A body shop foreman up in the Iowa Great Lakes region called us last spring because his tire bay had become the bottleneck in the whole building. Two collision stalls were humming along, but every wheel-off job — rotations, mount and balance, brake inspections on customer cars waiting for parts — was tying up a drive-on rack that nobody could work underneath. He wanted a 2 post car lift, he wanted wheels free and clear, and he wanted to know which brands would still have parts on a shelf a decade from now. That last question is the one most buyers skip, and it is the one that decides whether your lift is an asset or a paperweight in year twelve. Here is how we walked him through it.

Why wheel work pushes you toward two posts, not four

Tire and wheel service is the single clearest case for a frame-engaging lift. A four-post drive-on rack supports the vehicle by its tires, which is fantastic for storage and alignment but useless the moment you need a wheel off. You can add rolling jack bridges, and plenty of alignment shops do, but that is a second purchase, a second maintenance item, and a second thing that has to be positioned before every job. A two-post picks up under the pinch welds or frame rails and leaves all four corners hanging in open air. Rotations that took ten minutes on a drive-on rack take five.

The second advantage is footprint. A tire bay is usually the narrowest, most awkward space in the building — often a back corner with a loft on one side and a wall on the other, which is exactly what a customer in northern Missouri described to us last year. A two-post occupies two column pads and nothing else. Your tech can walk a full circle around the vehicle, roll a wheel balancer up beside it, and stage four tires on the floor without stepping over runways. For a shop where the tire stall doubles as a general service stall, that open floor is worth more than any spec on the data plate. It is also why we rarely recommend anything else for high-volume wheel work.

Brand history: who actually built these machines

Rotary Lift started in Memphis in 1925 with Peter Lunati’s hydraulic inground lift, and that lineage matters more than nostalgia. Rotary spent a century refining column mechanics, carriage design, and safety latch geometry, and the company’s two-post line — the SPO and SPOA families — has been in continuous production long enough that a lift installed in the 1990s can still be brought back to spec with factory parts. Challenger Lifts, out of Louisville, came up in the 1980s and built its reputation on straightforward, serviceable commercial machines. Their CL10 and CL12 series are workhorses in independent shops across the Midwest.

On the lighter-duty side, BendPak has been building lifts since the 1960s and dominates the home-garage and light-commercial space, with the XPR-10S clear-floor model being the one we quote most often for shops that want a real two-post without commercial pricing. Atlas fills a similar slot. What we tell buyers is this: brands with long production histories tend to keep part numbers stable, which means cables, cylinders, latch kits, and lock dogs remain orderable. Brands that appear, rebadge, and vanish leave you sourcing generic hardware and hoping the bore matches. When you buy a 2 post car lift, you are also buying into a parts pipeline, whether you think about it that way or not.

What the parts pipeline actually looks like in year ten

We stock and ship parts for every major lift brand, and the difference between a well-supported machine and an orphan is stark. On a Rotary or Challenger column, we can usually identify the correct equalizer cable set from a serial number and a couple of photos, pull it off the shelf, and have it moving the same week. Cylinders, sheaves, arm restraint gears, and power unit assemblies are the same story. That is the practical result of a manufacturer that has kept its engineering documentation and its dealer network intact for decades.

Compare that to the calls we get about house-brand lifts bought online from sellers who no longer exist. The customer has a column that will not raise, the motor runs, there is fluid in the reservoir, and nothing is leaking — a description we heard almost word for word from a shop with a Challenger two-post, except in that case we knew exactly which check valve and lowering solenoid to look at. On an unsupported machine, that same diagnosis turns into measuring bore diameters and cross-referencing catalogs. Sometimes we find a match; sometimes the honest answer is that replacing the lift costs less than chasing parts. A 2 post car lift from a brand with a real service network is cheaper over twenty years even when it costs more on day one.

Symmetric, asymmetric, and what your tire mix demands

Symmetric two-post lifts place the columns directly across from each other with equal-length arms, and the vehicle sits centered between them. That layout gives you maximum stability and is the right choice for trucks, vans, and anything long or heavy. The tradeoff is that the vehicle’s door openings land near the columns, so getting in and out is tight. For a dedicated tire bay where nobody needs to sit in the driver’s seat, that hardly matters.

Asymmetric designs rotate the columns roughly thirty degrees and use unequal arm lengths, pushing the vehicle rearward so the doors clear the posts. If your bay is also used for interior work, diagnostics, or anything where a tech is climbing in and out repeatedly, asymmetric earns its keep. Many current models — including several in the Rotary and Challenger lines — offer versatile arm configurations that let you set the machine up either way, which is the option we usually steer mixed-use shops toward. The foreman in the Great Lakes region ended up with an adjustable-arm commercial unit at 10,000 lb capacity, because his heaviest regular vehicle was a three-quarter-ton pickup well under that number and he did not want to pay for capacity he would never use. Sizing honestly is part of buying well.

Clear floor versus baseplate, decided by your ceiling

Clear-floor two-post lifts route hydraulic lines and equalizer cables through an overhead beam. Nothing crosses the floor, which is ideal for rolling toolboxes, tire machines, and floor jacks. The cost is height: you need roughly twelve feet of clear ceiling for most 10,000 lb overhead models, and more if you want to raise a tall van fully.

Baseplate models run everything through a channel at floor level, which lets them fit under ceilings as low as around eleven feet. We had a caller from North Dakota with a hard 139-inch height limit and a 6,000 lb heaviest vehicle — that is a baseplate application, full stop, and pretending otherwise just produces a machine that cannot reach useful working height. The downside is a low crossover ramp your rolling equipment has to clear. In a tire bay specifically, we weigh that carefully, because tire machines and balancers get moved constantly. If your ceiling allows it, clear floor is the better long-term choice. If it does not, a properly specified baseplate 2 post car lift beats a clear-floor unit you cannot raise. Measure to the lowest obstruction — a garage door track, a light fixture, a sprinkler head — not to the peak of the roof, because that lowest point is what actually limits you.

Concrete, anchoring, and the thing people get wrong

Every two-post lift transfers the entire vehicle load into two column pads, and those pads transfer it into your slab through anchor bolts. Manufacturer requirements typically start around four inches of 3,000 psi concrete, and most call for more under higher-capacity units. We hear “about five inches, but maybe less” more often than any other slab description, and that uncertainty is worth resolving before the truck shows up. Coring a small test hole or hiring an hour of scanning is cheap insurance.

Reinforcement matters too, and so does what is under the slab. A four-inch pour over compacted base with good aggregate can hold an anchor better than a six-inch pour over soft fill. Age helps — cured concrete that has been down for years is usually stronger than the mix ticket suggests. When a slab does not qualify, the fix is a poured footing pad at each column, typically a squared section cut out, excavated, reinforced, and poured to spec. It adds a few days and a modest cost, and it is far better than discovering a loose anchor under load. When we install a 2 post car lift, we torque every anchor to spec, verify column plumb with a level on two faces, cycle the lift through its full travel with load, and confirm both latch sets engage audibly at every stop.

Buying, installing, and keeping it running in Iowa

Our advice to the Great Lakes foreman was the same we give everyone: decide capacity from your actual heaviest vehicle plus a margin, decide overhead versus baseplate from your true ceiling clearance, decide symmetric versus asymmetric from how techs use the bay, and then pick a brand whose parts you can still get in 2040. That order keeps you from falling in love with a spec sheet before you have measured your building.
