A truck shop owner northwest of Storm Lake called us in February wanting a 2 post car lift for his own vehicles — not the semis, the pickups and the two collector cars he pulls out of storage every May. He had a number in his head from a website, and that number was about sixty percent of what the job actually costs by the time a freight truck rolls up to a gravel approach in Buena Vista County. That gap is the single most common surprise we deal with, and it has almost nothing to do with the lift itself. It’s freight, unloading, concrete, and the labor to set two columns plumb and anchored. Here’s the honest breakdown we gave him.

Why northwest Iowa freight costs more than the brochure suggests

Freight is priced on lanes, not miles, and northwest Iowa sits off the main lanes. A column set shipping out of a midwest distribution point to Des Moines or Cedar Rapids rides a route that carriers run daily. The same crate headed to Spencer, Sheldon, or Rock Rapids often gets rehandled at a terminal, waits for a truck going that direction, and picks up an accessorial charge or two along the way. We’ve seen the same lift model quote a few hundred dollars apart purely on destination ZIP within the same state.

The other cost driver is the shipment class. Two columns, a power unit, arms, and hardware typically ship as one or two pallets weighing between 1,600 and 2,400 pounds depending on capacity. That’s freight class territory, not parcel, and it means a 48-foot or 53-foot trailer showing up at your driveway. If your shop sits on a gravel lane with a soft spring approach, some carriers will refuse the delivery or bill a reconsignment fee to bring it back on a smaller straight truck. We ask about the approach before we quote, because a $200 question up front beats a $600 redelivery charge later. When we’re quoting a 2 post car lift for a rural address, we build the realistic freight number into the estimate rather than showing a low ball figure and surprising you at delivery.

Liftgate, forklift, or telehandler: the unloading decision

Carriers deliver curbside. They do not unload. That surprises people every single week. You have three practical options and each one changes the total.

Option one is a liftgate delivery, which adds a fee and gets the pallet to ground level. The catch is weight limits — most liftgates handle the power unit and arm pallet fine, but a pallet with two columns can exceed the rating, and a column pallet tipping off a gate is a genuinely bad day. Option two, and the one we prefer, is your own forklift or telehandler. Our truck shop owner had a rough-terrain forklift for handling tires and hay, which made unloading a ten-minute job. Half the leads we take from farm shops and truck shops already have iron on site, and that’s the cheapest path by a wide margin. Option three is a rental — a skid loader with pallet forks from an implement dealer or a rental yard, usually a half-day rate. Whatever you choose, decide before the truck is scheduled. A driver sitting in your yard while you make phone calls burns detention time, and that gets billed. What the concrete really needs to be

The number in most two-post installation manuals is four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum for a 10,000 lb clear-floor model, and more for higher capacities. Manufacturers also spec minimum distance from the anchor to any slab edge, control joint, or expansion joint — commonly six to twelve inches depending on the model. Those two requirements catch more installs than anything else.

We test with a rotary hammer and a depth gauge at each column footprint before anything gets anchored. In northwest Iowa we run into a lot of older farm shops poured in the 1970s and 80s where the slab is nominally four inches but thins to two and a half over a soft spot. We also see slabs that measure fine but sit on poor base with visible heave cracking. Neither situation means you can’t own a lift — it means you cut and pour two footing pads, typically four by four feet and eight to twelve inches deep with rebar, and let them cure before install. Budget in the low four figures for a concrete contractor to do both pads in one trip. The shop owner near Storm Lake had a good pour with fiber in it and measured five and a half inches across both footprints, so he skipped that line item entirely. That’s the kind of thing we’d rather know on day one than day of install.

Overhead versus baseplate when you store vehicles

For a seasonal storage use case, ceiling height drives the decision more than anything. A clear-floor overhead-beam two-post needs roughly twelve feet of clearance to lift a tall pickup to full height without the truck’s roof kissing the beam. If your shop is at eleven feet or you have a bar joist running the wrong direction, a floorplate model with the hydraulic lines and equalization cables routed through a base channel is the right call. You give up a clean floor and gain about two and a half feet of usable lifting height.

