Why fleet tire work belongs on a two-post
A municipal fleet spends more time on tires, brakes, and wheel bearings than on any other single service — city cars, meter reader hatchbacks, community-services minivans, patrol Explorers. Every one of those jobs needs the wheels hanging free. That is what a 2 post car lift does that a four-post ramp lift does not: it grabs the vehicle at four frame pinch points and leaves the wheels in the air. A rolling jack on a four-post can do it too, but the jack takes up floor space, moves under load, and adds a second point of failure. For a bay that runs tire rotations every morning, the two-post is faster on the clock and cleaner in the workflow.
The other reason we push fleet buyers toward two-post is bay layout. A fleet shop forklift is usually rated at 4,000 to 6,000 pounds with 42-inch tines, which is more than enough for a lift pallet on paper. In practice the pallet is long, the columns are lag-strapped, and the center of gravity is not in the middle. We ask your operator to widen the tines to 36 inches, approach the pallet dead square, and lift only high enough to clear the truck deck — six inches, no more. Then back out slow, pivot in the drive aisle, and stage the pallet inside the receiving door on level concrete before you cut a single strap.
Staging area matters because you will lay the columns on their sides to inspect anchor plates, uncoil the hydraulic hose, and route the equalization cables. That takes roughly twelve by twenty feet of clear floor. Plan for it. We have watched fleet crews try to stage against a stacked pallet of oil filters and end up dragging a column over a floor drain. Every scratch on the powder coat is a rust starter, and every twisted cable is a headache during setup. If your only clear floor is the bay itself, park the fleet outside for the day and use the bay. It is a one-time inconvenience that protects a fifteen-year asset.
Receiving inspection: the one nobody does
Before we tell an installer to touch a wrench, we open every carton and photograph every welded seam. On a 2 post car lift the failure points ship-wise are the column top caps, the equalization sheaves, the arm pins, and the powerhead bracket. A shipping strap under tension can dimple a column at the top cap and that dimple will interfere with the carriage roller when you cycle the lift under load six months later. Catch it now and the manufacturer will send a warranty replacement inside two weeks. Miss it and it becomes a service call charged to the department.
We give every fleet customer a one-page inspection sheet with the same seventeen items we check ourselves: shipping locks removed, powerhead reservoir sealed, cylinder rod uncorroded, hoses factory-crimped with no chafing, arm pins seated with retainer clips, safety ladder teeth undamaged, and so on. It takes about twenty minutes. That twenty minutes has saved city shops from anchoring a defective column into the slab and then having to un-anchor it. Once the sheet is signed and every box is checked, then we schedule the install crew — not before. That order-of-operations discipline is the entire difference between a smooth deployment and a bay that sits empty for a week.
Anchors, torque, and the slab conversation
Cedar Falls city shops are almost always sitting on a four-to-six-inch slab poured over compacted base. That is inside spec for most 10,000-pound two-post lifts, but the concrete needs to be a minimum of 3,000 PSI and cured for at least twenty-eight days after any patch work. We core-test a sample where possible or ask facilities for the pour records before we drill. Anchor selection is not optional — the manufacturer specifies a wedge anchor size, embedment depth, and torque value that has to be hit exactly for the ALI certification to remain valid.
The torque wrench matters. A calibrated click-type wrench, checked against a known standard within the last twelve months, is the only thing that gives you confidence the anchors are seated correctly. Over-torque cracks the concrete cone around the anchor and reduces pull-out strength; under-torque leaves the column with lateral play that shows up as a wobble at full lift height. We bring our own wrench to every install, run through the full anchor pattern twice, and document each column with a photo of the wrench reading. That photo goes in the fleet’s maintenance binder alongside the ALI plate. When your risk manager asks how you know the lift is safe, that binder is your answer.
First-day training for the tire techs
On the morning of the first shift, we walk the fleet techs through the lift the same way we would train a new hire in our own shop. That includes lift point identification on the four most common vehicles in the fleet, arm restraint engagement checks, safety cam audible confirmation at each locking position, and the descent procedure — especially the double-tap on the release valve that lets the safeties disengage before the cylinder retracts. It is not complicated, but it is not intuitive, and every tech deserves a real orientation before running the 2 post car lift with a city vehicle on it.
We also show techs how to spot the wear items that predict a service call before it happens: cable fray at the sheave, arm pin slop, hydraulic weep at the cylinder base, and dust caking on the safety ladder.
