standing a few inches above it — gets pitched as a nice-to-have for tire shops running fast in-and-out traffic. For a European specialty shop, it matters just as much, maybe more. Rolling a low-clearance sport sedan or a lowered Audi onto ramps that stand several inches off the floor is a real risk to front splitters and lower control arms. The tradeoff is that recessed installs require pit work, concrete cutting, and drainage planning, which is a bigger job than a surface-mount install. We tell shops considering this route to plan for it during a remodel or new build rather than retrofitting an existing bay, since cutting into a working shop floor means downtime you have to schedule around. If you’re building new or expanding, this is the point in the process to have that conversation with us, not after the concrete’s already poured.

Myth: Any concrete slab is good enough for either configuration

We get this call more than any other: a shop has a slab, assumes it’s fine, and finds out during the site visit that it isn’t rated for the point loads a loaded 4-post rack puts down, especially with a heavier German sedan or SUV sitting up top plus rolling jacks underneath. Baseplate and overhead configurations both need a slab that meets thickness and PSI specs — this isn’t a spot where you can improvise. We check slab thickness, age, and condition on every install quote before we schedule anything, because pouring a new pad after the fact costs more than doing it right the first time.

This is also where the overhead-vs-baseplate decision interacts with reality: baseplate loads concentrate differently than a lift with columns anchored independently, so a slab that’s borderline for one configuration might be fine, or might not be, for the other. We’d rather have that conversation before delivery day than show up with a lift on a truck and find out the floor isn’t ready.

Myth: Alignment software and turnplates are a “figure it out later” purchase

Shops sometimes buy the lift structure first and treat the alignment console, turnplates, and slip plates as an afterthought. For general repair that might slide. For European work, where camber and caster tolerances are tighter and adjustment points are more sensitive, mismatched or bargain-bin alignment electronics undercut the whole investment. We’ve also seen shops try to save money by pairing a new lift with an old alignment head unit that isn’t calibrated for it. That mismatch shows up as chased tolerances and comebacks, which costs more in tech time than the software would have cost outright. Plan the full package, not just the steel.

Myth: Installation is a one-day job you can schedule loosely

We tell every shop the same thing we tell alignment-lift customers across Iowa: budget for at least a two-day install, and plan to stay off the lift for several hours afterward while the grout cures. We transit-level and grout every alignment lift we install so it holds true over years of use instead of drifting after a few months of daily loading. Shops that rush this step, or try to run alignments the same afternoon, are the ones calling us back with tolerance complaints.

Freight and site readiness matter too. Have your dock or forklift access sorted, know whether you’ve got a pit or slab-mount situation, and give us realistic lead time on delivery — alignment racks aren’t small parcel freight, and scheduling around a tight shop calendar works a lot better when we know your constraints going in.

Myth: Once it’s installed, service and parts are someone else’s problem

A lot of shops treat lift purchase and lift service as two separate relationships, then struggle to find anyone who’ll answer the phone when a cylinder needs reseal work or a safety lock sticks years down the road.