We had a lead out of North Dakota with a hard 139-inch ceiling limit who reached the same conclusion, and it’s the correct one. The tradeoff people underestimate is the floor channel itself — you will roll a floor jack over it, drag a transmission jack across it, and occasionally stub a boot on it. It’s a real annoyance, not a dealbreaker. For seasonal storage specifically, the other consideration is duty cycle. A 2 post car lift that goes up in October and comes down in April sees almost no cycles, which means the wear items last essentially forever but the hydraulic seals and cables still need annual inspection. Low use is not no maintenance. We tell storage customers to cycle the lift a few times a month even when nothing is on it, just to keep seals wetted and the cables moving.

Installation labor: what two columns actually take

A straightforward install on good concrete with clear access runs four to six hours for a two-person crew. That covers layout, drilling and setting anchors to spec torque, plumbing the columns with shims, running hydraulic lines, wiring the power unit to your disconnect, bleeding the system, setting equalization cable tension, testing all safety locks, and cycling the lift under load. Then we walk you through daily and monthly checks before we leave.

What adds hours: tight buildings where a column has to be walked in at an angle, existing equipment that has to be moved, electrical that isn’t run yet, and slabs that fight the drill. Rebar hits are common and each one costs fifteen minutes of repositioning and re-drilling. If your shop needs a 208/230V single-phase circuit run to the column location, that’s an electrician’s line item separate from our labor — usually a few hundred to somewhat over a thousand depending on panel distance and whether a new breaker and disconnect are needed. Some customers do their own install, and for a mechanically confident owner with a helper and a rotary hammer, that’s reasonable. But get the anchor torque right and get the columns plumb. A column out of plumb by a quarter inch over eight feet puts uneven load on the carriage and wears slide blocks fast. The full cost stack for a 2 post car lift, tier by tier

Here’s how we lay it out for customers so nothing hides. Tier one is the equipment. An entry-level 10,000 lb symmetric two-post from a value brand lands in the low-to-mid four figures. A BendPak or Atlas clear-floor model with better arm hardware and a longer warranty sits in the mid four figures. A Rotary or Challenger commercial column set — the ones we put in dealerships and body shops that cycle forty times a day — runs from the upper four figures into five, and for a truck shop wanting 12,000 or 15,000 lb capacity, plan on the higher end.

Tier two is freight, and for northwest Iowa addresses we usually see a few hundred dollars, more with liftgate service. Tier three is unloading — free if you have a forklift, a half-day rental rate if you don’t. Tier four is concrete, zero if your slab passes and low four figures if you need two footing pads. Tier five is electrical, a few hundred to over a thousand. Tier six is our install labor. Add those up and a realistic all-in number for a quality 10,000 lb 2 post car lift installed in a rural Iowa shop generally lands well above the sticker price on the crate — often thirty to fifty percent above. Where the money is worth spending and where it isn’t

If you’re storing collector vehicles seasonally and lifting a couple of pickups for oil changes, you do not need a dealership-duty column set. What you do need is honest steel, a power unit that will still start after sitting through an Iowa winter, arms that reach your actual lift points, and a manufacturer who will still sell you a cable and a cylinder in eight years. That last point is where the cheapest options fail. We field calls constantly from owners of off-brand equipment where the importer is gone and nobody stocks a replacement carriage or an equalization cable in the right length.

Spend the money on capacity headroom and on parts availability. Save it on features you won’t use — drive-thru top beam extensions, exotic pad kits, air-line accessories you’ll never plumb. And do not save money by skipping the concrete work, because an anchor pulling out of a thin slab under load is the failure mode that puts a car on the floor. We had a Missouri customer with roughly five inches of questionable concrete who said outright he needed a setup that wouldn’t drop a car. That’s the right instinct. A 2 post car lift is only as safe as the slab it’s bolted to and the annual inspection it gets.
