An RV and trailer restoration shop in southwest Iowa put a new 2 post car lift on the floor last year, and we spent the first year checking in with the owner as he worked through the machine’s early break-in, his first parts replacements, and the deeper conversation about brand history and parts pipelines that ultimately decided which lift he bought. Restoration shops are different from routine-service shops — the vehicles are older, the jobs are longer, and the parts pipeline for the shop’s own equipment matters more than the initial purchase price. Restoration realities that shape a 2 post car lift pick

A restoration shop sees vehicles that a routine-service shop rarely touches. Rust-perforated frames, missing floor pans, cut sheet metal from previous owner’s projects, mismatched hardware, and undocumented modifications that fight modern pad-placement diagrams. The 2 post car lift a restoration shop needs has to grab jacking points that may not exist in factory locations, hold a vehicle for weeks while paint cures and body panels get fabricated, and give the tech clear underside access for welding, metal work, and mechanical restoration all at once. That’s a different job description than an oil-change bay.

The southwest Iowa shop we’re describing had been working out of a 20-year-old scissor lift and a couple of engine hoists, doing full frame-off restorations on classic pickups and vintage travel trailers. The scissor was cratering their throughput on any job that needed extended underside time, because the scissor lifted the vehicle over its own platform and blocked wheel access. They came to us wanting a two-post that could hold a vehicle for days at working height without hydraulic drift. The candidate list narrowed to Rotary and Challenger commercial-grade equipment right away — the two brands with the seal quality and pump reliability to hold a vehicle overnight without settling. Off-brand imports and residential-grade lifts don’t offer that seal spec on their datasheets, and the ones that claim to don’t hold up in practice.

First-year story — install to first restoration job

Install day at the southwest Iowa shop went smoothly. Bay was 26 feet deep with a 14-foot ceiling in a rebuilt 1950s garage, slab was original but heavily reinforced with a 2018 topping pour and rebar, and the customer had a boom truck onsite from a friend’s excavation business for the column lift. Our crew set the columns, torqued the anchor kit, ran the electrical connection, cycled the lift empty three times to verify pump prime and pawl engagement, then did a supervised first lift on the shop’s own farm truck. Total time on site: four and a half hours.

The first actual restoration job on the new 2 post car lift was a 1969 Chevy C10 frame-off in progress from the previous shop configuration. The customer had transferred the truck body onto rolling stands and needed the frame lifted onto the arms to strip, weld, and repaint before setting the body back on. That’s not a job a factory install manual has an SOP for. Our team walked him through frame-only lifting — pad placement on the boxed frame rails at the front and rear crossmembers, arm-restraint verification with unusual load geometry, and the safety envelope for leaving the vehicle at working height overnight. He completed the strip and paint over three weeks, and the lift held position within a half-inch the whole time.

Brand history — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas

The brand conversation is the one that decides restoration-shop equipment for the next twenty years. Rotary Lift is the oldest continuous American two-post manufacturer, founded in Memphis in 1925 and still operating from its Madison, Indiana plant. Their SPO and SPOA product lines have shipped continuously since the 1980s, and every column in that family shares parts with columns from the 90s and 2000s. Challenger Lifts started in the 1980s, based in Kentucky, and their commercial two-post product line — the CL series — is the direct competitor to Rotary at the mid-commercial tier. Both brands are ALI-certified and both keep OEM parts stocked for their currently-shipping equipment.

BendPak is a California-based manufacturer that leans more residential and light-commercial. Their XPR series is a solid home-garage 2 post car lift and it has ALI listings on the top tier, but the residential lines don’t carry the same seal spec or cable-life expectations as Rotary or Challenger. Atlas Automotive Equipment sells a value-tier line that competes with BendPak on price and offers ALI-certified models in the mid-range. For a restoration shop keeping a lift for 25 years, brand history matters because the parts pipeline decides whether year 18 is a rebuild or a replacement. Rotary and Challenger both keep 20+ year parts availability; BendPak and Atlas keep roughly 10 to 15 years on their commercial equipment.

