A restoration shop owner near Marion called us last spring with a problem we hear constantly: he wanted a 2 post car lift dedicated to transmission and driveline work, but his building was fighting him on every dimension. Twelve-foot ceiling in one half of the shop, a low header over the door, a support column three feet off center in the exact spot he wanted the passenger-side post. He had been quoted twice by online sellers who never asked about any of that. We walked the bay with a tape measure, sketched two layouts on the back of a parts invoice, and had the right configuration figured out in under an hour. That is the part nobody sells you online, so let’s walk through it properly.

Start With the Money, Not the Model Number

Every decision tree we build with a customer starts at budget, because budget quietly determines about seventy percent of the configuration. In the entry tier you are looking at a 9,000 to 10,000 lb baseplate design — cables and hoses run through a floor plate between the columns, no overhead beam, and generally a shorter column. That tier is where the hobby and light-restoration crowd lands, and it works fine for a shop whose heaviest vehicle is a 5,500 lb pickup. The middle tier buys you a clearfloor overhead unit with better arm geometry, three-stage front arms, and a top beam that gets the plumbing out of your walking path. The upper tier is where asymmetric designs, 12,000 to 15,000 lb capacities, and taller columns live.

Where restoration shops get burned is treating the lift as a commodity and the freight, install, and anchoring as afterthoughts. A cheap unit with a thin column and a bargain power unit costs you more in downtime over five years than the difference in purchase price. We have replaced enough off-brand cylinders and one-off cables that we know the math. Our honest advice to that Marion shop was to skip the bottom tier entirely — not because we wanted a bigger sale, but because he was going to be under that thing four days a week with a transmission jack, and the equipment needed to be boring and reliable. Set your number, then let the number tell you which decision branch you are on.

Baseplate Versus Overhead When You Pull Transmissions

This is the fork in the road that matters most for driveline work. An overhead clearfloor design gives you a completely open floor between the columns, which is exactly what you want when you are rolling a transmission jack in from the side, sliding a driveshaft out, or catching four quarts of fluid in a drain pan you need to drag out fast. Nothing to trip over, nothing to catch a caster on. The tradeoff is the top beam, which eats roughly a foot of your rise and puts a hard limit on tall vehicles. If your ceiling is under about eleven and a half feet, an overhead unit starts squeezing your maximum lifting height into territory that annoys tall techs.

A baseplate design flips that. The plumbing runs low, so you get the full column rise available under a low ceiling, and there is no shutoff bar to whack the roof of a van. The cost is that floor plate — about two inches tall in most designs, and it lives exactly where your transmission jack wants to roll. Shops that do a lot of driveline work and choose baseplate usually end up approaching the vehicle from the front or rear rather than the side, or they build a small ramp over the plate. Neither is a dealbreaker; it just needs to be a decision instead of a surprise. We tell people to mock it up with chalk on the floor before the freight truck shows up.

Symmetric or Asymmetric Arms for Restoration Work

Restoration bays see an unusual mix of vehicles, and that mix should drive your arm choice. Symmetric arms are equal length front and rear, and they center the vehicle between the columns. That is ideal for trucks, vans, and long-wheelbase classics, and it keeps the load geometry simple. The downside is that the driver’s door opens straight into the column, which is miserable if you are climbing in and out to shift through gears while checking a linkage adjustment. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns and use unequal arms so the car sits back about a foot, putting the doors clear of the posts.

For a shop doing transmission service on mostly cars and light trucks, we lean asymmetric. You will be in and out of that driver’s seat more than you expect — checking shift feel, cycling a torque converter, verifying reverse engagement. On the other hand, if half your work is one-ton duallies and long-bed pickups, symmetric with three-stage front arms will handle the spread better and hold the vehicle more predictably. A few models split the difference with an expandable top beam that lets you configure a wide or narrow drive-through, which is worth asking about if your bay is tight on width. We will happily talk through the vehicle list you actually see rather than the one you hope to see.

