The most expensive myth about a 2 post car lift is that the cables hold the car up. They do not, and an EV specialty shop in Davenport found that out the hard way when a snapped equalization cable dropped one column six inches while a crossover sat in the air with its oil pan gasket half done. Nobody was hurt. The safety locks caught it exactly the way they are designed to. But the owner had been running those cables for nine years without a single inspection because he assumed the mechanical locks made cable condition a non-issue. That call kicked off a long conversation about what these hoists actually need, and this article is the honest version of it.

Myth One: The Cables Are What Hold the Vehicle

On a hydraulic two-post hoist, the cylinders raise the carriages and the safety locks hold them. The cables are equalization cables — their job is to keep the two carriages traveling at the same height so the car does not tip. On some designs there is a single cylinder driving one side with the cable system transferring motion to the other. Either way, cables are a synchronization system, not a load-bearing suspension system, and understanding that changes how you think about failure.

It also explains why a cable failure feels so violent. When one lets go, the affected carriage drops until it finds the next lock position. That might be a couple inches or it might be most of a foot, and the vehicle tilts on the way down. Parts fall. Trans jacks tip. Anyone underneath is in genuine danger. So while it is technically true that a cable is not what is holding the car, it is completely false that cable condition does not matter. The correct framing is: the locks are your last line of defense and you should never be relying on them. Cables in good order mean the locks never get tested.

Myth Two: Cables Are a “Replace When Broken” Item

This is the one that gets shops in trouble. Steel cable degrades in predictable ways — broken individual wires, corrosion at the sheave contact points, flat spots, birdcaging near the fittings, and stretch that shows up as the two sides drifting out of sync. Every one of those is visible weeks or months before failure if someone actually looks. The Davenport shop’s cable had been fraying at a sheave for a long time; nobody had a flashlight on it.

Our practical intervals: visual inspection monthly by whoever uses the hoist, a real hands-on inspection at every annual service, and replacement at the manufacturer’s stated interval regardless of appearance. Most makers put that in the three-to-five-year window for daily commercial duty. A home garage running a handful of lifts per month can reasonably stretch further, but ten years on original cables is gambling. Replace them in pairs — never one side — because a fresh cable paired with a stretched one just puts uneven load on the new one. Myth Three: Any 2 Post Car Lift Handles an EV the Same as a Gas Car

Electric vehicles broke a lot of habits. The battery pack sits in the floor, spanning most of the wheelbase, and the manufacturer lift points are specific and non-negotiable. Set an arm pad on a pinch weld an inch off spec and you can crush a pack seam. That is not a body repair, that is a five-figure battery event. Every EV service manual publishes lift point diagrams, and shops that work on them regularly should have those printed and posted at the bay.

Weight is the second factor. A midsize electric crossover can run 5,000 to 6,000 pounds, and a full-size electric pickup pushes past 8,000. A 9,000 lb hoist that was generous for a shop’s gas-car mix ten years ago is suddenly tight. We push EV-focused shops toward 12,000 or 15,000 lb capacity with tall columns, because the weight distribution is different too — EVs carry more mass low and centered, which changes how the arms load. Adapter height matters as well; many EVs sit low and need the drop-end arms or low-profile pad stacks to get under them at all without ramping.

Myth Four: You Cannot Do Oil Pan Work on a Two-Post

We hear this from techs who have gotten used to drive-on racks, and it is backwards. Oil pan gasket work is exactly where a two-post shines, because the arms are out at the pinch welds and the entire underside of the engine is open. On a four-post, the runways and the crossmember hardware sit right where you need to swing a pan down, and you end up working around obstacles all afternoon. On a two-post the space is simply there.

The real constraint is arm placement, not the hoist type. Front arms set too far rearward on a transverse-engine car can block the pan rails. Three-stage front arms solve most of this — collapse them for a short front overhang, extend them for a long one, and place the pads at the factory points rather than wherever they happen to reach. The other trick is column spacing: a wider drive-thru gives you room to get a pan out sideways instead of straight down. If a shop’s steady work is engine-down services, that is worth specifying at purchase rather than discovering later. This is one of the areas where taking an extra thirty seconds on arm setup saves an hour on the job.

Myth Five: Hydraulic Fluid Is Hydraulic Fluid

We get a version of this call constantly: the motor runs, the reservoir has fluid, and the carriages will not move. Sometimes it is a failed pump, sometimes a stuck check valve, and a surprising amount of the time it is the wrong fluid or fluid that has been in there since the Bush administration. Most two-post power units want ISO 32 hydraulic oil, or in some cases automatic transmission fluid — the manufacturer specifies which and they are not interchangeable at will. Motor oil is never right, and we have pulled it out of more reservoirs than we should have.

Old fluid absorbs moisture, and moisture means internal corrosion and sludged valves. Change it on a schedule — every couple of years for a working shop, less often for a low-cycle home unit, but never “when it looks dirty,” because by then the damage is upstream. While you are in there, check the reservoir level with the carriages fully down, not up, or you will overfill and blow the vent cap the first time you lower the hoist. Small habit, common mistake. Myth Six: Skipping Annual Service Saves Money

An annual inspection on a 2 post car lift takes an experienced tech an hour or two and covers anchor torque, lock function, cable condition and tension, arm restraint engagement, hose and fitting condition, fluid level, and column plumb. It is not expensive relative to what a shop bills in that same hour. What it prevents is the failure that takes a bay out of service for a week while we source a part for a hoist that has been discontinued for fifteen years.

Anchor torque alone justifies the visit. Wedge anchors relax over time, especially in slabs that see freeze-thaw movement the way Iowa floors do, and a column that is a quarter inch out of plumb loads the carriage bearings unevenly and wears the slider blocks fast. We check torque on every service call and we tighten something on most of them. If you have never had your equipment inspected — and plenty of the Davenport-area shops we visit have not, sometimes for a decade — that is the single highest-value hour you can buy. What to Do Monday Morning

Take a flashlight to your hoist before you put a car on it. Look at both cables end to end, especially where they pass over sheaves and where they terminate at the fittings. Run it up empty and listen — grinding, hesitation, or one side leading the other by more than a fraction of an inch all mean something. Cycle the locks and confirm both sides click into the same position. Check the fluid with the arms on the ground. Look at the anchor bolts for rust streaks or gaps at the base plate, which are tells that something has moved.

That is a ten-minute routine and it catches most of what kills a 2 post car lift. If anything looks off, stop using it and call somebody.
