Two post lift hydraulic troubleshooting is the single most common phone call we take at our Ames, Iowa shop, and it almost always starts the same way: a tech pushes the up button, the motor runs, and the carriages either crawl up like they’re tired or refuse to move at all with a truck on the arms. We’ve been installing and servicing lifts across Iowa long enough to know that the fix is rarely the expensive part everyone assumes it is. Most of the time the hydraulic system is telling you exactly what’s wrong — you just need a repeatable order of operations to read it. This walkthrough is the same sequence our field techs follow when they roll up to a bay with a lift that won’t cooperate.

Start With Fluid Level, Not the Parts Catalog

Before anyone opens a power unit or orders a seal kit, we check fluid. It sounds insultingly basic, and it solves a genuinely large share of the calls we get. A two post lift reservoir is small — often two to three gallons — and it only holds enough oil to fill the cylinders at full rise. If the level is low, the pump starts pulling air on the last few feet of travel, which shows up as a lift that goes up fine to chest height and then slows to a crawl or stops entirely. Techs interpret that as a dying pump when it’s really a starved one.

Check the level with the carriages all the way down, never mid-rise, or you’ll overfill and blow oil out the breather the next time the lift comes back to the floor. Use the fluid the manufacturer specifies — most modern units want AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, and a few older Rotary and Challenger power units were filled with ATF from the factory. Mixing types isn’t catastrophic but it changes viscosity and can make cold-morning performance in an unheated Iowa garage noticeably worse. While the cap is off, look at the oil itself. Milky oil means water intrusion, usually from a bad breather or a shop that pressure-washes near the power unit. Dark, varnished oil with a burnt smell means the pump has been running hot and you’re likely chasing a bypass problem, not a leak. Both of those observations narrow your two post lift hydraulic troubleshooting path before you’ve touched a wrench.

Separate Electrical Symptoms From Hydraulic Ones

Half the lifts we’re called out for aren’t hydraulic problems at all. The motor humming without turning, tripping a breaker, or doing nothing when the button is pressed are electrical faults, and treating them as hydraulic failures wastes a lot of shop time. Put a meter on the incoming power at the power unit while someone holds the up button. A 220V single-phase unit should show full line voltage under load; if it sags badly, you’ve got an undersized circuit, a long extension of wire, or a loose lug in the disconnect. We’ve found more failed contactors and corroded push-button switches in Iowa shops than we have failed pumps.

Listen carefully too. A motor that groans and then trips thermal overload is usually seeing either a locked rotor, a wrong-voltage wiring configuration, or a pump that’s hydraulically locked because a valve isn’t opening. A motor that spins freely at normal pitch while nothing rises is almost certainly a hydraulic issue — coupler, pump intake, or bypass. That distinction is the fork in the road for everything that follows. The Slow-Rise Test: Loaded Versus Empty

Here’s a test we run on nearly every service call because it splits the problem in half in about ninety seconds. Run the lift empty, from full down to full up, and time it. Then run it with a mid-weight vehicle on the arms and time it again. A healthy two post lift rises in roughly forty-five to sixty seconds and the loaded time shouldn’t be dramatically longer than the empty time.

If the lift is slow both empty and loaded, you’re looking at a flow restriction: low fluid, a clogged intake filter or screen in the reservoir, a kinked or collapsing hose, or a failing pump that simply isn’t moving volume. If it’s normal speed empty but crawls or stalls under load, that’s a pressure problem — the pump is moving oil but can’t build enough pressure to hold the weight. That points to internal pump wear, a relief valve set too low or contaminated open, or worn cylinder seals letting oil past the piston instead of pushing it. This one distinction is the backbone of good two post lift hydraulic troubleshooting, and it’s why we always ask customers to test both ways before we quote parts. We’ve saved shops the cost of a full power unit more than once by finding a relief valve holding a piece of debris.

Chasing Down Leaks Before You Blame the Pump

Oil on the floor is obvious. Oil that never reaches the floor is the one that fools people. A cylinder that leaks internally past the piston seal loses no fluid externally at all — the oil just circulates uselessly inside the barrel, and the lift drifts down or won’t reach full height. Externally, we start at the fittings, because compression and JIC fittings under a lift take a beating from arms swinging into them and from techs stepping on hose runs.

Clean everything with brake cleaner, run the lift to full height, hold it, and then walk the whole circuit with a flashlight and a white shop rag. Wipe each fitting, each hose end, the cylinder rod seals at the top of each carriage, and the power unit’s own fittings and pump gasket. Fresh wet oil on a clean surface tells you where it’s coming from; old grime tells you nothing. Rod seal weeping on a cylinder is repairable with a seal kit if the rod isn’t scored, but a pitted or rusted rod will chew a new seal in weeks. Two Post Lift Hydraulic Troubleshooting at the Power Unit

When fluid, electrical and leaks all check out, the power unit is next. Pull the motor and pump assembly out of the reservoir if you can do it cleanly — most units come out as one piece with four bolts — and inspect the intake screen. In older shops we routinely find that screen packed with a gray sludge of oil, water and metal fines. A blocked screen mimics a dead pump perfectly.

Check the coupler between the motor shaft and the pump shaft. Rubber spider couplers crack and shear, and when they go the motor sounds completely normal while the pump does nothing. Then look at the relief valve. On most gear pumps it’s an adjustable cartridge with a locknut; debris under the poppet lets pressure dump straight back to tank. Cleaning it is free, and it works often enough that we always try it before condemning the unit. If pressure still won’t build, a gauge tee’d into the pressure line under load will tell you whether the pump is producing rated pressure. Anything meaningfully below spec means internal wear. Drift, Settling, and Why It Isn’t Always Hydraulic

A lift that settles overnight scares people, and it should get attention — but the cause is often misdiagnosed. Real hydraulic drift comes from three places: a leaking cylinder piston seal, a lowering valve that isn’t seating, or a check valve in the power unit passing oil back to tank. A leaking cylinder will usually drop one side faster than the other, which shows up as the vehicle sitting visibly cocked in the morning. Even drop on both sides usually points back to the power unit’s valving.

What’s not hydraulic: thermal contraction. Oil in a warm shop that cools overnight shrinks, and a half inch of settle by morning on a tall lift is normal physics, not a failure. Also remember that a properly used two post lift is supposed to be resting on its mechanical locks, not on hydraulic pressure. If your locks are engaged, drift is a nuisance rather than a danger. If someone in the shop is leaving vehicles hanging on oil pressure alone because the locks are seized or the release cables are misadjusted, that’s the safety problem to fix first — and it’s a lock issue, not two post lift hydraulic troubleshooting. We fix a lot of seized latches on Iowa lifts that have gone a decade without lubrication.

When to Repair, When to Replace, and When to Call Us

Once you’ve narrowed the fault, the economics are usually clear. Hoses, fittings, couplers, filters, relief cartridges and seal kits are inexpensive and worth doing immediately — those repairs typically land in the low hundreds including labor. A single replacement cylinder is a mid-range expense but almost always cheaper than a new lift and worth it on a structurally sound column. A complete power unit replacement is the biggest hydraulic line item, and on a lift under fifteen years old it’s still a fraction of what a new installed two-post costs.

Where we tell customers to stop repairing: when the columns show cracked welds or elongated bolt holes at the base, when the carriage slide blocks are worn to the point of visible rock, or when the lift has no legible capacity or serial plate and no ALI certification history. At that point you’re putting good hydraulic parts into a frame we wouldn’t stand under.
