A grain-and-cattle operation in eastern Nebraska called us in the middle of harvest about a 2 post car lift for their shop building. They weren’t shopping for a service bay. They wanted to stop rotating tires on jack stands, get wheels off pickups and the farm truck fast, and do it without hauling everything forty minutes to town. Fair goals. What they hadn’t looked at yet was the paperwork side: what the warranty actually covers, how long parts take to reach a rural address, and who pays labor if a cylinder weeps at month fourteen. That’s the part nobody puts on a spec sheet, so we built this checklist to cover both.

Item One: Confirm the Building Before the Model

Farm shops are usually generous on ceiling height and stingy on something else. The pole buildings we work in across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa often run 14 to 16 feet to the truss, which means an overhead clear-floor configuration is wide open and you never have to think about a floor channel again. What bites people is column spacing versus the door opening and the equipment traffic pattern. If a combine head or a skid loader comes through that bay in spring, you need the drive-thru clear and you need to know the columns won’t get clipped by a wide implement.

The other building item is the slab. Farm shop concrete varies wildly, from a six-to-eight-inch reinforced pour that will outlast the building to a four-inch slab poured in sections with no rebar. Manufacturers spec a minimum thickness and PSI for anchoring, and a two-post design puts real bending load into those anchors when a truck is up in the air. Drill a test hole and measure. Check for a vapor barrier and any in-floor heat tubing, because hitting PEX with a rotary hammer ruins your whole month. Also note where control joints run. Column bases need clear distance from joints and slab edges, and in a big shop you usually have room to shift the layout a couple of feet to land on solid concrete instead of fighting a joint.

Item Two: Size Capacity to the Real Fleet

Ask what actually gets lifted, not what could theoretically get lifted. On most farms the honest answer is half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups, a car or two, maybe a service truck. That puts you in the 10,000 pound class comfortably. Where operations get tripped up is the one-ton dually with a flatbed and a welder on it, or a loaded service body, because curb weight climbs fast and the arms have to reach frame points on a longer wheelbase.

If duallys and long-wheelbase trucks are part of the picture, look at 12,000 or 15,000 pound capacity and pay attention to two specs beyond the number on the label: maximum lifting height and arm reach. A tall truck on a two-post with short arms means you’re reaching past the running boards to find a lift point, and that’s how people end up setting a pad on a rocker panel. Extension adapters and drop-end arms solve most of it, but they should be spec’d at purchase rather than bought later. We also remind farm customers that the lift is only as good as the point you set the pad on. Frame-on-body trucks are easy. Unibody cars need the pinch weld or a designated pad, and a hardened rubber pad that’s been sitting in a cold shop for ten winters grips a lot worse than a fresh one. Pads are cheap. Bodywork isn’t.

Item Three: Tire Rotation and Wheel Work Specifics

Wheel work is the single most common reason a farm shop buys a two-post, and it’s a use case with its own requirements. You want the wheels hanging free, which two-post gives you naturally, and you want enough height that you’re spinning lug nuts standing up rather than crouched. You also want to think about where the tires go once they’re off. A rack or a low table near the bay beats stacking them behind you where somebody trips on them.

Two practical add-ons matter here. First, an air line at the columns. Most quality two-post units offer an optional air-line kit that runs shop air up the column so you can plug an impact in at working height instead of dragging a hose from the wall and having it snag on the carriage. Second, consider whether you’ll be balancing and mounting in the same building. A two-post handles the removal side beautifully but doesn’t touch mounting or balancing, and plenty of farm operations pair a lift with a tire changer and balancer. If you’re rotating for a mixed fleet with different lug patterns and torque specs, get a torque wrench that reads in the range you actually need and use it. Over-torqued lugs on aluminum wheels create a warped rotor complaint that gets blamed on the brake job every time.

Item Four: Read the Warranty Line by Line

Every two-post lift sells with a warranty, and almost nobody reads it until something breaks. Here’s what to look for. Warranties on this equipment are usually tiered: a longer term on the structure — columns, carriages, arms, weldments — and shorter terms on the hydraulic and electrical components. Five years on structure and one to two years on the power unit, cylinders, and cables is a common shape. What matters more than the number of years is a single question: does the warranty cover parts only, or parts and labor?

