The most common question we get from first-time home garage buyers looking at a 2 post car lift is not about capacity or brand — it’s about concrete. What he hadn’t done was figure out whether the slab under his garage would hold it. That’s the right order to work in, backwards. Why Concrete Comes First, Not Last
A two-post lift transfers everything it holds into two relatively small footprints. Each column base plate concentrates thousands of pounds of downward load and, more importantly, a substantial pullout force on the anchors as the load tries to tip the column inward. That pullout force is what your slab has to resist. It isn’t the weight of the car that cracks concrete — it’s the leverage of a tall column with a vehicle cantilevered off one side of it. A four-inch residential pour with no reinforcement and a weak subgrade can absolutely fail under that, and when it does, it fails as a cone of concrete pulling out around the anchor rather than a clean break you can see coming.
That’s why we ask about the slab before we ask about anything else. Most manufacturers spec a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb capacity unit, and many spec more. Some models want four and a quarter or five inches. Those numbers assume the concrete is cured, uncracked, and sitting on compacted fill — not a slab poured over soft dirt in 1968. If you’re buying a 2 post car lift for a Davenport garage built before the 1980s, assume nothing about the pour until you’ve verified it. Verification is cheap. Repair after a failure is not, and neither is the alternative.
How to Actually Measure Your Slab in Davenport
There are three ways to find out what you’ve got, and they range from free to a few hundred dollars. The cheapest is documentation: if the house or shop is newer, the builder or the city permit file may list the slab spec. Davenport-area builders often poured four inches with wire mesh in attached garages and thicker in detached shops. That’s a starting point, not proof. The second method is drilling a test hole. Pick a spot near where a column will land, drill straight down with a hammer drill and a long masonry bit, and measure where the bit stops biting concrete and starts pulling up dirt or gravel. Do this in two places, because slabs are rarely uniform — the perimeter is often thicker than the middle, and control joints can hide thin spots.
The third method is a rebar or mesh scanner, which a lot of concrete contractors and some rental yards have. Knowing whether you have rebar on a grid, welded wire mesh floating somewhere near the middle, or nothing at all changes the picture. Reinforcement doesn’t increase the anchor’s pullout strength directly, but it keeps a cracked slab acting like one piece instead of separate chunks. We’ve had customers find a beautiful six-inch pour and others find three and a half inches over sand. Both outcomes are useful. One means order the lift; the other means we talk about a pad.
Pouring a Pad When the Slab Isn’t Enough
If the existing floor doesn’t measure up, the fix is a pair of engineered footings or one continuous pad under the lift footprint. This is more common than people expect, and it is not a defeat — it’s just part of the project budget. A typical approach is to saw-cut and remove the existing concrete in two rectangles roughly four by four feet under each column, dig down to twelve inches or more, compact the base, tie in rebar, and pour 4,000 PSI mix. Some installers prefer one long pad spanning both columns so the geometry can shift slightly during setup. Either way, you let it cure a full 28 days before you set anchors. We’ve seen people anchor at seven days because they were impatient, and the anchors never developed proper holding strength.
Cost for pad work in eastern Iowa generally lands in the low four figures depending on access, disposal, and whether a concrete truck can back close to the door. That is real money, but compare it against the value of the vehicles you’re putting overhead. When a Davenport customer tells us he’s about to spend serious money on a 2 post car lift for alignment work on cars he’s restored himself, the pad conversation gets short. He pours the pad. The people who argue are almost always the ones who haven’t yet imagined a column moving under load.
Anchors, Torque, and the Part People Get Wrong
Every reputable two-post ships with wedge anchors sized and specified by the manufacturer, and the instructions give you a minimum embedment depth and a torque value. Both matter. Drill the hole to the specified depth using the specified bit diameter, vacuum or blow out the dust completely — dust is the single biggest cause of anchors that spin instead of setting — drive the anchor so the required number of threads remain exposed, and torque to spec with an actual torque wrench, not a breaker bar and a feeling. If an anchor won’t hold torque, you stop and address it. Sometimes that means moving the hole an inch and a half. Sometimes it means the concrete under that spot is bad.
Shims are the other place we see trouble. Columns need to be plumb, and floors are almost never level, so shim stacks under the base plates are normal. Manufacturers cap the total shim thickness, typically around half an inch, and require that shims be steel and full-bearing under the plate. Stacking four washers under one corner is not shimming. On a first-time installation of a 2 post car lift, plumb columns and correctly torqued anchors account for most of the difference between a unit that runs smoothly for twenty years and one that binds carriages and chews slider blocks. Ceiling Height and Layout for Alignment Work
Concrete is one constraint; the roof is the other. A clear-floor overhead model puts a beam between the columns, and that beam plus the lift’s rise plus the vehicle height has to fit under your ceiling. Overhead units generally want twelve feet minimum, and fourteen is comfortable. If you’re at eleven feet or under a low garage door track, a baseplate model with the crossover at the floor is the answer — you give up an unobstructed floor for the ability to raise a truck higher in a short building. We’ve spec’d plenty of baseplate units for eastern Iowa garages with a ten-foot-six ceiling where an overhead simply wasn’t possible.
For alignment work specifically, think about what happens around the lift, not just over it. You need room to walk the full length of the vehicle on both sides with gauges or heads in your hands, room to swing a door open at the drive-thru position, and enough width that the arms can reach forward and back without hitting your workbench. A bay that’s twenty feet wide by twenty-four deep is workable; wider is better. Also plan where the power unit goes and how the hose and cables route, because rerouting later means draining the system. Get the layout on paper — actual measurements, actual column locations, garage door swing marked — before the truck shows up. Choosing Capacity and Brand as a First-Time Buyer
For a home garage doing maintenance and alignment on cars and light trucks, a 10,000 lb capacity two-post covers nearly everything a homeowner will ever put on it. If you own a three-quarter-ton pickup or plan to, step up to 12,000 lb. Going bigger than you need isn’t free — the columns get taller and heavier, the footprint grows, and the price climbs — but going too small means the day you buy a diesel truck you own the wrong lift.
