That was the story with an overland builder outside Cedar Falls who called us last spring: he had a solid-axle swap half finished, a rear main seal weeping, and a pan gasket he’d already crawled under twice on ramps and jack stands. He wanted full underbody access, wheels hanging free, and enough room to swing a torque wrench without lying in gravel. Why an oil pan job pushes builders toward two posts

Oil pan gasket work is unforgiving of bad access. On most modern trucks and SUVs the pan is boxed in by a crossmember, the steering rack, and an exhaust crossover, and half the fastener heads are pointed straight up into a space you can only reach with your shoulder jammed against a frame rail. On ramps you get maybe fourteen inches of clearance and no way to get your torso under the engine. On a two-post you get the vehicle at chest height with nothing under it at all — no jack stands to work around, no cribbing, no drive-on runways blocking your view of the pan rail. That single difference turns a miserable weekend into an afternoon.

The Cedar Falls customer also wanted the wheels free. Overland builds live and die by suspension geometry, and he was cycling a new set of long-travel coilovers while the drivetrain was open. A four-post keeps the tires loaded on runways, which is fine for storage and alignment but useless when you need to drop a knuckle or unload a spring. That’s the honest dividing line we give people: if your work is mostly suspension, brakes, driveline, and engine-from-below, the two-post wins. If it’s mostly storage and detailing, look at a four-post instead. He was clearly in the first camp, so we stopped talking runways and started measuring his slab.

What we found in the Cedar Falls shop before we drilled

The building was a 30×40 pole barn with a 12-foot ceiling at the truss bottom and a slab poured in two stages years apart. That last detail matters more than most people expect. We cored two test holes and got 4.75 inches on the older half and just over 6 on the newer pour, both on decent compacted base. The ceiling ruled out an overhead-beam model. With a 12-foot truss bottom and a 4Runner on 35s, the overhead crossbar would have been the thing that stopped the lift, not the hydraulics. So we went baseplate — floorplate crossover, columns tied together at the bottom, nothing above the vehicle. That’s the same call we make in a lot of Iowa outbuildings, and it’s worth knowing before you fall in love with a clear-floor model online. We set the columns for a drive-thru width that still let him walk past the driver’s door with the arms retracted, then squared everything to the door opening rather than to the wall, because the wall wasn’t square to anything. Anchors went in with a rotary hammer, torqued to spec, and we shimmed both columns plumb before the first test cycle.

Sizing the lift: capacity, arms, and lifted-truck reality

His heaviest vehicle was a 6,200 lb built 4Runner with armor, a rear bumper, and a full drawer system. A 9,000 or 10,000 lb capacity covers that with a healthy margin, and we almost always steer home and hobby customers to 10,000 rather than 9,000 — the price gap is small and the resale is better. Capacity isn’t the whole story though. On a lifted vehicle the pickup points sit high, so we care about arm reach and pad stack height. Telescoping arms with three-stage front reach and screw-up pads with stackable adapters let him hit factory frame points on the 4Runner and still reach the pinch welds on his wife’s crossover without dragging out a milk crate of blocks.

Asymmetric versus symmetric came up too. Asymmetric rotates the columns and biases the vehicle rearward so you can open doors; symmetric centers the load and handles long-wheelbase trucks better. He works on a mix, so we set him up symmetric with an expandable top-of-column configuration. That’s a decision that gets made once and lived with for fifteen years, which is why we’d rather have the conversation on the phone than let someone guess from a product page. Hydraulic cylinder seals: the part that decides the lift’s real lifespan

Every two-post has one or two hydraulic cylinders doing all the work, and the cylinder is where most old lifts die. The failure pattern is predictable: the rod seal starts weeping, someone tops off the reservoir instead of investigating, the piston seal follows, and then the lift settles under load overnight. That’s the point where the owner calls us and says “it won’t hold.” On a 2 post car lift the cylinder rarely needs replacing outright — what it needs is a proper reseal with the right rod seal, piston seal, wiper, and O-rings for that specific bore and rod diameter.

A seal that’s the right nominal size but wrong durometer or wrong profile will hold for a month and then chew itself apart, and now you’ve drained the system twice. We also pull cylinders and inspect the rod for pitting while we’re in there, because a scored rod will destroy a fresh seal in a week no matter how good the kit is. If the rod is bad, replacement is the honest answer and we’ll say so. Rebuild versus replace: how we run that math

People assume we push new equipment. Often we don’t. A well-built older lift with straight columns, good welds, and a legible data tag is worth reselling — a reseal kit, a set of cables, new arm pads, and a fresh power unit typically lands in the low four figures installed, versus a mid-four-figure to five-figure range for new depending on capacity and configuration. If the structure is sound, rebuilding is usually the better dollar.

What kills the rebuild case is structure. Cracked column welds at the carriage tracks, elongated anchor holes, a bent overhead beam, or a missing data plate all move us to “replace.” We won’t recertify a lift we can’t identify, because the safety devices and the load path have to match documented specs. Same with rust-through at the column base, which we see on lifts that lived in unheated Iowa buildings with a leaky roof for twenty years. We also look at whether the safety latch mechanism is complete on both columns and whether the equalizer cables are original. Cables stretch, fray at the sheave, and become a hard no. When we do rebuild, we photograph everything, torque-check every anchor, cycle the lift twenty times empty, then load-test it. That process is the same whether we’re refreshing a 1990s unit or commissioning a brand-new one, and it’s how we sleep at night.

Maintenance habits that actually matter

The Cedar Falls owner asked for a maintenance list he’d actually follow, which we appreciated. Short version: check the fluid level monthly with the lift fully down, keep the columns’ inside tracks clean and lightly greased, wipe the cylinder rod after any dusty grinding work, and inspect the equalizer cables every few months for broken strands near the sheaves. Every anchor gets a torque check once a year. Every safety latch gets a listen — you should hear both columns clicking evenly on the way up.

Fluid choice matters more than most owners think. Use the manufacturer-specified hydraulic oil or a good AW-32 in cold shops; ATF works in a pinch but it’s harder on some seal compounds over years. If the lift sits in an unheated barn all winter, expect slow first cycles and don’t fight it — run it up and down empty a few times to warm the oil before loading it. And if you ever see the platform drift down more than a fraction of an inch over ten minutes under load, stop using it and call us.
