A restoration shop owner outside Sioux City called us last spring about a 2 post car lift he had bought used at an auction, and the conversation went the way those conversations usually go. He had saved a couple thousand dollars up front, then spent most of it on replacement cables, a rebuilt power unit, and a set of arm pads that nobody stocked anymore because the manufacturer had been out of business since 2009. He wanted to know what he should have bought instead. That question — not “what’s cheapest today” but “what will this cost me over twenty years” — is the right one for anybody doing frame-off work, long exhaust fabrication, and driveline jobs where a car sits in the air for weeks at a stretch. Start With the Slab, Not the Brochure

Every decision tree for a restoration shop starts underground. Concrete is the single most common reason a project stalls after the equipment is already sitting on the shop floor in a crate. Most two-post columns need a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty of manufacturers now call for four and a quarter or four and a half inches on higher-capacity models. Older Sioux City shop buildings — especially the ones converted from ag or warehouse use in the 1960s and 70s — routinely have three and a half inches over gravel with no rebar, and sometimes a control joint running right where you wanted a column.

We had a customer in northwest Iowa who was certain his floor was six inches because that’s what the previous owner told him. We cored it. Three and three-quarter inches, and wet underneath. He ended up cutting two four-by-four-foot pads, pouring six inches of new mix, and waiting 28 days. That added cost, but it was a one-time cost, and it’s cheaper than what happens when an anchor pulls. Core-drill before you buy. If your slab is thin, budget for pads up front and treat that as part of the purchase price of the lift, not a surprise. A twenty-year ownership plan that ignores the foundation isn’t a plan.

Budget Tier One: What Under $4,000 Actually Buys

Nearly every week somebody tells us they’ve got about four thousand dollars set aside and they want a 9,000 or 10,000 lb column set delivered. That money is real and it buys a real machine — usually an entry-level baseplate model, often with a single-piece column, standard telescoping arms, and a warranty measured in months rather than years. For a hobbyist who lifts a Chevelle six times a year, that can be a perfectly rational buy. For a restoration shop billing hours under a car, it usually isn’t, and here’s why: duty cycle.

An entry-tier power unit is built for occasional use. Run it fifteen or twenty cycles a day and the pump, the solenoid, and the cable sheaves all age faster than the spec sheet suggests. Sheaves are the part people forget. Cheap sheaves with bushings instead of sealed bearings chew cables, and cables are a wear item you’ll replace two or three times over two decades regardless of brand. The difference is whether you’re replacing them every four years or every eight. Add in the fact that entry-tier importers change model lines frequently, and parts availability in year twelve becomes a coin flip. We stock parts for the major brands going back decades — that’s the actual dividing line between tiers.

Budget Tier Two and Three: Where Restoration Work Belongs

The mid-tier — think a Challenger or BendPak clearfloor two-post in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb range — is where most serious restoration shops should land. You get thicker column steel, better carriage bearings, sealed sheaves, a power unit rated for commercial duty, and a parts pipeline that will still exist in 2045. The upper tier, typically a Rotary SPO or SPOA-series column set, adds heavier gauge structure, superior arm geometry, and the longest service history in the industry. We still pull parts for units installed in Iowa shops in the 1980s that are on their original columns.

Amortize it. A mid-tier unit that lasts twenty-five years with two cable sets and one power unit rebuild costs less per year than a budget unit replaced twice. And there’s a line item nobody puts on a spreadsheet: downtime. When a restoration project is in the air and the lift won’t come down, you don’t just lose a repair bill — you lose the bay, the customer’s timeline, and sometimes the customer. A shop we work with near the Missouri River tracked it and figured a single week of a dead bay cost more than the price gap between the budget unit and the one he should have bought. That’s the twenty-year math.

Asymmetric or Symmetric for Frame-Off Work

Configuration is where restoration shops differ most from general repair. Symmetric columns face each other directly with equal-length arms and center the vehicle between the posts — great load balance, great stability with heavy or oddly proportioned vehicles, and full open access along the rocker for exhaust hangers and floor pan work. The tradeoff is door swing. On a long-door 1970s coupe you may not get the driver’s door open past the column, which matters if you’re constantly in and out of the interior.

Asymmetric columns rotate roughly thirty degrees and use unequal arm lengths, shifting the vehicle rearward so doors clear the posts. For a shop doing modern-body work that’s the obvious pick. For a restoration shop working on everything from a Model A to a dually pickup, we often recommend a versymmetric-style setup where the arms handle both patterns, or a symmetric column with a wider drive-thru so you keep the load capacity margin. Whichever you choose, think about how you actually approach a car: if driveline and exhaust access is the priority, arm reach and pad height range at the low end matter more than any spec on the front page of the brochure. Drop-end arms on a 2 post car lift make a low unibody restoration far less miserable.

Overhead vs Baseplate When the Ceiling Fights You

We get calls constantly from shops with an eleven or twelve-foot ceiling asking which style to run. A clearfloor overhead unit routes hydraulic lines and equalization cables through a top beam, keeping the floor between the posts totally clean — ideal when you’re rolling transmission jacks, engine stands, and welding carts around a chassis all day. It needs headroom, and the overhead beam also determines your maximum vehicle height at full lift, which matters if you ever put a van or a tall truck up.

Baseplate columns run everything through a low channel across the floor and need only enough ceiling for the columns plus the car. Under a low ceiling or under a loft, baseplate is often the only choice, and it’s a good choice — the floor plate is maybe an inch and a half tall and you get used to it. One customer near Grand Forks came to us with a 139-inch maximum height and no overhead option at all; baseplate was the answer and he’s been happy for years. For a restoration bay where you’re constantly dragging low creepers and dollies, we lean overhead if the building allows. When it doesn’t, don’t force it. Maintenance Costs Nobody Budgets For

Over twenty years, the consumables list on a two-post is short but non-negotiable. Equalization cables need inspection annually and replacement when you see broken strands, kinking, or corrosion — usually every six to ten years depending on humidity and duty. Arm pads and adapters wear and get lost. Lock latch pawls and their springs fatigue. Hydraulic fluid should be checked and topped, and changed when it looks milky or dark. The power unit motor brushes and the seal kit in the cylinder are the two mid-life rebuild items.

A Challenger owner called us once because his columns had a running motor, fluid in the reservoir, no visible leak, and no lift. That’s almost always a bypassed or stuck pressure relief, a failing pump coupler, or air in the system — not a dead lift. Ten minutes on the phone with a tech and a small part shipped saved him from buying a new machine. That’s the value of buying a brand that somebody in the Midwest actually services. Budget a modest annual figure for inspection and parts and roughly a mid-hundreds-to-low-thousands range once or twice in twenty years for cables and a power unit rebuild, and the total cost of ownership on a good 2 post car lift stays remarkably low. Installation, Inspection, and the Iowa Reality

Plenty of buyers tell us they don’t need install — they’ve got a forklift, a couple of guys, and a Saturday. Sometimes that’s true. A baseplate two-post in a clean bay with good concrete is a manageable DIY project if you’re methodical about plumb, anchor torque, and cable tension after the first few cycles. What goes wrong is anchor depth in marginal concrete, columns set out of plumb so the carriages bind, and cables never re-tensioned after the initial break-in, which throws the arms out of level and stresses the lock system.
