Step one — set your budget honestly (and what each tier buys)
The first honest question is how much you’re actually willing to spend on a 2 post car lift for a race operation. Budget tiers land in three brackets. The entry tier, meaning a basic 9,000 or 10,000-pound BendPak XPR or a small-shop Atlas, gets you into a working lift without breaking the bank. The middle tier is Rotary or Challenger commercial 10K asymmetric, which is where race teams typically land. The upper tier is Rotary heavy-duty 12K or 15K, where the frame plate is thicker and the columns are beefier for repeated heavy pulls.
For a race operation focused on oil-pan gasket work and other engine-adjacent service, the middle tier is almost always the right answer. The upper tier’s extra capacity isn’t earned by the light chassis you’re lifting. The entry tier’s cost savings gets eaten by shorter arm reach and thinner column steel. Step two — pick the vehicle you’ll lift most, not the biggest one
The vehicle you’ll lift most is not the biggest vehicle in the shop. It’s the one that comes up on the arms four times a week. For most race teams that’s the current race car, meaning a light chassis at 2,800 to 3,400 pounds, plus the tow vehicle when needed. Size the arm reach and lift height for the race car, not for the F-350 that hauls it to the track. If the tow vehicle only goes up twice a year, it can wait for a friend’s shop or a scissor.
Sizing for the daily lift means shorter arms with better pad geometry for the race car’s frame rails, which speeds up pad placement. Sizing for the tow vehicle means the arms are always in the wrong position when you start a job. That waste, meaning a minute here, two minutes there, adds up across a season, and race teams that count laps as time savings care about it. The right pad geometry is worth more than an extra thousand pounds of unused capacity every time.
Step three — symmetric or asymmetric for oil-pan work
For engine oil pan gasket work specifically, we recommend an asymmetric configuration. The car sits slightly rearward of center, which biases weight distribution toward the front axle, which is exactly what you want when you’re going to have the engine partly out and heavy tools between the frame rails. On a symmetric 2 post car lift the load is centered, which is fine for light service but starts to feel less balanced when you’ve got an engine hanging from a support fixture.
Asymmetric also puts the driver-side arm out of the way of the exhaust-side of the block, which matters when the tech is reaching in and out with a hot header still bolted to the manifold. That’s a small ergonomic gain per job, but for a race operation running the same procedure across three or four cars in a season, small gains compound. If you’re only going to lift one make and model on this lift, you can specify asymmetric with confidence. If you’ll be mixing race cars with the tow vehicle regularly, symmetric may still make sense.
Step four — cable overhead vs baseplate for pit space
Clear-floor 2 post car lift models put the equalizer cable overhead in a safety bar. Baseplate models run the cable through a floor plate that connects the two columns at the bottom. For race teams working in shared shop space where crew rolls tool carts, motor stands, and jack stands across the bay constantly, clear-floor is the better bet. Nothing on the floor to trip over, no plate to catch a caster wheel, and no lip to bounce a rolling motor stand over.
Baseplate has one advantage: lower ceiling requirement. If your shop is 10 feet tall or under, baseplate gets you into a full-height lift where clear-floor would force you into a low-ceiling model with reduced max lift height. Step five — brand choice and what it means for resale
Brand matters for resale. Rotary and Challenger commercial models hold their value best on the used market because there’s steady demand from working shops and the parts pipeline for older models is long. BendPak holds value well in the home and light-commercial segments. Atlas and other entry-tier brands hold less value because the second-owner market is thinner. If a race team is likely to upgrade in five to seven years, sticking to Rotary or Challenger 2 post car lift models pays back on the exit.
For a race operation specifically, Rotary has the edge in most markets because ALI-certified 10K and 12K models are the standard commercial reference, and every shop that’s ever bought a used one knows exactly what they’re getting. Challenger runs a close second and is often stronger regionally, especially in the Midwest. Step six — installation now or DIY (and how it affects value later)
A professionally installed lift sells better than a self-installed one, all other things being equal. Buyers on the secondary market look for original anchor drilling that’s clean and level, cable tensioning that matches the ALI cert-tag values, and safety systems that pass a chair test. DIY installs pass all those checks when the installer knew what they were doing, and fail them more often when the installer was learning as they went. The paper trail matters, so hang on to any receipts and inspection notes for the exit.

If you plan for resale from day one, meaning track cycles, keep annual inspection records, do the cable replacements on schedule, and keep the paint clean, the top end of that resale range is achievable. If you neglect all of those, the bottom end is where you’ll land. The math works out the same as any other capital purchase: the buyer knows what they’re getting, and the paper trail sells the lift almost more than the lift itself.