Concrete, Anchors, and the Question Nobody Wants Asked

Anchoring is where we do our least popular work: telling people their slab may not be adequate. Most two-post manufacturers specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and some higher-capacity models want five or six. That Marion shop turned out to have a nominal four-inch pour from the mid-seventies with no way to know the mix. We cored two test spots, found closer to three and a half inches near the wall, and ended up cutting and pouring two footing pads. That added a weekend to the project and a modest cost, and it was the right call — a post that walks under load is not a repair you get to make twice.

If you do not know your slab thickness, find out before you order. A hammer drill and a piece of welding rod will tell you plenty in ten minutes. Watch out for slabs poured in sections with control joints running where you want anchors, radiant heat tubing, and post-tension cable in newer commercial buildings. Also check what is under the floor — we have run into buried drain lines exactly where a column footing needed to go. None of these are showstoppers, but every one of them is cheaper to solve on paper than after the crate is sitting in your bay. Our installers do this survey as part of a quote, and we would rather find the problem now.

Laying Out the Bay Around the Lift

A 2 post car lift is only as useful as the space around it, and transmission work is space-hungry. You need room to roll a jack in, a place to set a transmission down that is not the walkway, and clear reach to a bench without walking around the vehicle twice. Our rule of thumb is a minimum twelve-foot-wide bay for a car-focused setup, with fourteen feet being comfortable. Leave at least three feet behind the rear arms so you can get a driveshaft out without opening the overhead door in February. That last detail matters more in Iowa than most manufacturers realize.

Think about vertical space too. Overhead lighting wants to be beside the vehicle envelope, not directly above it, or you will smash a fixture the first month. Air drops, hose reels, and a dedicated 220V circuit for the power unit should all land on the same side of the bay so you are not running cords across the drive-in path. In that Marion shop we ended up rotating the whole layout ninety degrees from the original plan, putting the lift parallel to the long wall instead of nose-in to the door. The vehicle drove in at a slight angle, which he hated on the sketch and loved after a week, because it opened a straight path from the bay to his transmission bench.

Rise Height, Ceiling Math, and Tall Vehicles

Do the ceiling arithmetic before anything else if you are near the margin. For an overhead clearfloor design, add the maximum rise to the height of the tallest vehicle you will ever lift, then add clearance for the safety shutoff bar. A 12-foot ceiling with a common 72-inch rise and a 6-foot-tall vehicle is already tight. A 2 post car lift with a taller column and a 78-inch rise sounds great until you realize the top beam will not clear your header. Measure to the lowest obstruction in the bay, not the highest point of the roof — trusses, conduit, and unit heaters all count.

For transmission service specifically, you generally do not need maximum rise. You need the vehicle at a height where you can stand upright with a transmission on a jack in front of your chest, which for most techs is somewhere in the fifty to sixty inch range. That means a lower-rise baseplate unit under a twelve-foot ceiling often serves a driveline shop better than a tall overhead unit that never gets used at full extension. We have sold plenty of shorter-column lifts to people who came in convinced they needed the tallest thing we stock. Match the rise to the work you actually do and you will spend less and reach the pads faster on every single vehicle.

Installation, Break-In, and What We Do After the Sale

Once the configuration is settled the install is fairly quick — most two-post units go up in a day for a two-person crew with the right anchors, a rotary hammer, and a forklift or skid loader to stand the columns. What takes the time is doing it right: shimming the columns plumb, torquing anchors to spec, bleeding the cylinder completely, and running the lift through its full travel a dozen times to check that the equalization cables track and both carriages arrive at the same height. If a customer wants to self-install, we will ship it and stay on the phone during the process, and we do that regularly for folks four hours away who have a forklift and a helper.

The part people forget is maintenance. Grease the column slide areas, check cable tension quarterly, look at the safety latches every time you hear a new noise, and change the hydraulic fluid on schedule. A 2 post car lift that gets ten minutes of attention every few months will run twenty years. One that gets ignored will eventually drop a car, and that is the phone call nobody wants to make.
