No arm positioning. A 2-post lift requires you to swing arms under the vehicle and set them at specific lift points. This requires knowledge of each vehicle’s pick points, the physical effort of positioning heavy steel arms, and the risk of frame damage if arms are set incorrectly. A 4-post lift eliminates all of this — drive on and press the button.
Vehicle storage capability. A 2-post lift is not designed for long-term vehicle storage. The vehicle hangs from its frame or pinch welds, putting sustained stress on those contact points. A 4-post lift supports the vehicle on its tires, which is how vehicles are designed to sit — the same as parking on the ground, just elevated.
Simpler installation. A 4-post lift distributes weight across four columns instead of two, reducing the per-anchor load on your garage floor. Many home garages have thinner concrete than commercial shops, making the distributed load of a 4-post design advantageous.
Less ceiling height required. Residential garages typically have 9 to 10-foot ceilings. A 4 post car lift for home use with modest rise height can operate in these spaces. A full-rise 2-post lift needs 12 feet or more.
BendPak HD-9 Series
The BendPak HD-9 is the most popular residential 4-post lift in the United States. BendPak has been building lifts for decades and the HD-9 series reflects that experience with features specifically designed for home garage use.
Capacity
Nine thousand pounds. This handles any passenger vehicle, crossover, SUV, or light truck. A Ford F-150 at its heaviest configuration weighs about 5,700 pounds. A Chevrolet Suburban weighs about 6,200 pounds. A Corvette weighs about 3,600 pounds. The HD-9 handles all of them with thousands of pounds of margin.
Configurations
BendPak offers several HD-9 variants to fit different garage situations:
Standard width fits garages with 10 to 12-foot wide bays. Runway width accommodates standard passenger vehicles, crossovers, and most trucks.
Narrow width fits tighter garages. The reduced runway spacing works for passenger cars and smaller crossovers but may not accommodate wider trucks.
Extended length adds runway length for full-size trucks and SUVs with long wheelbases. If you are storing an F-150 SuperCrew, Silverado Crew Cab, or similar long-bed truck, the extended version prevents the rear tires from running off the end of the runways.

Drip trays. Slide under the upper vehicle to catch any fluid drips — oil seepage, coolant weeps, or condensation. Protects both the garage floor and the vehicle parked below.

Electrical
The HD-9 runs on 208-230V single-phase power. Most home garages have 120V outlets as standard. You will need a 230V, 30-amp circuit run from your electrical panel to the garage — an electrician can typically do this for $500 to $1,500 depending on distance and panel capacity.
Some HD-9 configurations offer 110V operation for homes where adding a 230V circuit is impractical. Rise time is slower on 110V, but for a 4 post car lift for home use where you are lifting and storing — not cycling 50 times a day — the slower rise is acceptable.
Ceiling Height
The HD-9 requires a minimum ceiling height that varies by configuration. Standard residential garages with 9 to 10-foot ceilings can accommodate the shorter-rise models. Taller garages (11-12 feet) can run the full-rise configurations with more headroom above the stored vehicle. Measure your ceiling height at the planned installation location — below garage door tracks, lighting fixtures, and any overhead storage.
Atlas PRO8000
The Atlas PRO8000 delivers 8,000 pounds of capacity at a lower price point than the BendPak HD-9. For home users whose primary need is vehicle stacking and occasional light service, the PRO8000 provides reliable performance without premium features.
Capacity
Eight thousand pounds handles all passenger vehicles and most light trucks. The curb weight of an F-150 at its heaviest (5,700 lb) fits within the PRO8000’s capacity with 2,300 pounds of margin. Full-size SUVs like the Tahoe and Expedition also fit comfortably.
PRO8000 vs PRO8000EXT
The standard PRO8000 accommodates standard-wheelbase vehicles. The PRO8000EXT (extended) adds runway length for trucks and SUVs with longer wheelbases. If you plan to store a full-size pickup or large SUV, the extended version is the right choice.
What Makes It Different from the HD-9
The PRO8000 is a more straightforward lift — fewer configuration options, simpler approach ramps, and a more basic power unit. The core functionality is the same: drive on, raise, store. For home users who want a reliable lift without paying for features they may not need, the PRO8000 is the practical choice.
How to Pick the Right Lift for Your Garage
Measure Everything First
Before you order a 4 post car lift for home, measure three things:
Ceiling height. From the floor to the lowest overhead obstruction — garage door track, light fixture, beam, or ceiling surface. You need enough clearance for the lift at full rise plus the height of the stored vehicle.
Bay width. The lift columns need floor space on both sides of the vehicle. Measure the width available for the lift footprint, accounting for walls, workbenches, storage shelves, and clearance for car doors.
Bay depth. The lift runways plus approach ramps need more depth than just the vehicle length. Add 3 to 5 feet beyond the vehicle length for the ramp approach and rear clearance.
Check Your Electrical
If you only have 120V in your garage, budget for a 230V circuit installation. Contact an electrician before ordering — some panels may need an upgrade to accommodate the new circuit.
Check Your Concrete
Home garage slabs are often thinner than commercial shop floors. Minimum concrete thickness for a 4-post lift is typically 4 inches at 3,000 PSI. If your garage was built before the 1980s, the slab may be thinner. A core test confirms thickness and strength before you commit to a purchase.
What Vehicles Will You Store
If you are only storing passenger cars and small crossovers, the standard-width, standard-length configuration works. If you are storing trucks, SUVs, or long-wheelbase vehicles, buy the extended version. Trying to park a vehicle that overhangs the runways is unsafe — the rear tires can roll off the edge.