Parts-only is the norm on residential and light-commercial equipment, and it’s the source of most disappointment. If a cylinder seal fails at fourteen months, a parts-only warranty gets you a new cylinder in a box and leaves you with the bill for the tech, the travel, and the fluid. For a rural eastern Nebraska address, that travel line can be substantial. Also check the exclusions: wear items like pads, cables, and lock dogs are frequently excluded or covered for a short window, and damage from improper anchoring, wrong voltage, or overloading voids coverage fast. Finally, check whether the warranty requires the unit to be installed by an authorized installer or requires documented startup and commissioning. Some manufacturers do, and a homeowner-style self-install on a commercial farm shop can quietly forfeit coverage on the exact components you’d want covered.

Item Five: How a Claim Actually Gets Handled

Warranty language tells you what’s covered. Workflow tells you how long you’ll be down. When a customer calls us with a failure, the first thing we ask for is the serial number off the column data tag and the purchase date. Then we want a description that separates symptom from guess. “The motor runs, there’s fluid in the reservoir, nothing’s leaking, and it won’t rise” is a genuinely useful description — that’s a real call we took on a Challenger unit — and it points toward air in the system, a stuck lowering valve, or a bad pump cartridge rather than a structural issue. Photos of the power unit label and the fluid level speed things up more than people expect.

From there the distributor files with the manufacturer, gets a claim or RMA number, and parts ship. Realistic timelines: common wear parts often ship same or next day from stock, while a cylinder or a power unit assembly can be several days to a couple of weeks depending on availability. That’s the argument for buying a brand with a deep domestic parts network instead of an import brand whose supply chain runs through one container at a time. Keep your own file, too: the invoice, the serial number, the anchor torque values, and the date of startup. When we can produce documentation, claims go through. When nobody can prove when the unit was installed or whether it was anchored to spec, they stall. Item Six: Delivery, Rigging, and Getting It Standing

This is the checklist item rural buyers underestimate. A two-post ships on a pallet by LTL freight, and the columns are heavy — several hundred pounds each. Freight carriers deliver curbside, and “curbside” on a gravel section road is whatever the driver decides it is. If you have a tractor with forks, a telehandler, or a skid loader with pallet forks, you’re set; most farms do, and that’s a real advantage over a suburban garage buyer. Tell us up front and we’ll note it on the bill of lading so the carrier doesn’t send a truck with a liftgate you’re paying for and don’t need.

Inspect the shipment before you sign. Note any bent packaging, missing cartons, or crushed corners on the delivery receipt, because concealed damage claims filed after a clean signature are an uphill fight. Then plan the standing. Columns get set, plumbed with shims, anchored with the specified bolts, and torqued in stages. Cables and hoses get routed, the cylinders get bled, and the equalization system gets adjusted so both carriages arrive at the same height. Cycle it several times empty and listen for every lock to engage. A farm shop with the right iron on hand can absolutely do this in a day. Item Seven: The 2 Post Car Lift Budget Reality Check

Most farm shop buyers land somewhere between four and eight thousand dollars for the equipment depending on capacity and configuration, and then discover the line items nobody quoted them: electrical, possibly a concrete pad, freight to a rural address, and installation if they hire it. Budget for those and you’ll be happy. Ignore them and the project stalls with columns sitting in the shop wrapped in plastic through planting season, which we’ve seen more than once.

On power, most single-phase units want 208 to 230 volt service on a dedicated circuit near the power unit column. Plenty of shop buildings already have that for a welder or compressor, but check the amperage and the distance. If the building is three-phase, tell us before you order because the power unit is configured differently and it’s not a field swap you want to improvise. Then keep a small spares kit: a set of pads, a spare lock cable if the design uses one, and hydraulic fluid of the specified type. A 2 post car lift in a farm shop is a piece of production equipment, and the shops that treat it that way — annual inspection, cables checked, anchors re-torqued, pads replaced before they’re slick — get twenty years out of it.
