That call is the most common cylinder story we hear, and it almost always ends the same way: worn piston seals, a scored rod, or a bypassing packing gland. What Sag Actually Means on a 2 Post Car Lift
Drift, sag, settle — shops use all three words for the same symptom, and the diagnosis path is identical. A lift holds a vehicle in the air two ways: hydraulic pressure while it is rising, and mechanical locks once you lower it onto a latch. If a raised vehicle creeps down, fluid is escaping from the pressurized side of the cylinder to somewhere it should not be. That is either an internal path — past the piston seal, inside the barrel — or an external path at the rod gland, the hose fitting, or the power unit itself. On the Waterloo unit, the floor was bone dry and the power unit reservoir was full, which pointed us inside the cylinder immediately.
The other half of the diagnosis is understanding what sag is not. It is not a safety failure in itself, because the mechanical latches are what carry the load when the lift is parked on a lock. But it becomes dangerous fast when technicians get in the habit of working under a vehicle that is floating on pressure between two lock positions. On the fleet shop’s equipment, drivers had been raising the squad cars to a comfortable oil-drain height rather than a locked height, then wondering why the car walked down toward them. Step one for every crew we train is the same: raise past your working height, then lower onto the nearest latch and confirm both sides audibly engaged before anyone puts a hand under the vehicle.
Reading the Serial Tag Before You Order Anything
Cylinders are not generic. Bore diameter, rod diameter, stroke length, port size, and mounting style all vary between models — and often between production years of the same model. We have watched shops order a seal kit off a photo, tear the cylinder down on a Friday afternoon, and discover the piston seal is a half inch off. Then the bay sits open all weekend. The fix is boring but reliable: find the data tag on the column, photograph it, and send it to us before you touch a wrench. Serial number, model number, and capacity are all we need to pull the right kit.
If the tag is gone — painted over, sandblasted, or scraped off during a previous relocation — we go to measurements. We ask for the collapsed and extended length of the cylinder, the rod diameter at a clean spot, the barrel outside diameter, and clear photos of both ends including the port and any clevis or trunnion mount. That is usually enough to identify a Rotary or Challenger cylinder from our records. The Waterloo shop’s unit turned out to be a mid-2000s Rotary two-post, and the correct seal kit had been superseded twice since the original build, which is precisely the kind of thing a parts catalog photo will never tell you. Ordering by measurement beats ordering by guess every single time on a 2 post car lift.
Rebuild Kit or Full Cylinder Replacement?
Once we know what we are dealing with, the decision is economic and it hinges on rod and bore condition. A seal kit is cheap relative to a complete cylinder, and if the chrome on the rod is unmarked and the bore is smooth, a rebuild is the obvious call. Pull the cylinder, press out the gland, replace the piston seal, wear ring, rod seal, wiper, and O-rings, hone lightly if needed, reassemble with clean fluid, bleed, and cycle it. A competent tech can do that in an afternoon and the repair often outlasts the rest of the equipment.
The rebuild stops making sense when the rod is pitted or scored. Chrome damage will chew a brand-new rod seal in weeks, so you end up doing the job twice. Same goes for a barrel with a scored bore or a weld-on mount that has cracked. In those cases we quote a complete cylinder assembly, which for most 10,000 lb two-post models lands in the low-to-mid hundreds range depending on brand and stroke, versus a fraction of that for a seal kit. For a municipal fleet running fifty-plus vehicles through one bay, we usually recommend replacement over rebuild simply because the downtime math favors a part that arrives ready to install. Shops with more time than budget go the other direction, and that is a legitimate choice too.
Hoses, Fittings, and the Leak You Blame on the Cylinder
Before anybody drops a cylinder, we check the plumbing, because we have been called out for cylinder failures that turned out to be a two-dollar O-ring. Hydraulic hose on a lift lives a hard life: it flexes every cycle, it collects brake dust and road salt, and on a baseplate-style unit it runs along the floor where a dropped transmission jack can crush it. Look for weeping at the crimps, bulges under the cover, and cracked outer jacket near the bends. A hose that seeps under load can mimic cylinder bypass almost perfectly.
Fittings deserve the same attention. JIC flare seats get nicked, pipe threads get over-tightened until the fitting cracks, and somebody along the way always wraps a hydraulic fitting in Teflon tape and calls it done. We replace hoses in pairs on a two-column unit so both sides have the same age and flex characteristics, and we route them so they cannot chafe on the carriage or column edge. On the Waterloo job the hoses were original, roughly eighteen years old, so we replaced both while the cylinder was out. Doing it separately would have meant bleeding the system twice and pulling the shop’s oil change bay offline a second time — an easy call for a fleet operation that cannot afford a second shutdown.
Fluid, Bleeding, and Power Unit Health
A cylinder rebuild is only as good as the fluid you put back in. We see three recurring problems: the wrong fluid, not enough fluid, and contaminated fluid. Most two-post lifts run AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, and some manufacturers approve ATF as an alternative — but check your manual rather than assuming, because mixing types can swell seals. Reservoir level matters more than people think; on a full-rise unit the cylinder swallows a surprising volume at full extension, and a low reservoir will cavitate the pump and aerate the oil, which shows up as a jerky, spongy rise that owners mistake for a bad cylinder.
Bleeding is the step most often skipped. Air trapped in the cylinder compresses under load, so the vehicle appears to settle even though every seal is brand new. Our routine is to cycle the lift to full height with no load on it, hold it there, then lower fully, three or four times, cracking the bleeder at the top of the cylinder on the final pass. Then we check for level equalization between columns. While we are in there we also inspect the power unit: motor mount bolts, breather cap, filter screen in the reservoir, and the lowering valve, which collects debris and is a legitimate cause of slow drift on an older 2 post car lift. The Safety Walkthrough We Run Before Returning a Bay to Service
Rebuilding the hydraulics does not put the bay back in service. We run a full functional inspection first, and for a municipal fleet with union techs and a safety officer, we document it. Locks come first: every latch position on both columns, engaged and released, with the release cable or air line adjusted so both sides drop together. Then arm restraints — the gear-and-pin mechanism that keeps a swing arm from rotating out from under a vehicle. Those wear, and a worn restraint on an oil change bay where cars go up and down twenty times a day is a real hazard.
Next: anchor bolts torqued to spec and concrete inspected around each base plate for cracking or spalling; equalization cables or chains adjusted so the carriages track within tolerance; overhead shutoff bar functioning on a clearfloor design; pads present, correct height, and not crushed flat. Finally we load-test with a real vehicle, raise to full height, park on the locks, and watch it for fifteen minutes. Zero movement is the only passing grade.
