2 Car 4 Post Lift: An Iowa Buyer’s Guide

A 2 car 4 post lift is the answer for Iowa buyers who ran out of floor space before they ran out of vehicles. Auto Lift Services installs and stocks these lifts across the state, from our Ames base out through Des Moines, Ankeny, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Waterloo, Sioux City, and Council Bluffs. We help hobbyists, small independent shops, and pole-barn owners match runway length, weight rating, and column height to the actual building instead of guessing off a spec sheet, and we back every install with parts support for the life of the equipment.

Why a 2 car 4 post lift makes sense for storage

The most common call we get for this style of lift starts the same way. Someone in central Iowa built a new pole building, poured concrete, and realized they collect cars faster than they add floor space. A 2 car 4 post lift solves that neatly, because you drive one vehicle up onto the runways, raise the lift, and park a second vehicle underneath in the same footprint. You doubled your storage without pouring more slab or framing more square footage.

A homeowner in the Des Moines metro last spring put up a 30-by-40 pole barn shop with 12-foot sidewalls. He wanted to keep a passenger vehicle around 7,000 pounds up top and slide a daily driver underneath. That is a textbook fit, and it is exactly the sort of buyer we spend the most time helping, because the right choice depends more on the building than on the lift itself.

Ceiling height, concrete, and the pole-barn question

Before we quote anything we ask three questions. How tall are your sidewalls? How thick is your concrete? And is the slab rebar-reinforced or plain broom finish? A residential four-post car storage lift wants roughly 11 to 12 feet of clear ceiling for two average sedans stacked. Trucks and SUVs need more. If your shop has 16-foot ceilings you have all the room you need; if you are working with an 11-foot attached garage it is still possible but you may be limited on what parks underneath.

Concrete matters more than most buyers expect. Four-inch standard slab is usually fine for a home-storage lift because the load spreads across four column feet instead of two. Six-inch with rebar and in-floor heat is even better, and we see it more often than you would think in newer Iowa pole buildings. If you are unsure, we will review your pour before you spend the money.

Weight capacity for your 2 car 4 post lift

Home-storage buyers usually land in the 7,000 to 9,000 pound range. A 7K rating covers passenger cars and small SUVs. An 8K to 9K rating handles most half-ton pickups, larger SUVs, and heavier classics. A first-generation Camaro or an early Bronco, for example, sits comfortably under 9K. If you plan to park a three-quarter-ton diesel truck or a lifted Suburban up top, step to 10K or 12K instead.

Our advice is to size for the heaviest vehicle you realistically expect to own in the next ten years, not the lightest one in the garage today. You can always park a lighter car on a heavier-rated lift; you cannot do it the other way around. When someone tells us they are shopping a 2 car 4 post lift and asks for the 7K price only, we still show the 9K numbers so they see the delta before committing.

Runway length and 3.5-car garage fit

Runway length is the other measurement that trips up first-time buyers. Standard home-storage runways are around 175 to 180 inches long, which handles anything from a Miata to a full-size half-ton crew cab. Extended runways add another foot or so on each end for long-bed trucks or dually applications. If you are working inside a 3.5-car attached garage the standard length usually clears the door with room to walk around the ends, but we still measure before we ship.

Drive-thru style four-post lifts are open at both ends so you can pull straight through, park, and lower. That matters when your building has a door at each end of the bay. If you have a single overhead door and a back wall you can still use these lifts. You just back out the same way you came in. Send us a floor plan and we will confirm which orientation makes the most sense for your building.

Rolling jacks, drip trays, and caster kits

A four-post storage lift is honestly not that useful for real wrench work by itself, because the wheels stay on the runways, so brake jobs and suspension work require getting the tires up. That is where a set of rolling jacks earns its keep. A pair of jacks sits between the runways, cradles the frame or the axle, and lifts the wheels free. For maintenance-focused buyers we recommend budgeting for one pair of rolling jacks up front.

Drip trays are cheap insurance if the vehicle on top leaks anything at all. Aluminum trays slide between the runways under the drivetrain and catch drips before they land on the car below. Caster kits are another common add-on, because a set of four wheels bolts to the column bases so you can move the lift to a different bay when it is empty. We hear the caster question on almost every 2 car 4 post lift quote, so we spec it before you ask.

Delivery, install, and pickup across Iowa

We deliver anywhere in Iowa and most of the surrounding states. In the Des Moines metro, Ankeny, Ames, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Waterloo we send our own install crew. They anchor the columns, wire the power unit, run hydraulic lines, cycle-test the lift under load, and walk you through operation before they leave. For rural addresses further out we quote install case-by-case or send freight only.

Freight-only delivery is the cheapest route. We drop the crated lift on your driveway and you handle assembly, which most mechanically-inclined buyers can knock out in a weekend with a helper. A few buyers pick up directly from us in Ames to save on delivery entirely. That is fine, just call ahead so we can have the crate palletized. Whichever route you pick, we back the equipment with parts and phone support for the life of the lift.

Brands and how to get a quote

For home and hobbyist buyers we lean on BendPak and Atlas. Both build honest four-post storage lifts with real service networks behind them, both come with strong structural warranties, and both are backed by parts we can ship next-day out of Ames. If you are outfitting a small independent shop with commercial daily-use expectations we quote a heavier Rotary or Challenger four-post instead and price the install accordingly.
