The used option on the table was an early-2000s asymmetric clearfloor unit, 9,000 lb rated, pulled out of a closing independent garage about ninety minutes away. Columns were straight, the power unit ran, and the seller wanted a price in the low four figures. On paper that’s attractive for a fleet doing brake work on vehicles that top out around 6,000 lb curb weight. Asymmetric arms and rotated columns give you better door clearance, which matters when a tech is in and out of a cab twenty times a day chasing a caliper bolt.
Here’s the honest reckoning we walked them through. Anything of that age needs, at minimum, new equalization cables, cam springs, arm restraint gears, and a cylinder seal kit. Add new anchors, fresh fluid, replacement decals to satisfy an inspection, and pad adapters sized for their trucks. That parts list came to roughly a third again of the purchase price. Then add removal, transport, and install labor, and the rebuilt used route landed at around 60 to 65 percent of new. Real savings — but not the 50-plus percent the sticker suggested. The other thing you inherit is unknown history: how many cycles, whether it was ever overloaded, whether the anchor holes in the old slab were ever re-drilled. We can inspect for damage. We can’t inspect for abuse that hasn’t shown up yet.
Configuration B: A New 10,000 lb Symmetric Clearfloor
The new option was a 10,000 lb symmetric clearfloor two-post — the class of machine that includes the BendPak XPR-10S and comparable Rotary and Challenger models. Single-piece columns, expandable top beam for wide or narrow drive-thru, telescoping screw pads, padded overhead shutoff bar, drop-end arms for low pad height, and a single-point safety release. That feature list reads like marketing copy until you’ve spent a shift under one. Drop-end arms matter enormously for sedans with low rocker clearance, which describes half of this fleet.
Cost sat in the mid four figures for the unit before freight, anchors, and install. The fleet had a forklift on site, which trimmed the unloading line item to nearly nothing — worth mentioning because a lot of callers don’t realize offload equipment is a real cost when they don’t have it. What you’re buying beyond the steel is a warranty, current ALI certification, a full set of legible labels, and zero guesswork about cycle history. For a business where the lift being down means a truck doesn’t run a route, that predictability has cash value. We’ve watched shops lose more revenue to three days of downtime than the entire price gap between used and new. How Brake Work Specifically Changes the Math
Brake service is a two-post job. You want the wheels hanging free, unobstructed access to all four corners, and nothing under the vehicle competing with your air hose. That’s the main reason we didn’t try to talk this operator into a different style of equipment even though a four-post would have given them storage capability too.
What brake work does demand from a two-post is arm versatility and pad height. You’re setting pads on pinch welds or frame rails on a half-ton one hour and a low sedan the next. Telescoping arms with drop-end capability handle that spread without a stack of blocks. Screw pads with real adjustment range let you level a pickup with a lift kit and still reach under a car with four inches of rocker clearance. On the used unit we evaluated, the original pads were worn short and the arms didn’t telescope as far as current designs — solvable with new adapters, but another line item. The takeaway: for high-frequency brake service, arm geometry and adapter range matter more than raw capacity. A 9,000 lb rating is plenty for a 6,000 lb truck. Poor pad reach is what actually slows a tech down.
Site Constraints Decide More Than Budget Does
Before either configuration made sense, we needed three measurements, and we ask every caller for the same three. Ceiling height: the Ames fleet shop had a hair over 12 feet, which clears a standard clearfloor overhead beam but not by much. Slab thickness: they believed four inches, and we verified before drilling because “about four, maybe less” is a phrase we hear a lot and it’s the difference between a safe anchor and a pullout. Heaviest vehicle: under three tons, which sets capacity.
Those three numbers eliminate options fast. If the ceiling had come in under 12 feet, we’d have moved the conversation to a baseplate design, where the crossover runs at the floor and there’s no overhead beam to duck. If the slab had tested thin, we’d be talking about cutting and pouring footing pads before any lift arrived — a real cost that people rarely have in their budget and one that can swing a used-versus-new decision entirely. We’ve also had callers with a loft on one side and a wall on the other, which restricts column placement and sometimes rules out a two-post at that bay. Measure first. The Used vs New Decision Framework We Actually Use
Here’s the framework, stripped down. Buy used when: you can physically inspect the columns for bends and weld cracks, you know the model well enough that parts are still available, you’re budgeting the rebuild parts list into the purchase price up front, and downtime isn’t catastrophic to your revenue. Buy new when: the equipment is production-critical, you need warranty coverage, your insurer or a customer contract wants current certification, or the used units available to you are older than the parts supply chain supports.
The disqualifier we watch for on any used 2 post car lift is parts orphaning. If a manufacturer is gone and nobody makes a cam assembly or a matching cable set for those columns, the machine is scrap the day a part fails, no matter how good it looks today. Rotary and Challenger units from the 1990s onward generally still have a parts path. Some off-brand imports from the same era don’t.
