There is more myth than fact circulating in EV specialty shops about 2 post car lift cable wear, and we hear the same wrong ideas from owners in Marion, Iowa about once a month. The most common: EVs are lighter on the drivetrain so cables last longer. That is not how equalizer cables work. Another: you can eyeball a cable and know it’s good. Also wrong, because the failure mode is inside the strand, not on the surface. This article is a myth-busting piece for EV specialty shop owners who are doing more transmission-adjacent motor and reduction-gear work than they expected to be, and who need their 2 post car lift to last a decade.

Myth one — EVs are easy on a 2 post car lift so cables last longer

A Tesla Model Y is not lighter than a Toyota Camry. A Rivian R1T is not lighter than a Ford F-150. EV specialty shops that opened in the last three years often started with the assumption that their vehicles were easier on the equipment because there was no oil to change, no exhaust to drop. The lift gets used less, so it lasts longer. That assumption falls apart on cable wear the moment you run the numbers on actual cycles.

Equalizer cables don’t care about drivetrain type. They care about cycles, meaning how many times the lift goes up and down, and about the load on the arms. An EV crossover with a battery pack is often 500 to 900 pounds heavier than the equivalent ICE vehicle, so each cycle puts more work into the cables. A Marion EV specialty shop we sold to two years ago was on their original cables and doing transmission-service work that had them lifting six to ten cars a day. They were surprised when we told them the cables needed inspection at year two, not year five like their neighbor’s oil-change shop.

Myth two — if the cable looks fine it is fine

This is the myth that gets shops in real trouble. A lifting cable fails from the inside out. The outer strands look fine, no fraying, no obvious kinks. Meanwhile, individual wires inside the strand are breaking, cracked from bend fatigue at the sheave, corroded from humidity, or worn where the cable rides against the pulley groove. When enough interior wires break, the cable snaps under load with no visible warning on the outside surface.

What you’re feeling for is broken wires that snag your glove, not looking for. If a cable feels rough where a month ago it felt smooth, it’s telling you something. And if the pulley grooves are worn to a knife edge, the cable is grinding itself apart on the sheave, which is a leading indicator that failure is coming even if the cable itself still passes a visual check.

What actually kills a lifting cable

Three things kill lifting cables in real-world shops. First, sheave wear. Once the pulley groove wears from a round bottom to a V, the cable rides on a knife edge and every trip up or down abrades individual wires. Second, corrosion, particularly in shops with poor humidity control or where the lift sits under a floor drain that occasionally splashes salt water in winter. Third, cycles, meaning sheer number of up-downs across the year.

The number that matters is cycles, not months. An EV specialty shop pulling a battery pack every couple of weeks and doing motor and reduction-gear work in between is cycling the lift far more than a traditional oil-change bay. That’s why we tell EV shops in Marion and the surrounding corridor to think of cable life in cycles: expect 5,000 to 8,000 clean cycles from an OEM cable, and start inspecting hard once you’re past 3,000. If you don’t track cycles, use hours-of-use as a proxy on a busy 2 post car lift running under load 30-plus hours a week.

Cable inspection interval by hours of use, not by calendar

The manufacturer’s calendar interval — inspect annually, replace at five years — assumes light-to-moderate residential use. That’s fine for a hobbyist. It is not fine for an EV specialty shop turning transmissions and motors five days a week. We tell shops to move to an hours-based schedule. If the lift runs under load 20 or more hours a week, do a hands-on cable inspection quarterly, not annually, and be honest with yourself about what you find during that check.

The inspection itself takes fifteen minutes and doesn’t need special tools. Wear a heavy glove, run your hand along the cable at the safety-stop position where the load bends the cable hardest, and check both sides at the sheaves. Also check the pulley grooves for wear and for any pinch-point where the cable jumped a groove, which is a fast way to nick the outer strands. A 2 post car lift is a piece of critical safety equipment, not a floor jack, so treat cable inspection like brake inspection, not like a tire kick.

Signs your cable is close to failure

Sound changes first. A cable that used to run silent will start to click or pop at a specific height, usually where the sheave is worn or where broken inner wires are catching. Second sign: the lift begins to hesitate under load, meaning one column reaches the top a beat behind the other, or the arms sag slightly under a heavy vehicle. Third: visible outer-strand fraying, which by the time it shows up on the outside means you’re already past the safe window and need to stop using the lift immediately that shift.

None of these signs mean you can wait until next month. If a cable is telling you it’s tired, take the lift out of service, order a replacement pair, and put the machine down until the new cables are in and tensioned. We’ve had exactly one EV shop in the state try to run a lift on a suspect cable for one more week while parts shipped, and they were lucky the failure happened after hours with no one under the vehicle. Replacement timing and why we do both cables together

When one cable is worn out, the other is too. Cables that run in pairs share cycles, share load, and typically share age. Replacing one and leaving the other is the same math as replacing one tire out of a matched set of four; you’re going to be back doing the other one sooner than you think, and you’ve paid two service calls instead of one. On a 2 post car lift, replacing both cables at once is a two-hour job for an experienced tech and costs less than a set of brake rotors.

Along with cables, we replace the sheaves if the grooves are worn beyond spec. A fresh cable on a knife-edge pulley is worn out in six months. It’s the same reason you resurface rotors when you do pads, meaning fresh consumable, matched groove. How Marion EV shops end up with cable trouble sooner than they expect
