A European-marque specialty shop in the Quad Cities called us last winter about a 2 post car lift that “wouldn’t hold” a customer’s Porsche through the storage season. The owner was convinced the hydraulics were bleeding down overnight. They weren’t. What was actually happening was simpler and more common than most people expect: the safety cams had never fully engaged on one column, the arm restraints on the left front arm were worn round, and the vehicle was resting on hydraulic pressure instead of steel. We drive that stretch of I-80 to Davenport and Bettendorf constantly, and we see the same handful of misunderstandings in shop after shop. This article breaks down what arm restraints and safety cams actually do, what they don’t do, and where the myths come from.

Myth #1: The Hydraulics Are What Hold the Car Up

This is the single most persistent misconception we run into, and it explains most of the panicked phone calls we get from Quad Cities shops. Hydraulic pressure raises the carriages. Steel holds them there. Every properly designed two-post has a mechanical locking system — spring-loaded safety cams, dogs, or latches depending on the manufacturer — that ratchets into a ladder of slots welded inside each column. When you hear that satisfying series of clicks on the way up, that’s the cams passing lock positions. The job of the operator is to raise the vehicle past a lock position, then lower onto it until you hear both sides seat.

The shop we mentioned had been raising the car to working height and stopping there, mid-slot, with the whole weight of a 3,600 lb sports car sitting on a column of fluid and a power unit check valve. Any weep past that check valve, any air in the system, and the carriage creeps. That isn’t a defect — it’s physics. Once we showed the tech how to lower onto the locks and listen for the double engagement, the “bleed-down” complaint disappeared entirely. If you own a 2 post car lift and you’ve never deliberately set it down on its cams, you have been trusting the wrong component for years. That habit is worth breaking today, no parts required.

Myth #2: Arm Restraints Keep the Car From Falling

Arm restraints are not load-bearing. We repeat that in almost every service call because the name implies more than the hardware does. A restraint — typically a gear-and-pin assembly at the arm pivot, or a sliding pin on older Rotary and Challenger models — exists to stop the swing arm from rotating out from under the vehicle once weight is applied. It resists lateral rotation. It does not carry vertical load, and it will not save a vehicle that was set on the wrong pickup points.

Why it matters so much for European marques specifically: many of them have pinch-weld lift points that are narrow, plastic-shrouded, and unforgiving. On an Audi or a BMW with the wrong adapter, the pad can walk a quarter inch as the suspension unloads, and if the restraint gear teeth are rounded off, the arm follows it. We pulled a set of restraints off a mid-90s two-post in the Quad Cities where every tooth had been worn to a smooth arc — the arms swung freely under load. The shop had been compensating by “chocking” arms with a floor jack. That’s not a fix. Replacement restraint gears and pins are inexpensive relative to a bodywork claim, and on most Rotary and Challenger columns the swap is a shop-hour job with the lift down and the arms unloaded.

Myth #3: A Baseplate Lift Is Less Safe Than an Overhead

We hear this from shop owners who’ve only ever worked under a clearfloor overhead model. It isn’t true, and for seasonal storage work it’s often backwards. Baseplate designs route the equalization cable and hydraulic hose through a low crossover plate at the floor instead of an overhead beam. That means no height restriction at the top, which is exactly what you want when a low ceiling is the constraint — we’ve done plenty of installs in older Davenport and Moline buildings where the usable ceiling was under 12 feet.

The tradeoff is a small ramp over the floor plate and slightly more exposure of the crossover components to shop debris. Neither affects the mechanical lock system, which lives in the columns regardless of configuration. What genuinely does affect safety on either style is concrete. We ask about slab thickness on every quote for a good reason: 4 inches of properly cured concrete at the right PSI is a typical minimum for a 9,000 to 10,000 lb unit, and we’ve turned up sites where the pour measured closer to three. When a caller tells us they think they have five inches “but maybe less,” we core-test or we specify a footing pad. Anchors pulling out of thin slab is a real failure mode. Overhead versus baseplate is not.

Myth #4: Storage Duty Is Easy Duty on a 2 Post Car Lift

A European specialty shop that stores customer cars from November through April puts a very specific stress profile on its equipment, and it’s not the one people assume. The lift barely cycles — up in the fall, down in the spring. That sounds gentle. In practice, low cycle counts are how problems hide. Cylinder seals dry out. Cables sit under static tension in one position and take a set. Cams sit in one slot for five months, collecting dust in the pivot, and the return spring loses snap. Then somebody drops the lift in April and one side unlocks a beat behind the other.

Our advice for storage-duty owners is unglamorous: cycle the equipment through its full travel at least monthly even with nothing on it, and listen. Both columns should click in unison. Both cams should release together when you pull the handle. If one lags, that’s your signal — usually a stretched or dry cable, sometimes a bent cam rod. We also want the equalization cables inspected before any vehicle sits on a 2 post car lift for months at a time, because a broken strand under static load doesn’t announce itself. Add a locking pin or a set of jack stands if a car will hang for an entire season. Redundancy costs almost nothing and covers the scenario nobody plans for.

Myth #5: If It Lifts, It Passes Inspection

Functional and compliant are different words. ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards and the ALI/SM inspection program cover a list of items that have nothing to do with whether the carriage goes up: legible capacity and instruction labels, an operational overhead shutoff bar on clearfloor models, correct anchor bolt count and torque, cable condition, arm restraint engagement in every arm position, and a functioning single-point safety release that actually releases both sides.

The Challenger unit we were called out to in a nearby Iowa shop is a good example. Motor ran, fluid was full, no leaks — and it would not lift. The failure was the release mechanism holding the cams partially engaged, so the carriages fought the locks the entire way up until the power unit gave up. The owner had assumed a pump problem and had already priced a replacement power unit. What he needed was a cable adjustment and two new cam springs. That’s the pattern with two-post service: symptoms point at the expensive component and the cause is almost always in the lock and cable system. An annual inspection catches this before it costs you a day of downtime. If your last documented inspection is a memory rather than a piece of paper, start there.

What Actually Wears Out, and What It Costs to Fix

Across the Quad Cities, eastern Iowa, and western Illinois, the parts we ship most often for two-post units are a short list. Equalization cables lead it — they stretch, fray at the sheave, and eventually snap. Cam springs and lock rods are next, followed by arm restraint gears and pins, pad adapters, cylinder seal kits, and sheave bushings. Power units and cylinders come up far less often than people expect, and when they do it’s usually contamination from fluid that never got changed.

Budget-wise, cable and lock hardware sits comfortably in the low hundreds for most models, seal kits and adapters in a similar band, and a full power unit replacement is the one item that climbs into four figures. That ratio is why we push inspection so hard: the cheap parts are the safety-critical parts.
