The Dimensions That Actually Decide the Purchase
Before anyone talks capacity, we talk about three measurements: ceiling height, bay width, and the distance from the intended column location to the nearest obstruction. On a clearfloor overhead model, overall height typically lands between 145 and 155 inches. Baseplate models cut that down dramatically — most sit in the 110 to 125 inch range because the crossbar runs along the floor instead of over the top. That ND customer we quoted last fall had a hard ceiling limit of 139 inches and no way to raise it, which took every overhead unit off the table in about ninety seconds. Baseplate was the only honest answer.
Bay width matters just as much. Column-to-column inside clearance on a standard symmetric unit runs roughly 100 to 112 inches, with total footprint closer to 132 inches once you account for the base plates and anchor pattern. Asymmetric configurations shift the columns and rotate the vehicle for better door swing, which is the layout most dealership express lanes want. Add at least 24 inches of walk space per side and you’ll want a bay no narrower than 12 feet. We’ve fit a 2 post car lift into an 11-foot bay before, but nobody enjoyed working in it, and the tech will remind you about it every single day for the next eight years.
Concrete: The Spec That Voids Everything Else
Every manufacturer publishes the same basic floor requirement, and every manufacturer means it. You need a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and most reputable builders want more — Rotary and Challenger both spell out thicker minimums on their higher-capacity columns. That Missouri customer with roughly five inches of slab, maybe less in spots, was right to be nervous. Five inches sounds like plenty until you core it and find three and a half with a gravel void underneath.
We core test before we anchor. It takes twenty minutes and it’s the cheapest insurance in the entire installation. If the slab fails, the fix is a cut-and-pour pad — typically a 4×4 or 5×5 foot section per column, poured at 4,000 PSI and cured a minimum of 28 days before anchors go in. That adds a week or two to the timeline and a meaningful chunk to the budget, but it’s the difference between equipment that lasts twenty years and equipment that pulls anchors on a Tuesday morning with a customer’s Suburban twelve feet in the air. When we’re asked about resale value later, the first thing a buyer’s inspector looks at is anchor condition and slab cracking around the base plates. Bad concrete destroys resale before the lift is a year old.
Capacity Math for a Fluid-Service Bay
The Ankeny service manager assumed he needed 14,000 pounds because the shop next door had one. We ran the actual numbers. His heaviest regular vehicle was a three-quarter ton crew cab at roughly 7,400 pounds curb, and his express lane saw mostly sedans, crossovers, and half-tons. A 10,000 lb unit covers that with margin. A 12,000 lb unit covers it with generous margin and handles the occasional fleet van.
Where the math gets interesting is arm reach and pad height, not capacity. Oil changes and fluid service mean you’re going up and down all day, often only three or four feet, and the tech is working under the vehicle with a drain pan and a filter wrench. Drop-end arms with telescoping screw pads matter more here than another 4,000 pounds of rated capacity you’ll never use. Low-profile pad height in the 3.5 to 4 inch range lets you get under lowered trade-ins without stacking blocks. We’ve watched shops buy a 15,000 lb unit for a bay that runs Camrys and then discover the arms won’t reach the pinch weld points on anything smaller than a Tahoe. Buy the capacity you use, and spend the difference on arm geometry and a good power unit.
What a 2 Post Car Lift Does to Your Property and Trade-In Value
Here’s the part most sellers get wrong. A professionally installed two-post column with documented ALI certification, current annual inspection tags, and a clean anchor record is an asset. The same model installed by whoever was available, with no paperwork and rust bleeding from the base plates, is a liability the buyer will discount to near zero or ask you to remove at your own cost.

Uncertified imports with no records are worth scrap plus whatever the columns weigh. Overhead vs. Baseplate for a High-Volume Lane
Dealership express lanes almost always want clearfloor overhead. Nothing crosses the floor, so drain pans, creepers, and fluid carts roll straight through without a trip hazard, and the tech isn’t stepping over a crossbar forty times a shift. The overhead shutoff bar also protects roof racks and antennas, which in a lane full of unfamiliar trade-ins is genuinely useful.
Baseplate makes sense in exactly one scenario: you can’t get the ceiling. Low-clearance shops, converted pole barns, and buildings with sprinkler mains or radiant tube heat running the length of the bay all push you toward the floor-crossbar design. The tradeoff is real and worth naming honestly. That floor bar collects dirt and oil, it’s a cable and hose run you’ll be stepping over, and on a fluid-service bay running dozens of cars a day it becomes a nuisance. It’s not a bad lift — it’s a compromise for a specific building. We’d rather sell someone a baseplate that fits their actual ceiling than an overhead they have to cut a hole for. We’ve also seen shops raise a section of roof to gain the twelve inches they needed, and in a couple of cases that was cheaper over ten years than living with a compromised layout. Failure Modes We See on Fluid-Service Lifts
A shop owner called us recently about a Challenger two-post where the motor ran, fluid was full, and nothing lifted. No leaks anywhere. That symptom set points almost every time to a stuck or failed check valve in the power unit, or a lowering valve that isn’t seating — the pump moves fluid and it goes right back to tank. It’s usually a same-day fix and it’s not the disaster it feels like at 7 a.m. with a full lane.
The failures that actually shorten a lift’s life on a high-cycle bay are different: cable and chain stretch from constant partial-height cycling, arm restraint gear wear from techs swinging arms under load, and carriage slider block wear that shows up as a column that hesitates or creaks. Fluid service is brutal on equipment specifically because of cycle count — a 2 post car lift in an express lane might see 3,000 lifts a year where a general repair bay sees 800. Budget for equalization cable adjustment annually and slider block replacement somewhere around year six to eight. Getting It Specified Right the First Time
When we quote a bay, we want six things: interior ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, bay width and depth, concrete thickness and age, heaviest vehicle by curb weight, power available at the bay, and whether the customer has a forklift for unloading. That last one changes freight cost meaningfully — a customer with a forklift and a loading area saves the liftgate and inside-delivery charges, and several of our best customers unload their own equipment.
Installed pricing for a quality commercial-grade unit generally runs in the mid four figures for the equipment with installation adding a further tier depending on anchor conditions, electrical work, and whether concrete needs to be cut. A homeowner shopping a hobby setup can land considerably lower; a dealership specifying a certified 12,000 lb symmetric with a three-phase power unit will land higher.
