A solid 4 post install checklist is the difference between a lift that goes in clean on install day and one that turns into a half-day of shimming, re-drilling, and phone calls to us asking why the runways won’t square up. We’ve installed four post lifts in garages from Council Bluffs to Dubuque, and almost every callback we get traces back to a step that got skipped before the crew ever unloaded the columns. This guide walks through the checklist we actually use in the field, not a generic pamphlet version, so you know what to confirm before your lift shows up on a truck.

Start Every 4 Post Install Checklist With the Slab

Before anything else on the 4 post install checklist, we look at the concrete. Four post lifts spread load across a wider footprint than a two post, which is good news for older slabs, but that doesn’t mean any pad qualifies. We’re looking for a minimum thickness around 4 inches of unreinforced concrete rated at 3,000 PSI or better, poured within the last several years, with no visible cracking running through the anchor zones. If the garage was built before the mid-1990s or the slab has patch work in it, we core sample it before we commit to a spot.

Runway placement also depends on what’s underneath. A floor drain, a radiant heat line, or an expansion joint running through where a column needs to sit will force us to shift the whole lift plan, sometimes by a foot or more. That’s a conversation we’d rather have during the quote than the morning of install, because moving a four post lift’s footprint after the truck arrives eats hours out of the schedule. We always ask for a few photos of the intended bay and rough measurements before we finalize anything, and that single step catches more slab problems than any other item on the checklist.

Confirm Overhead and Side Clearance

The next stop on the 4 post install checklist is clearance, and it’s the item homeowners underestimate most often. A typical four post lift needs 12 to 14 feet of overhead room once a vehicle is raised to full height, and that’s measured to the lowest point in the ceiling, not the average height. Garage door tracks, HVAC ductwork, and sprinkler heads all count. We’ve had installs get delayed because a customer measured to the drywall and forgot the door opener rail hanging six inches lower.

Side-to-side clearance matters just as much. You need enough width to walk around the vehicle once it’s parked on the runways, plus room for the safety locks to engage without your knuckles hitting a wall stud. If you’re planning to add a rolling jack or caster kit on top of the runways later, account for that extra height now rather than discovering it after the lift is anchored. We build clearance numbers into every quote so there are no surprises, but it’s worth double-checking your own tape measure before the truck leaves our lot.

Check Your Electrical and Power Unit Placement

Most four post lifts run on a standard single-phase circuit, but the power unit still needs a dedicated location that isn’t an afterthought. On our 4 post install checklist we confirm where the power unit will mount, how far the hydraulic hoses need to run to reach it, and whether the existing outlet is within reach or a licensed electrician needs to add one. Running hose too far from the power unit slows cycle time and adds a failure point, so we plan the shortest reasonable path during the walkthrough.

We also check breaker sizing against the lift’s actual draw rather than assuming the existing garage circuit is adequate. A shared circuit with a compressor or a space heater is a common cause of nuisance trips once the lift is under regular use. If your garage is older, this is a good time to have an electrician look at the panel anyway, since most lift installs coincide with adding better lighting and maybe a compressor line at the same time.

Verify Runway Length and Width for Your Vehicles

Not every four post lift fits every vehicle, and this is where the 4 post install checklist saves people from an expensive mismatch. Longer trucks and extended-cab pickups need longer runways than a standard sedan package, and dually trucks need wider runway spacing or a dedicated wide-body model. We ask customers to list the largest and widest vehicle they expect to service on the lift, not just what they currently own, because swapping runways after install is far more work than choosing correctly up front.

We also confirm wheelbase compatibility for drive-on ramps versus rolling bridge jacks, since some shops want the ability to pull a wheel off mid-lift for brake work. That decision changes which accessories go on the order and how the runways get configured during install, so it belongs on the checklist before delivery, not as a change order afterward.

Plan the Anchor Pattern Before Delivery Day

Anchoring is where a rushed install shows up fastest. Every four post lift ships with a specific anchor bolt pattern and embedment depth, and those numbers aren’t suggestions. Our 4 post install checklist includes marking out the full column footprint on the slab with chalk before the lift even comes off the truck, so we can catch conflicts with rebar, drain lines, or a control joint before drilling starts. Redoing an anchor hole in bad concrete costs time we’d rather spend leveling and squaring the runways.

We also torque every anchor to spec and re-check torque after the lift has been cycled a few times under load, since new concrete and new anchors both settle slightly in the first days of use. Skipping that recheck is one of the most common reasons a four post lift develops a wobble a few weeks after a rushed install.

Square the Runways and Test Under Load

Getting the runways level relative to each other and square along their length is its own step on the checklist, separate from anchoring. We use a laser level across all four columns and check diagonal measurements corner to corner before we call the lift ready. A runway that’s off by even a small amount at the base can translate into a noticeably crooked platform once a vehicle’s weight is on it.

Once everything reads level and square, we run the lift empty through a full cycle, then load it with a vehicle and cycle it again while watching the locks engage evenly on all four columns. This step catches uneven hydraulic flow or a binding column before you ever trust the lift with a car parked on it unattended, which is really the whole point of running a checklist in the first place.

Do a Final Safety Walkthrough Before Handoff

The last section of our 4 post install checklist is the walkthrough we do with the customer standing right there. We point out the safety lock release, explain the load rating printed on the column decal, and confirm everyone in the shop knows how to lower the lift in an emergency. We also review maintenance basics like hydraulic fluid checks and cable inspection intervals so the lift keeps performing the way it did on day one.