Parts pipeline — who has what on the shelf

Parts pipeline is where our conversation with the southwest Iowa customer got specific. We stock cables, cylinders, pumps, arm-restraint kits, and pad rubber for every model of Rotary and Challenger commercial 2 post car lift currently in production, plus most of the equipment those brands built in the last 15 years. Same-day shipping from Ames on stocked parts; two to four business days on manufacturer-direct fulfillment for less-common items like a specific cable-length combination or a color-matched column skin.

For a restoration shop, the parts that matter most over the first ten years are pad rubber (wears steady with steel-on-steel restoration lifting), arm-restraint teeth (wear if the tech skips the restraint-check step), and cable ends (wear on the sheave contact). Cylinders and pumps rarely fail in the first ten years on commercial equipment; when they do, it’s usually a seal issue that we can service in-place without replacing the whole cylinder. The southwest Iowa customer’s first-year parts spend was minimal, all on pad rubber. Year two projected spend based on his job volume is a small budget line including a spare arm-restraint kit. That’s a low number for a restoration operation, and it’s the number that off-brand equipment can’t quote because their pipeline dries up around year 5 to 8. Brand and pipeline together drive the 25-year math.

Working on a chopped project — pad placement for cut floors

Restoration work often means cut sheet metal, missing rockers, and factory jacking points that no longer exist as documented. The southwest Iowa shop had a 1972 Ford truck project midway through the year where the previous owner had cut all four rocker panels off for repair and the shop was replacing them with fabricated new sheet metal. Lifting that truck safely on a 2 post car lift required a different pad placement strategy than the manufacturer’s diagram, because the pinch-weld didn’t exist yet.

Our recommendation for cut-floor projects is to fabricate a frame-rail lift adapter from angle iron and bolt it into the frame rail at the factory jacking-point location, then seat the arm pad on the adapter rather than the missing rocker. The customer built these adapters in his own shop with about a half-hour of welding time per adapter. The arm pads sat on a fabricated flat plate welded to the adapter, and the load transferred through the frame rail rather than the missing rocker. It’s not a technique the install manual covers, but it’s a routine restoration-shop workaround and it keeps the lift within safe operating limits. Any restoration shop should have a set of these adapters fabricated and stored, along with a written pad-placement diagram for common project vehicles that don’t match factory jacking points. That’s a habit that saves cars.

Six months in — the first parts we replaced

Six months into the install, the southwest Iowa restoration shop had three small parts replacements on the machine and one adjustment. The three parts: two arm-pad rubber replacements on the rear pads (worn from repeated frame-rail lifting where steel-on-rubber contact is more aggressive than pinch-weld pad seating), and one arm-restraint tension spring. Total parts cost: a small handful of dollars including next-day shipping from our Ames warehouse. Total installation time: 25 minutes across all three parts.

The adjustment was cable-tension re-torque at the 6-month mark, which the customer did himself using the manufacturer’s checklist and a torque wrench. Both cables had loosened by about a quarter-turn since the 90-day recheck — normal for a lift that has settled into its working position. Six-month-in numbers like these are what a first-year owner should expect from a commercial 2 post car lift, and they’re a strong signal that the equipment is behaving as designed. The signals to worry about at six months are hydraulic drift more than a half-inch overnight, cable tension losing more than a full turn, or arm restraints not engaging on first swing. None of those showed up on this install. What did show up was a customer who was starting to run his shop faster because the equipment wasn’t fighting him. That’s the payoff.

What we tell restoration shops to buy

If you’re running a restoration shop, our recommendation is a Rotary SPOA10 or SPO12 commercial 2 post car lift with three-stage arms and heavy-duty screw pads, backed by an ALI certification and installed with a full anchor torque protocol. Skip residential-grade equipment. Skip off-brand imports. The math on a 25-year hold favors commercial-grade Rotary or Challenger by a wide margin, and the parts pipeline over that horizon is only reliable with one of those two brands. Budget for annual ALI inspection, quarterly self-inspection using the manufacturer checklist, and a modest yearly line for wear parts.

If your restoration mix includes classic trucks, vintage travel trailers, or older heavy vehicles, size up to 12,000 pounds capacity to give yourself margin on frame-rail lifting and unusual load geometries. That extra capacity costs a few hundred more on the initial purchase and effectively doubles the safety margin on every non-standard lift. For a shop that lifts vehicles for weeks at a time during restoration, the extra capacity pays back in confidence alone.
