Ask a technician what holds a car in the air and most will say the cylinder or the hydraulic system. That is only true while the lift is moving. Once you park a vehicle at working height, the hydraulics are supposed to be relieved and the entire load should be resting on mechanical locks engaged in the lock ladder inside each column. We see this constantly on lifts where the equalization cables have stretched and the carriages are no longer level, because a tilted carriage presents the latch to the ladder at a bad angle. With the lift lowered and power locked out, pull the column covers and get a light on the mechanism. We are inspecting four things on each side. First, the latch dog itself: the engaging face should be square and full-thickness, not rounded, chipped, or peened over. A rounded dog is the classic sign of a lift that has been dropped onto the locks under load repeatedly, and it will eventually skate past a slot instead of catching. Cleaning, Lubrication, And What Not To Use
Most sticky locks come back to life with cleaning rather than parts. We degrease the pivot and the ladder faces, wire-brush surface rust, blow out packed debris, and then lubricate the pivot with a light penetrating oil or dry film lubricant. What we avoid is heavy grease.
